Don't close your eyes, let it be me
Don't pretend it's him in some fantasy
Darling just once let yesterday go
And you'll find more love than you've ever known
Just hold me tight when you love me tonight
Don't close your eyes

My father passed away earlier this afternoon. 62 years old. Every Sunday he would make breakfast for us growing up, and he would have this album on cassette just playing on repeat and singing every word. My father is the reason I love Keith Whitley and country music the way that I do. Listening to this one loud as hell tonight for you old man. Hope you're singing along too.

@@cameronvelthuis1844 Yep that's what David Allen Coe and the writer believe. They're biased. My friends and I took months going over all the best country songs of every year from 1960 to now. Of course it's possible we got it wrong, but not for lack of effort. Hank Williams was before 1960 but we added him in.

Through my time of self discovery and going through the physical/ Emotional sobriety, I have to say that there's very few artists that helped me through the hard times .. but Keith's story and his music inspired me to continue to "keep fighting the good fight." All is not lost, Your Victory is just beginning." I still take it one day at a time ❤ & I'm so grateful to have a 2nd chance at life again 💯❤️

He couldn’t have known it, but Keith Whitley was on his way to becoming a legend during the late 1980s resurgence of a more-traditional country music sound (though Whitley seldom wore a cowboy hat like many). Having worked with Ricky Skaggs in Ralph Stanley’s band as a teenager, Whitley had the voice and the chops for Nashville. The number-one title track from his 1988 album Don’t Close Your Eyes made him a bona fide country star, but he died of alcohol poisoning at 33 about a year after its release. A song about a man’s request for his partner to forget a previous paramour and make love with her eyes open, “Don’t Close Your Eyes” has since become a slow-dance classic in every honky-tonk and roadside bar. It was written by Bob McDill, the Nashville songwriting giant whose songs were recorded by Waylon Jennings, Pam Tillis and many others. Don’t close your eyes let it be me Don’t pretend it’s him in some fantasy Darling just once let yesterday go And you’ll find more love than you’ve ever known Just hold me tight when you love me tonight And don’t close your eyes The song would later be cut by Alan Jackson and, taking it from the female point of view, Kellie Pickler. Where most country singles from those days are now a fond memory, the “Don’t Close Your Eyes” single today is, almost inexplicably, one of that era’s strongest sellers digitally.

Keith could have been among the greatest country artists ever. It just wasn't meant to be. Thank God for the sample we got. A great talent. RIP Mr. Whitley...
