Kelsey Plum tells her story from childhood and how she was doubted. She found success but was still empty and went to a very dark place. Plum talks about how she came out of it and how an injury helped her rebuild her mind set.

I have followed this player's sporting career since High School, college and the NBA and I never had any idea she was going through these mental struggles, but her story of how she overcame this is amazing. Although she almost diagnosed and solved her own problems, she should have asked for help and calling random people on the phone was a great start. I'm truly happy for her, her family and her team that her life is now more balanced besides just sports.

@@back2sports i follow the W to a degree, and I was surprised to notice that Kelsey had accolades galore and also the highest scoring total in NCAAW (25 ppg), but her first few seasons the Stars/Aces were good at 9 PPG, but not as high as was expected from the scoringest college female (from a D1 School too) and #1 WNBA selection. I wondered, at the time, if Kelsey had stumbled in transition from college to the pros because of personal issues - it is clear now she had things going on in her psyche that chipped away at her. Her last two seasons have been 15 and 20 PPG, darn fine numbers (that's like scoring 19-24 ppg the NBA) so Kelsey has found herself and also her groove in a way she couldnt as a #1 pick in her first three seasons.

As a former “hoopaholic” her story is not all that typical but not unheard of. IMO this is mostly in part due to the amount of time and effort (she even acknowledges it) put in to be the best you can be in a particular athletic sport…. And this is where some go off track, not having a base view of life and involvement in other aspects of life. One always needs other outlets to keep a perspective and not become consumed with THE SPORT. One always must keep in mind… one can’t play the sport for ever. There will come a time you have to retire. Playing down was never in my plan… once I saw I was not at the top anymore in games… I knew… then there were the comments signaling it’s coming….. as we were near death in the locker room after a great comeback win… the other team complained about being beat by a bunch of “old guys” who shot the lights out…. We laughed but knew it was near the end. Game over… life goes on….

Every athlete in whatever sport needs to see this. If a player has a passion for a sport, they absolutely need a support structure. But they need to be rooted in the realization that one small injury can bring it all down. That they need to have a goal for their lives other than sports. God can provide all answers if you just listen.

It was hard because as Captain of point guard of basketball and being drafted it was a slap to the face, but she was crying and never forget about those years in high school and college being harass and pick on staked, to her mind enough is enough.

I'm glad that I watched the whole thing. I was thinking, "This woman is living her dream, yet she is somehow a victim". There are people in this world where the whole system is designed to make sure they fail and they keep overcoming. One thing I have seen in regards to suicide is that, that person holds the threat of it over the one's who love them. But once you gone, you are gone and guess what? You will be just a memory, then a distant memory, and then forgotten. Life is like that.

It probably is hard for WNBA players because they don't seem to have any role models they respect. They seem to think they have to act like prima donnas in order to eventually get paid like superstars. Unfortunately, they're not real superstars so they're living a lie, and they often look foolish. Then some kid comes in who really is a superstar, and they don't know how to deal with her. I could see how that would be hard. However, everybody has their own cross to bare. A little humility would go a long way for them.

Better life financially doesn’t equal a better life. Sometimes the struggle and sacrifices to get there don’t equal the success you get. My life coach told me success is like an iceberg. People see that big iceberg and are like wow..that’s big. But under the water..it’s three times as big. What you see..is never all that’s going on.
