not a fan of mainstream country but i can appreciate great songwriting and a good hook; this is a prime example of that... though does anyone notice that the chord progression (and tone) in the chorus is a total rip of the who's teenage wasteland?

Swellebound 86 baba O'Reilly is the song....and the chord progression is not the same. Only the two loud chords are even similar, which many, many songs use a similar build up.

This is the "Generic Banjo" sound I always associate with country rock. To lazy to pay for a actual banjo player to back you so you throw a 300 dollar piece of Jazz trash in there and call it Banjo.
