I am a crocheter and you are making what are called chains with your hook. When you put your hook into the original slip knot and pull the yarn or material through, you are making a chain. Your technique is great and this is a great idea for using crochet for yet another idea.

Love this!! If anyone is curious, it took me just over 10 yards of S-lon. I am an experienced crocheter, so if you are not, I'd cut an extra foot or two just to be on the safe side. Also, I did use a 2mm crochet hook, so if you use a different size hook, 10 yards won't be enough.

Thank you for this fun video! I have a tip that I use to determine Approx how much string and beads I’ll need. Keeping the string on the spool, add just a few beads and go ahead and crochet a one inch length. Count how many beads it took. Then multiply that number by the length that you want. (10 beads X a 36 inch length = 360 beads) . If you need to know your string length, unravel this one inch piece of work, measure the string that you used and once again multiply by the length that you want. These numbers will get you close, but keeping the string on the spool will allow you to add more beads and length from the opposite end when you cut it and continue on to the perfect length that you want. ❤

If you have some beeswax and the threading end on your crocheting cord gets frayed, rub the beeswax onto the end and it stiffens up the end and makes threading easier. Leaving the wax on the cord overnight helps even more.

What a great tutorial. I’ve been a crocheter for 50+ years and as you were saying probably not the right terms, I said, who cares? It doesn’t matter what word you use to describe an action as long as the person watching learns/understands the technique. If they want, they can always go on to learn the crochet terminology later. What’s important is that they have fun and learn something new. My only tip was going to say don’t cut the cord from the spool, but you already covered that👍🏻 This opens a whole new world of possibilities for jewelry. If the crochet chain bracelet gets someone exited, they might want to move on to single crochet beading which creates a little wider base. They also might venture into the world of bead crochet as well, where they can create beautiful hollow tube jewelry. The possibilities are truly endless! I love seeing someone new to crochet get the “bug” or addiction as I call it. With a hook & a string the world is your oyster! Another place to find inexpensive hooks, yarn, & even beads is thrift stores. I once bought an entire bag of the steel hook (like you used), a giant ziplock bag for $1.00! Bargains are there to be found. When I was teaching, I was easily able to give all my students a hook without breaking the bank. Oh, I guess thats more than 1 tip 😂 There are lots of ways to build up the shaft of the hook to help with arthritis. I have osteo and rheumatoid arthritis so using the tiny hooks take their toll on my hands. The latest versions I’ve seen on KZfaq & TikTok are people putting a tennis ball on their hook or beauty blenders. You just pierce the hook right through the ball or blender, using the ball or blender as your handle. The demonstrators said there’s a learning curve to using it but once you get the hang of it, it becomes simple and less tiring/painful on the hand. The craft stores also sell an ergonomic handle you can insert your hook into that will tighten up around the hook like a drill chuck works. Lastly if you have kids or grandkids that have tons of the rainbow loom bands you can make a holder around the hook from them. Ok, I think that’s it. I’ll stop before my comment becomes a novella. Thanks for sharing your project. Cheers from FL😺

Thanks so much for the tips. I really love to crochet and wish I had spent more time learning from my paternal Grandmother. She was a master at crocheting. I still have the huge table cloth she made me for a wedding gift in the pineapple pattern. I don’t think I ever saw her just sitting. Always knitting or crocheting. I’m glad it’s not a lost art as it’s so much fun to do. Maybe it’s time for me to break out of my one truck pony and see what else I can create!

@@KelliesBeadBoutique you’re very welcome. That’s wonderful memories of your Grandmother. My one Aunt was like that too. Always making something. She made huge bedspreads as well as tablecloths, doilies, etc. for the house. They were made from the #10 cotton thread. The kind that comes on the cones. She created all her own patterns and was definitely an artist. She also made all kinds of winter clothes for the family. I have two gorgeous and huge doilies she made for my wedding. I cherish them even more as she is long gone. I learned crochet in 4H. I was taught by a lefty. It took them a while to figure out why I was having issues back then. They thought I must be dyslexic. When they figured out I was right handed they set me opposite her and it was smooth sailing from that moment on. I think I was maybe 6 or 7 when I learned. After that I just devoured everything I could learn about it. My latest obsession is mosaic crochet. There is a woman from Iceland who teaches it on KZfaq. Looks super complicated, but extremely easy. You should check it out. Also another great KZfaqr is Crystal at Bag-o-day crochet. She has over 1100 free tutorials on her channel for anything you can imagine to try and do. Both of them are excellent teachers. To change up your crochet bracelets you can always try making one with a button as the clasp. You have so many beautiful Tierra cast ones. You can just tie the button onto your cord. When you’ve made as many wraps as you want you can create a chain without the beads that when folded in half is long enough to slip the button through, but not so loose that it falls off. You attach your last chain to the first chain of your intended loop by putting your hook through the first chain of the closure, wrap the cord over the hook, and pull it through both loops on the hook. It’s called a slip stitch. If I confused you there are tons of YT tutorials showing it. That will close the loop and attach it to your beaded chain. You can always tie a couple knots to make sure it’s secure. You’d put it on the same way you would any other type of wrap bracelet (like the Chan Luu style). With your creative style, I’m sure you’ll come up with absolutely beautiful designs. As a side note, I saw a woman take old crochet pieces from her family and others she found at the thrift store and turned them into a curtain by stitching them all together. Very Bohemian and a great way to display pieces that were just tucked away. Looking forward to your next design. Cheers from FL😺

Another great video Kellie. You really must ignore unpleasant people that enjoy being negative. To what end anyway? Love the project, using S-Lon, and using the clip. I usually make S-Lon a self needle, dip end into clear nail polish then replace cap without screwing it down. pull thread out. Lid scrapes off excess polish. Run fingers over it, let it dry and it usually does the job for entire project. But we all do things differently. Look forward to more videos ( no pressure😳).

Actually the easiest way to make sure you have enough thread for this particular type of bracelet is to not cut your thread from the spool. Place all of your beads onto the thread, create a slip knot at the beginning to hold your hook and begin to crochet, this way if your stiches are larger than expect due to not being familiar with crochet or using a larger hook, you do not run out of thread, of if your stitches are tighter you do not have an excessive amount of leftover thread. I make these and crochet necklaces like this often.

Kellie, this has been amazing to learn. I am not a crocheter either!. So I had to learn from scratch. It has been tropical storm torrential rain for days now here in Cozumel. No internet most of the time, and sometimes no power. Anyhow, funny part was it took me a while to get the slip not and the crochet part. When I finally got to the end of my 165 beads, the internet was out and I couldn't see how to finish. Saved it for the next day. You have saved me during this "tropical storm" season. Easy to do and looks great. Thank you so much.

I so love this lovely piece and your instruction is nice, no cutesy nonsense, thanx. What a great idea. The crochet word for what you are doing is chain stitch, the simplest crochet of all and the most soothing and meditative I think, and the foundation for all crochet. I am a newbie crochet and this I can do, glad it's so simple yet elegant. I make seed beads on memory wire but they are stiff and not that easy to wear at least for me. I have so many beautiful seeds that cry out to me but I had no idea of how to do use them easily. Will check out your website, thanx so much.
