Few folks know that you can get an overnight backcountry pass in the Petrified Forest National Park. You park at a pullout and start backpacking in any direction (certain areas are set aside) for as far as you want and set up for the night. They will lock your vehicle inside the park boundary. The dark skies are incredible.

I don’t know exactly where y’all are right now but to the south of PFNP is an area called the White Mountains! In the summer it is wonderfully cool. Towns or Show Low ,Alpine , and Pine Top are so good. But the White mountains are gorgeous! Lots of Nat Forest land and I imagine dispersed camping for y’all.

Over the years people have taken pieces of the petrified wood home with them. I remember going when I was a kid and they caught people stealing the petrified wood. People need to remember that if everyone takes a piece, then it will all be gone. Have fun at the Grand Canyon!!

My last visit to Petrified Forest it was around 100° and sunny, so you had a much more pleasant experience on the trails. The colors in the painted desert section of the park are amazing, especially early or late in the day. Enjoy kids!

wow, what a difference a couple weeks make! Road trips cures a lot of ills, making sandwiches, restaurants, hitting natty parks, running from the rain (imagine doing that on the AT: suck it up buttercup ;^) Driving 15 hours, sometimes you just gotta have fun!

Stopped at the park last September after we picked up our RV in Ohio. Had always been on my bucket list. The colors were amazing and seeing the petrified trees topped it off. Glad you're back on the road.

Nice to see you on the road having fun, the trails will allways be there. Obviously check out Desert Solitaire and The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey who was a ranger there back in the day. He is also the modern day Thoreau about Environmentalism and keeping one's Sovereignty against Govern Ment.

I'm glad that you two are having a good time. When my wife and I traveled together, she had to keep talking to me because I have sleep apnea. She'd lay on the bed in back and we'd talk about everything. The AAA guide books were handy for pointing out interesting sites. The National Park Pass is a good idea. In the 1970s there was a "Golden Eagle Pass" that let me into National Parks and Forests. Have fun. Good Luck, Rick

That's fun, the Petrified Forest. Gosh, back in 2011, I sold my boat and filled a U-Haul to relocate back to the beach in California (from New York), but I took Highway 40 all the way back. Stopped at the Petrified Forest, and Ortega's Indian Jewelry in Gallup NM. I think there is a trip video on my mdougan1000 channel. Love the way you two are traveling. You look a lot better than the last video I saw, so, whatever you are doing is good. Hugs!

Hi Kelly glad you're back what a cool vlog! The piece of petrified wood that was quartz mostly was gorgeous thank you James for the commentary. I kept wondering is James her boyfriend? And yeah you finally announced that at the beginning 😆 I sure as heck hope that fatigue does not last lifelong with you from the covid like it has with my niece about your age and my sister older than me. I've suffered with it for 20 years because of my very progressed Rheumatic disease. So I know exactly what it's like and it's really hard to deal with for sure. When you wake up feeling like you've been ran over by a flipping freight train for the entire day. Enough about that looking forward to this journey you're on.. Okay safe and happy travels as always😘✌

Great to see you two exploring the sites out west. Will you make it to Crater Lake NP? Maybe then take in a really different restaurant east of there called the "Cowboy Dinner Tree"? (near the little town of Silver Lake). Check times and reservations. John Day Fossil Beds NM is cool. Check out the Painted Hills Unit and the Sheep Rock Unit Happy travels. Don from Oregon.

Those "desert deer's" are actually pronghorn antelope. They are all over the western US in the desert type areas. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pronghorn UPDATE: I watched the rest of the video and see that you discovered that they are pronghorn.
@TheJhtlag
@TheJhtlag 2 жыл бұрын
and they're trying to get us to say "pronghorns" because technically they're not really antelopes, there are no antelopes in the western hemisphere. (same with cedars even though you'll see cedar this and cedar that all over the place)

I'm going to recommend a couple of books by Ed Abbey which relate directly to your destination. "Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness" (1968), is Abbey's account of being a seasonal park ranger at Arches National Monument in the late '50s. And "The Monkey Wrench Gang" (1975) which is a novel about protecting the environment by sabotage and is hilarious. Total romp. I'm amazed it hasn't been made into a movie. Maybe that's a good thing.
@Galiuros
@Galiuros 2 жыл бұрын
There have been at least a half dozen attempts to make a movie of The Monkey Wrench Gang. None successful for various reasons. Two of his novels have been made into movies. Lonely Are the Brave (book title, The Brave Cowboy) staring Kirk Douglas and Walter Matthau. The other novel turned into a movie was Fire on the Mountain staring Buddy Ebsen and Ron Howard.

This unexpected trip is so nice!!! You look so much better and happier than you were on the grueling trail and it’s a lovely idea to do this instead. Interesting how it looks like pyramids or possibly pagan cultures destroyed by volcano. ( I have done no research on this just my imagination) It reminds me of what God did to really evil people in the Old Testament. Like in Israel you can still see Sodom and Gomorrah and light the brimstone on fire. It is like a desert wasteland too. Those are jingle dancers!! Yum the food looks so good!! James and his hobo joke, bahahaha.

$12 for up to an hour and they provide a towel. Not too bad of a deal when you only do it once or twice a week
@LukeAndersson1
@LukeAndersson1 2 жыл бұрын
12 dollars for a shower? Did they shower you with champagne? Wow, that's a lot for a shower. The room was nice though, so that was cool. Still 24 bucks for the two of you to take showers seems like a money making scam they get away with. I run a camping park on the beach here in California and our showers are 1 dollar for three minutes of hot water and we are in a drought. Just sayin.
@kellyhays23
@kellyhays23 2 жыл бұрын
It’s for an entire hour, they provide a towel, soap, shampoo and conditioner and it was worth every penny after not showering for a few days. Do this one a week and it’s not that bad
@LukeAndersson1
@LukeAndersson1 2 жыл бұрын
Well that sounds better, an hour is a long time to shower, but once a week and you could use an hour to relax and get clean. If you and James come to California and you are near Santa Barbara, come stay at Jalama beach park on me. I retire at the end of this year so after that you may have a hard time getting in because it's a small park and it's popular. But I would be stoked to hook you two up. A little pay back for all the entertainment and enjoyment you have given me from watching your journey on YT. Happy travels!
