Thank God for recordings like this. Jarrett can't play anymore, but we can still enjoy him (and be uplifted thereby.)

Check out the 2023 Rick Beato podcast with KJ. Although his public performance days are over, he actually can still play some really beautiful music with just his right hand kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rs18ZpObqc7TgYk.htmlsi=kwvmyOfi0xkWOvcC

It almost sounds like if Erik Satie if he would have written this. I am always amazed At Jarrett's fine line of jazz/classical elements to his playing. He is one of the few that will be remembered 100, 200, 300 years from now.

Mr. Jarrett tells us the tragic story of Bess as "she explained it to him through this brilliant rendition" - "Bess's Lament". I would love to have seen Ms. Misty Copeland dance to this music while he is playing it. My eyes are tearing - this music is phenomenal. Sorry, but Gershwin did not play the story of Bess like Mr. Jarrett. Thank you for the genius and gracious music you left us, Keith.

Wow, what a stylist. I listened to Keith many years ago and his Death of a Flower album was one of my favorites. I also remember Nina Simone singing this song so beautifully. Jarrett shows incredible virtuosity to play it without words.

It's so beautifull to see all his emotions while he's playing.. his love and hate for the piano.. he truly embodies his music. It can't get anymore real than this for me. An ode to what man is capable doing.. not only musically but spiritually as well..

Getting old isn't that tough. Keep an open mind. One doesn't have to get rid of favorite horses or piano players. I just got on this horse, Jarrett. He's givin me a hellova ride. He took me to hear Danny Boy, and I Love You Porgy. A different, haunting, unforgettable sound for me. Jarrett is a thoroughbred. A winner. Discovery keeps me young and curious. Try it.

If this was the only tune Keith ever played, his legacy would be assured. But it's not. He imbues everything he plays with the soul of an artist. And it's a privilege to share a piece of that soul.

yes, macdries, I agree, before being a musician he is a great human being. He keeps his humbleness, he is not carried away by fame, he maintains his sensitivity intact. And that makes him a great pianist!
@markmcgruder1271 Жыл бұрын
I have the transcription of this performance. The notes are easy but try reproducing Keith Jarrett's tone and phrasing. The man is a Jazz pianist but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have an understanding of the piano equal to that of the best concert pianists in the world.

I understand musicians being sensitive to showboating, like a conductor that's trying to hard, as if he hears and feels things we can only dream of comprehending... but seriously, I feel Mr. Jarrett's movements on the inside when I hear this. It's marvelous.

Also, I find that listening to his solo work especially, like his recording of "Starbright", there is incredible tension in there. You can almost feel emotion pulling at it, as if it's dying to break free, and he doesn't let it and the effect is very powerful. He's so concentrated. Listen as deep as you can, the music is so precise. I think if I could play like that, I'd probably find myself moving like he does.

This is the only version of this song that I've heard that does justice to the emotion. It is one of the most powerful songs I know and yet you always hear it as some sort of jazz/lounge thing. Read the lyrics. You can't play this without it coming from the earth, and this performance, aside from being musically flawless (the harmony blows my mind) is an example of just that.

I am aware of his classical endeavors, but I ignored them in the past because so often when non-classical artists dabble in the classics, the results are unsatisfactory. However, now that I am aware of his talents, I will check them out, too. Of course, I already have thousands of classical cds which includes great performances of almost any keyboard work of importance.

@grandpepere13 жыл бұрын
This work is breathtaking. Keith is channeling the same spiritual feeling that Gershwin had through his own experience. The piano isn't the instrument playing the music. Keith's body is. The piano is a convenient extension for his hands and the hands are a convenient extension of his soul. This is pure movement! I have credentials to stand behind my assessment. This is genius.
