Might be my favorite Batman artist ever. Jones is just perfect for Batman. I don’t know where the conceit that Batman dresses like a bat to instill fear in criminals came from, but I think Jones is one of the few artists who ever sold the idea that Batman is a scary looking dude.

Great overview of this book, guys. I appreciate the props as the inker, as you all know we don't get as much attention sometimes, so it is nice to be noted! BTW, it was me who was putting in the color notes in the margins. Doug, Kelley, and I worked on many Batman projects for 8 years. Three of those years being on the monthly Batman comic. Love your channel been a long-time subscriber and viewer. Great to binge-watch/listen to while working on some art.

John, thanks for answering some questions. As for your inking, I think it's an integral part this art and what I enjoy about this art. I find it very inspiring! Thank you for making something special! - JR

I've always loved your work, esp. with Zeck - you two do a Cap second only to Kirby w Giacoia or Sinnott. I was unfamiliar with the Batman work, which looks amazing, going to have to hunt down some of those issues! Thank you for all the great inking over the years.

Beatty inking is great, makes Jones a bit closer to Michael Golden for sure. Probably because they worked together on The 'Nam to wonderful results. And he came right after a great job by Armando Gil and a rare inking gig by Rebel creator Pepe Moreno.

Dig Kelley Jones. He's part of a school with few students, the cartoony with highly dramatic lighting. Hilary Barta is on that spectrum too, further to the cartoony side.

Kelley Jones is one of the few creators whose work I buy every time something by him is released. I first discovered him on The Sandman and was instantly a fan. He's one of those guys whose work truly looks like nobody else's - you know it's him the second you see it, like with Kirby, Allred or Mignola.

I’ve always loved Kelly Jones style. The bold borders and sharp shadows pop out so strongly. It’s a good match for Batman. I would like to see you guys cover the new Ahoy series G.I.L.T. It has some of the best art of Alain Mauricet’s career. Really great characters

Jones only did the covers for Knightfall. They actually asked Keith, but he had a little breakdown and Jones stepped in. Jones took over after Knightfall, in like '95. You guys should do a video on the Jones Deadman Gallery Edition.

One thing about Jones is that his work needs a truly amazing inker, and that really makes these pages land. IMO this inkwork is up there w/ Wrightson, Booth, Finlay, easily. Stunning and took these runs to a whole other level of serious fine art. Legendary mark-making and knitting of light/dark, unfathomable to me! 😯

I never meant to have a longbox of batman and tec comics. But Jones is the first eye grab next to Keith and Mcfarlane. Like you see the Adams and Giordanos alot and it becomes "the norm". Your eye knows it AS Batman. So these just stand out and it stops your rummaging for that extra split second.

some of my favorite Batman art of all time. Around the 9:46 mark - who is the white silhouette who appears to be hanging a puppet of Batman? is this just some random Arkham inmate? Is this related to another story?

Man, I hated his work as a kid. Everything was lumpy and ugly. Going back now I can appreciate it as a horror style. I remember his covers better than 90 percent of the other comics coming out at the time so obviously he was doing it right

Never seen a Batman so ugly that he seems like a caricature of himself, grotesque, with a totally wrong anatomy, deformed and overall very badly drawn. The great thing is that authors of this genre are also praised as great artists... we are at the end..
