Oh, man I’m down Kevin Gordon rabbit hole! Over an hour down that hole. Hell- I knew about cutting with Lucinda. Folks from Louisiana are the greatest vocalists… born with soul bones in their throats. And he collects art & he’s an actual poet? Get outta here! Thanks, Otis. You have hipped me to so many geniuses. Geni? Including the music by Amy and by you. Owe you big time.

Kevin is the shining example of what’s wrong with the music business. A brilliant singer songwriter whose records are full of soul stirring, important works, that most people have never heard or heard of. It’s a cryin’ shame.

I had never heard this song before. After the Kevin Gordon interview I had to look up “Deuce & A Quarter” by Levon Helm & Keith Richards. AMAZING song! AMAZING story! In the video do I spot Cowboy Jack standing around? Is Ry Cooder in the clip? Brilliant story! But heartbreaking for me. Let’s have more Kevin, please? Unexpected fun, Otis! An unexpected surprise on an otherwise kinda crappy Tuesday afternoon… business with contractors, doctors, and buying shoes at a local Kohl’s. Keep driving, buddy! More Kevin, please.

I know Kevin said it’s lack of commercial success kept him humble, but you wrote a song that Keith Richards (a guy that’s written a ton of rock and roll classics) jammed out to and recorded. That’s pretty high praise and it’s something not many people can say has happen to their song. Well done Kevin. As always Otis, great video.

Exactly most of us songwriters never get to here anyone dig and interpret their tunes let alone someone at that level. I think that's top of the hill for most guys, any commercial success is secondary. Really having people listen to and connect with your music is the goal for most songwriters. Great vid!

What a great story! This has been a favorite song for many years, but I never bothered to learn the name of the song, let alone the creators. Shame on me. As someone who used to pore over liner notes, I was thwarted by the cassette and CD wave. I adore these stories. BTW, if you haven’t read Keith Richards’ autobiography, or listened on Audible, I highly recommend. I miss Levon Helm. 🌹🌹🌹

Great story Otis - first time I heard Deuce And A Quarter was when I was fortunate enough to have Kevin Gordon Band play live for me at a live music nightclub my family ran in St. Louis called Off Broadway (1984-2001). I'm sure this was Mid 90s right around when the Keef / Levon version came out. I have been out of the live music business since 2001 but all of Kevin Gordons music has always been in heavy rotation in my personal playlist. Always quality music from real songwriter that can rock just as well. Please seek this guy out - he is one of the best!

I played bass with dj fontana in a little pickup combo doing old standards and gospel-tinged things in the early 1990s - 1990 - 1993 or so. He knew I was a huge stones fan and especially Keith Richard's. He said he had to take some time off from us "to go do something with keith." I told him please hassle Keith to give me a guitar pick because then "I could then die happy." When he got back, he didn't have the pick. He said when he told Keith he asked if I was a good bass player. Dj said yes. "Well, we don't want him to go dying on you dj now do we?" So I never got the pick. But I did take it as a compliment so I'm happy. I still want the pick though. I miss dj- we had fun.

Then Fast Train, Burning the Church House Down, Watching the Sun Go Down, Cadillac Jack, Blue Collar Dollar. I'll stop- sorry- (He does the BEST live version of Teena Neena Nu.) He wrote a great song thats for sure! I believe I only heard this for the first time a couple of years ago. Never heard a thing about it till then. I see it was dome in 1996 so it sure is awhile ago but its timeless! I imagine it was never destined to be promoted , I love Levon's vocal but KEITH knocks it out of the park. His voice sounds incredible on this and I hear that solo he did as unmistakenly him. It sounds great, enjoy it everytime I hear it!

The version with Keef swings like a Ry Cooder song. Kev is definitely familiar with Ry. He was on Let It Bleed, Memo to Turner and he said Keith stole a few riffs from him.
