Sir Keir Starmer assembles cabinet for first time
Sir Keir Starmer has told ministers there is a “huge amount of work to do” as he chaired the first meeting of the new Cabinet on his first full day in Downing Street.
The Prime Minister told his top team it had been “the honour and the privilege of my life” to be invited by the King to form the Government after sweeping to a historic victory at the polls.
Sir Keir and ministers looked in high spirits as he gave brief opening remarks at the start of the gathering.

@@chrisf9377 I don't think Labour are itching to rejoin Europe, quite frankly. In fact Starmer is on record as saying he wants to make the best of the situation regards Brexit. It is what it is. Besides, even if they wanted to we would have a referendum. Back in 1975 Britain voted to remain in the EEC. One of the biggest cheerleaders for staying in Europe? Margaret Thatcher. Times change and we had a referendum to leave Europe in 2016. It took several years of dithering and two Tory administrations before Boris took us out. Brexit was the will of the people. Now we are out, is life better or worse? Equally, being a member of the EEC had been democracy in action in 1973, rubberstamped in 1975. Times change.

Our council have put a statement on bidding on properties... I quote: We currently have more than 230 families and individuals who do not have a home and are living in bed and breakfasts and hotels, paid for by Nottingham city council at a cost of more than £500,000 a month. To help reduce this number and provide those who are living in bed and breakfasts for a long time with a secure home as quickly as possible, we will be pausing the advertising of council homes. We hope to advertise them again in the near future... To sum it up... British citizens are on pause from getting homes to house immigrants instead. Yet we have homeless on the streets why they're in 4/5 star hotels. Well if this country went to war you can have the immigrants fight it... I will not fight for my country that im a 2nd class citizen in. And no, the council dont pay the bill tax payers do.... The same taxpayers that now go back off the queue.... The people you see in this comments section are a screeching minority, as was shown by the election results - left-wing parties got 498 seats while right-wing parties got 126. Left-wing parties got about 60% of the vote, too - right-wingers got 38%. The Daily Express (this channel) is a right-wing British tabloid newspaper famous for posting fake news and generally misleading articles designed to fool people into voting against their own interests. Its readership is mostly over-75, white, conservative, racist, anti-EU, anti young people, anti-immigration (despite immigrants paying for their pensions), and they want freebie handouts from the state (their state pensions). In a nutshell, the Conservatives, historically a centre right party, have always been somewhat insulated to real public opinion and have followed what appeared to be the prevailing poltical wind toward "progressivism". At they the same time they have neglected their often touted (but rarely delivered) policies of smaller state, lower taxes, personal responsibilty, and control over immigration. This has over time alienated their core voters, many have whom have turned to a new party, Reform Uk, who are considered by many as "far right" due to their pledge to control UK borders. Voter apathy and votes dispersed among smaller parties has opened the door to the politcal left, who have won the GE with what is a historically low total amount of votes. People are understandably angry that we now have "progressive" socialists in power for the next 5 years.
