"HONOLUA BAY WITH KELLY SLATER" (BEST RAW)
In 2016 Kelly Slater came to Honolua Bay, on Maui during a powerful large north west swell that peaked later in the day right before sunset, the crowd was small with very few experienced surfers out and lots of perfect waves coming in before the day ended.
Watching Kelly Slater surf Honolua Bay for the first time on a good day was incredible and a dream come true as he has been one of my biggest inspirations. The lines he was drawing were so mesmerizing and he was surfing Honolua Bay like he has surfed it his whole life.
Filming this was so much fun, screaming after every wave with stoke capturing Kelly do his thing. A great memory of the greatest surfer of all time, to share with you all. SUBSCRIBE for more action as a new winter season is headed our way.

Dominating the line-up, getting more than his fair share of waves, in Hawaii none the less, and all this while getting close to 50 years old. Absolutely the GOAT. No athlete in any sport has consistently stayed at the top/elite level of his sport for as long as Kelly has.

@@jaydickey1049 Close...but no.Tom was average/ slightly above average in college, was a late round pick, was the backup until the starter got injured. Kelly was the youngest WC ever in surfing, and he was the oldest ever. Tom was well into his 20's before you knew who he was, Kelly was already being considered one of the best ever before he hit 20. He dominated the junior east coast tour, and continued his domination into the ASP. Only recently has he started showing his age in smaller surf where air's are a huge part of a surfers tool box, but in waves on consequence he is still a threat to win, Pipe/Backdoor, Teahupo'o, Cloudbreak. Dont get me wrong though, Tom plays a much more violent sport, and his longevity is nothing short of miraculous....in fact he looks better/younger this year than he has the last several years.

See: George Foreman. and in a MUCH tougher sport. won golden gloves and olympic gold in hw division as a teenager. won heavyweight title at nearly 46 years old---and defended it at 48. slater last won his world title at 39. Foreman's career record: 76-5 (with 68 knockouts). defended his world championship titles at least 30 times. each title defense, mind you, is essentially like winning the title anew. anyhow, he's one i thought of

I respect him so much more now from this vid where he actively manoeuvres to avoid people duck diving. @seancallahan1312

Absolutely nothing wrong with running over kooks. As long as it's the end of the wave. If someone can't figure out "paddle around the break, not through it" after it being printed online for decades and posted at every beginner spot, it might be nice just to cancel their surf career before it really starts. There's already enough lames everywhere.

That’s the ‘caves’ section in most of the videos. There are several different sections to the wave from ‘subs’, ‘coconuts’, ‘the point’ before you get to the caves and then a few more after. On some swells the sections are all or mostly fractionated. But when it’s working they all line up and it’s the ride of a lifetime. The caves is brutal. I got stuffed by a guy right there and had to straighten out. It sends you into this little pocket in the cliff. Like a tiny cove. The bottom there is composed of huge smooth stones the size of small boulders that get gradually smaller towards shore. And when it’s big those 100 lb stones are moving around like pebbles around your ankles as you’re trying to walk in. It sounds like an earthquake when a wave rushes in and tosses thousands of massive stones on top of each other. You get stuffed here and you’re pretty much done. It’s truly frightening. That was the only time I ever ‘paddled’ in there. I was forced to straighten out and there is no way you’re getting back out through the caves when it’s big. And it was 7-8 ft that day. Easily 15 ft faces. Although I guess you could try and ride the whitewater at the edge of the bay til it lets you out. But when it’s big, that whitewater is like an exploding bomb at the caves. The video makes it look like it’s breaking way out in open water, but right at the bottom edge of the video the shoreline of the caves section starts. What’s great about Honolua is that the outside sections, Subs and coconuts, are more gradual. The drop is less critical as the water is fairly deep with a gradual slope of these massive rock ledges that lie on an incline. So it’s not like the wave is abruptly hitting a reef ledge and jacking, but rather a more gradual incline making for an easier drop on a more inclined wave face. A lot of longboarders will sit on those two sections. So you can set yourself up for the caves section fairly easily because you have time to see the barrel coming and it’s super predictable. As opposed to a place like pipe. Which is admittedly out of my league at this point as you have to tuck in on a vertical face right from the get go where the wave is sucking up amazingly fast and seems like it’s driving you back up the face while you’re just trying to get down the face. But that line up was unusually sparse in this shot. When Honolua is breaking, the whole island knows about it by the end of the day everyone converges on it by the afternoon. We actually would surf it on southwest swells during the big El Niño of 96. I know it doesn’t look like it but it could catch a southwest swell and break fairly decently although Northwest swells are it’s bread and butter. But the southwest swells were kinda sneaker swells. No one is thinking of checking the Bay during the summer. We only knew about it because we could see part of the Bay from the Ritz where we worked. In the summer the Bay is so calm it’s a pretty good snorkel spot. Except for the tigers that cruise the ledges looking for turtles. Yep, I’ve seen em. So we’d get to surf Honolua uncrowded for almost a full day before a few stragglers would fill in. Was awesome. Truly. A world class wave with less than a dozen guys out. And believe me, the lineup has tons of room with dozens of take off spots. But on a NW swell in the winter, forget about it. It’s a madhouse. Guys fly in from Oahu, the big island and Kauai just to surf that wave when it’s on. It looks like Rincon when it’s on as far as the crowd. There’s like 10 surfers every ten square feet from subs til the very last scraps of the the wave. Reach out and touch someone. And it’s a long fucking wave.

@juufro8952 2 жыл бұрын
Nice write up of the spot. I only surfed it on head high day and it was a blast. I can see why people get hooked to this spot for a lifetime. That cave looks spooky. I think it would be quite intimidating on days like this video to make the barrel or possibly die getting stuffed in there.

@@motorizedjunk6666 absolutely-you know A lot of guys thought the whole point of the waves was the Caves- it was a photo op cuz every photographer basically just zeroes in on the Caves.
