Thank you for sharing this amazing video. ❤ Playing from PURE SILENCE is the best way to improvise music. Music which gets 'downloaded' through our physical body and out through our fingers are unpredictable, unplanned and yet incredably amazing, full of surprises. Keith is in deep meditation each time he plays the piano even now that he's only able to play piano with one hand. My body gets the buzzing energy each time I hear him play. Thank you Mr. Keith Jarrett for your inspiration

Wow, what an incredible interview-thanks so much for posting it! The way he describes his motivation behind the improvised solo concerts reminded me of Allan Holdsworth's conception of improvisation. I also loved the Miles anecdote and the description of the 'Standards' group experience as well as the reflection on the personal demands of being an artist. Just a fantastic interview piece overall!

Definitely one of the greatest improvisers and jazz pianists of all times (That Köln concert still gives me goosebumps. Man, wish I was there in 1975...) Too bad there are so few in-depth interwiews with artists like this. On a side-note (!) - Keith gets exactly the same smile as Herbie Hancock when talking about his cooperation with Miles😄. Don't know if it's true, but Miles apparently once said about his rhythm section some time in the 1980's; "I've been looking my whole life for a drummer that can keep the time. Now I've found a drum machine that can". As always; thanks for uploading. Stay safe, and a happy new year. (Cold up here in Norway now, -30 C)

the drum quote sounds like a Miles original 😅 Nevertheless, I would say he always had good drummers on the stage - Tony Williams, Lenny White, Jack DeJohnette or Ricky Wellman in the 80ies, just to name a few....

Wie gut, dass das Du eingestellt hast, ich habe den Text bzw das was Keith Jarrett hier sagt - vielleicht vor 15 Jahren ? irgendwo gelesen und v.a. wenn man selbst improvisiert, können einen seine Worte, die aus seiner Eigenbeobachtung entstammen tief berühren. Für mich selbst gehört und gelesen, fühlte ich mich erkannt. Keith Jarrett gehört wirklich zu den größten Ausnahmeerscheinungen der improvisierten Klaviermusik und es stimmt mich sehr traurig, dass er seit Schlaganfällen keine Konzerte mehr geben kann. Vielen Dank.Uwe.

So sad that he can't do this any more and poignant that he spoke of physical disability would stop the relationship which was a bit of clairvoyance on his part as he has had more than one stroke but also his long time bass player Gary Peacock died recently. Jarrets legacy will like that of Bill Evans and all the "greats" live on in recordings. I can't say I understand his deep spiritual insights and I don't think it can be true that his hands dictate what his head will play - something weird about that - hands have no brains. But certainly his attachment to music was utterly unique. We will never see his like again.

Hands don't need brains. It's all connected. Anyone who's played an instrument to a proficient level knows that when you are performing you don't think about it. You've already put in the countless hours of practice and study and off you go.
