Time for new kit? Why those arguments over specifications don't matter, and be wary of marketing

Does getting a new printer or camera really matter? After testing the Fujifilm GFX100 II, it's a better camera than the GFX100S and older GFX100. Why are people arguing over the specification and marketing materials.
What matters for your own photography and printing? When do you need to update?

Thank you for your new index. You have super knowledge. New photography kit buying I guess can be like a lot of things: Even for hardened pros the shiny new button might look attractive and if they are buying anyway it might be tempting to think why not? It's super to have a channel like yours to get some real-world need into these decisions - away from the shiny stuff.

I tend to hold onto my old equipment for a very long time, but there comes a point when I definitely feel it start to hold me back. I do portrait photography, and my previous digital camera had such a limited dynamic range that I had to HDR merge multiple shots to get usable shadow and highlight detail. I decided to invest in a newer (used) camera, and it has helped significantly. When someone asks me if they should get a new camera, I usually say that it's not necessary unless it's a burden that is actually preventing them from enjoying taking pictures or they hate the results they obtain for that reason.

Interesting comment, most people don't take enough photographs. Can you expand in a short video. Also what is your view on the life span of a photo. My opinion is 2 to 5 seconds. Even printed photos. How long do you realy looks at a photo. The longest time a print or image is revied is when the photographer is critiquing the image. For the viewer, how long does one actually look at a photo.

Good point - I'll have a think about expanding this. Times do indeed vary - some I have in the house I do pause and look at every so often, but they are bigger prints so have detail which draws you in

Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I’m a hobbyist photographer wanting to go professional in the future. I think I’m progressing steadily in my photography. Lately I’ve been thinking to start printing my images, since I’m more of an ‘analogue guy’. It always helps me to have something tangible to work with. Do you have any recommendations on how to get into printing? I have an Epson EcoTank 2825 at home (for office work). Is it possible to start with this printer and create custom profiles for it? My screens are of fine quality and calibrated. I have been able to tweak some settings and make color adjustments in de printer dialogue and the prints look OK at first glance, but the colors are way off of course.

First up - never use the printer controls to change colour - that's what your editor and icc profile are for. Perfect printing a known test image on a reasonable paper See here www.northlight-images.co.uk/printer-test-images/ I believe the printer is similar to www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-2850-printer-review/ Then for more about profiles and printing see the articles and here www.northlight-images.co.uk/keith-cooper-photography-videos-index/ Creating your own profiles - generally not a good idea for most people [expensive and requires quite a bit of background knowledge - the 'why' not just the 'how'] see the video index for related stuff, along with some of the reviews if 'better' printers such as the ET-8550

Use what you have and learn to use it well. If you switch to a different type of photography you may need to get new equipment. As if you start with bird photo you need a long lens and good AF. As an amateur I stopped at 12/36 and 45 Mpix FF DSLR for woodland and some infrastructure work and that was costly enough due to having to upgrading some old lenses that work well on my earlier D300 a APS-C camera but not on a 45Mpix FF . I like to switch to Fuji 100S but I cannot take better pictures with that equipment than my current stock and the cost is high. So I use what I have and try to do better but I keep an aye on what a 2nd hand Fuji 100s cost but the greatest cost is the lenses to that camera At least two Zooms are needed and a adapter too my old MF lenses..

How do you sharpen soft pictures due to F22 or F32 or old lenses? How do you manually fix CA on older lenses?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 9 ай бұрын
With care... ;-) Currently my pick is Topaz Sharpen AI - but I tend to do it via a masked adjustment layer - I've several articles/videos covering aspects of this - mainly for print. f/22 and particularly f/32 need solid reasons for the choice to use them though... CA is fixed with ACR

@@KeithCooper Thank you. I will read the articles. I have some old lenses that are soft in the corners and have CA on FF. I may use them for BW, and IR

Great video 👌 I’m from the uk and just subscribed, I’m a professional photographer and also a hobbyist too for my personal work too and use Fuji cameras and I want to start making prints to mount them and could you recommend a printer for a budget of upto £2k for printing prints upto around 15x10 inch prints ?
