Now it’s impossible for him to leave the city of Buffalo. Despite not winning a Super Bowl here in Buffalo he means more to this city than anyone could ever imagined. He’s so well loved here in Buffalo that it’s mind boggling and his two beautiful daughters are as die hard Bills fans as this great QB was. He doesn’t have the Kelly club suites named after him for no reason. He’s been through hell and back but his toughness, determination and his faith with God and support of the fans get him through the rough times.

And if you include his USFL stats (which you should as it was a Pro Football League!), Jim Kelly is pretty underrated

Seems to me it worked out well for all parties involved in the long run with Jim Kelly signing with the Houston Gamblers. For Kelly, it allowed him to play immediately and develop on a professional level. If he had signed with Buffalo, he would have sat behind veteran Joe Ferguson. Kelly also had the opportunity to develop as a passer in the run and shoot. At the same, time Buffalo was going 2-14 in 84 and 85 so it might not have been the best environment for a young QB. When the USFL folded, the Bills had a more polished rookie QB. Also, Kelly's experience in the R&S would serve him well running the K-Gun that got the Bills to the Super Bowl.

I don't blame him for not wanting to play in the cold. I'm from the, Midwest. It's basically cold from October to, May. Last year it was still 30 degrees in, June! We get all the weather. It's been written out of history in Buffalo, but Kelly wasn't well-liked when he finally came to Buffalo, after all this had happened, then he went 10-18 in his first two seasons (not counting the strike games) with less than impressive numbers. He was getting booed in those days (watch the first half of game 6 of his 3rd season vs. The Colts to hear him being roundly booed at home in Buffalo - I was there.) Ironically, that was the very game where Kelly-Thomas-Reed was truly born, and they went on to win that one.
@RichV20
@RichV20 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's been written out. His first years of growing pains NFL ball have been overshadowed by his Super Bowl run of the early 90s and K-Gun offense. His mediocre QB play was still greater than the mid-80s Bills. When he signed in 1986, there was a rush on Bills tickets the next day.

Jim Kelly was such a class guy, just as good at times as Elway and Marino. 4 straight AFC crowns. 4 straight SB's . Think his toughness and decision making really helped the Bills get there. And the likes of Bruce Smith, Cornelius Bennett, Andre Reed and Thurman Thomas helped. How's he doing these days, heard he had throat cancer. Again, Kelly came from the great QB in 1983.

@@andyc9979Yep, Jim could move pretty well for a few years. His arm was a cannon back in them days. His legs started taking major hits in 1992 in the season finale at Houston, and then a few weeks later in the Super Bowl vs Dallas he suffered that game ending same leg injury. Dallas went for his legs. John Randle of the Minnesota Vikings put a cheap shot on Kelly’s knee in 1994 ending his season and the drive for five. Jim had some moments in 1995, but he was never the same. By 1996 it was clear Jim had no legs under him anymore and Jim retired.

Yeah, cuz he was on his ass and under constant pressure in 3/4 of those Super Bowls. The Bills line play on both sides of the ball is why they lost the last three Super Bowls.
