This was filmed in Pa Bobo's living room at Jali Kunda, Brikama in The Gambia. This was an electric, spine-tingling occasion for me. It felt such an honour to record Dembo. At one point I was holding the tripod steady with one hand, to prevent Pa Bobo's young son from kicking it and holding the door behind me shut with the other, to stop anybody coming in.

Pa Bobo Jobarteh is the son of Malamini Jobarteh, who is Dembo Konte's (adopted) older brother.

Good question. I think he is widely believed to be Mandinka but Roderic Knight notes in www.mandebala.net/references/kelefaba.php that "'...jola in Mandinka means "payer"-one who pays, or in this case, repays. Thus Jola Kelefa may be interpreted to mean "Kelefa the Avenger."'
