You and two other guys on Kemper forums one of which is now banned for useless trolling, the other sold the Kemper and moved on are not exactly "so much noise". At the moment is only you. Good video Andertons, POD still holds its ground :)

To be fair though, the criticism of the Pod over the years has been in the way it breaks up which you can begin to hear even in this video and the guys mention in regards to high gain amps. The Pod has a unique high gain fizz or voicing that many people simply EQ'd out in recording and it's weakness had always been how it behaves for mid gain crunch which can be heard here as the gain comes up. This is something the Kemper was clearly better at in the video and I don't have a Kemper and am not considering getting a Kemper so there is no bias here. There is no doubt in my mind that Line6 still holds its own today and second hand offers exceptional value. And something I find very humorous is how the public raves about certain modelling today (not in this video) that doesn't sound better than older modelling from Line6 and some others that they wouldn't consider.

Well they do clearly favor line6 stuff, but the modeling in Amplifire and feel are the most dynamic and tubelike if you nail the right settings and IR. Cleaner tones are easy for digital stuff, but on crunch and gainy stuff, I've yet to hear better, except for axe FX or, mayb,le, kemper. The only significant downside to AA imho is the need to really have a pc nearby for proper quick editing. Would they incorporate the tech into a doitall unit with interface with smart choice of default IR files, I believe people would immediately notice the difference when actually playing through it. It is a bit painful to program and truth be told Boss does have some compelling stuff with their Katanas and GT line of processors, if we look at preset availability and how friendly progamming sounds is.

For it's age the POD sounded pretty good. I thought the Atomic Amplifire sounded like ass. Kemper should smoke the others for the money it costs, so no surprise there. Would have been nice to hear a BOSS GT1 in there (hard to beat on value for money) or a newer Line 6 product like the Amplifi fx100.

I still use one of the early "script" versions of the POD 2.0 with an original Floor Board. It's stupidly easy to find great tones in it. A point about getting great tone out of the POD is to use the highest Chan Vol possible to improve the signal-to-noise ratio.

totally agree except for the most AWFUL amp i've ever played thru. that would be the Fender Mustang GTX. all the tones from that amp were awful. i felt terrible for my bandmate who picked it up when they came out like 10 years ago or whatever. thats the only amp where no matter what, i sounded like shit, couldnt hear myself, all the notes sounded 'wrong'. despite the thousand knobs and options we just couldnt get anything good out of it. thats almost my opinion on all modeling amps, i just personally like to plug n play, but some bandmates like having a thousand tone options and after owning the gear for a while can eek out some decent tones. differnt strokes for differnt folks

I'm 2 years late BUT - they all do the Deluxe well, it's when the AC30 comes into play that you can tell how far amp/cab modeling has come. The Kemper sounds way better than the POD and Amplifire for power tube modeling. When the JCM800 round starts and each is played once, you can really hear how far ahead the Kemper is. Something about power tube responses is very difficult to model and Kemper has more refinement in that department from 20 years of audio engineering. By the time you get to the Boogie models, you can hear that the POD soungs massively digital and the Amplifire has its weird midrange issues still but the Kemper's sag and clipping are miles ahead of both. Cool video!

So he can't obviously come out and say anything like "wow, that sounded like shit!" but he doesnt have to. The demo speaks for itself. Still I agree with others that the AA sounds far better in other vids, including on this channel so not sure what the deal was.
@andreil1234
@andreil1234 2 жыл бұрын
I too prefer to use the pod at home due to its simplicity. If you factor in cabsim off + IR pedal at the end the gap becomes much smaller and the only thing visibly lacking could be dynamics. Had the AA6, nice unit, didn't gel with it at all. Also very annoying to avoid clipping and needed constant atjustment to different volume levels unlike other modelers.

I'm sorry, but the Amplifire was by far the worst. I was shopping for a modeller for home recording about a year ago, and I gave the Amplifire every chance I could because I wanted to get a more affordable option, but this is exactly why I passed it up and just went all in with a Fractal instead. That nasty earsplitting high end fizzle. It's just there on the Amplifire and it's awful.

The POD sounds scratchy and compressed like an AM radio through these headphones. The Amplifire is cleaner. But the Kemper sounds OPEN and dynamic by comparison. And, Arefin... The POD shown here hasn't been available for retail sale for 15 years. I don't think Lee is trying to push POD v1s on people. Well, OK, perhaps he found a container loaded with them that washed off a ship in 2000 on desert island, but that's not likely.

Glen over the top distain for Line6 is irrational. "Good Tone" is completely subjective. Glen doesn't like a Line6 tone. Fine. Other's think it's fine. There is really no reason for this video to show Line6 in a positive light when the Amplifire and Kemper are both sold by Anderton's and the Line6 isn't in production. It just is what it is.

I have both the Kemper and the Amplifire and, while the AF certainly has a tendency to sound quite bright with the stock settings and cabs, it also gives a lot of options to customize the tone by adjusting the amp/cab parameters and loading external IRs. It can sound a lot better than this, it just needs some work to get there.

You could buy a POD for £50 and *still* be able to afford a PRS S2 for less money than a Kemper alone. And that combo sounds just great - as this demo illustrates very clearly. I feel sorry for the Atomic makers - over ten times more than a used POD and sounded really poor in comparison.

I’ve been gigging with a line 6 pod HD plus and a few added pedals and have never been disappointed with any of the tones I’ve gotten. Yes, my real tube amp gets some breakup tones that are better, but unless I’m recording, my pod gets like 98% of the perfect tone I want so it saves a lot with carrying and setting up. Sound checking in different venues is always a breeze with it and can go straight through the PA so the sound people always love it too. I get compliments on my tone pretty frequently and when I tell them I’m using a pod they just can’t believe it. If you’re thinking about getting one do it, best money I’ve spent!

If I remember this correctly: the Fenders in the first POD were based on amps owned by country/ blues guitarist Pete Anderson ( who is the name on several Reverend guitars, which Andertons sell) and he still uses the PODs live.

The difderence IMO is what becomes a usuable option outside of the studio. Try hitting each device with a Morning Glory and Timmy and tell me which device creates a usable tone. Roll off the volume, dig in, blend a two pickup tone....the Kemper responds like the real amplifier in these cases, the two other devices just don't.

I am an old guy from Canada and yes, still a gear head at 60 years old. I have owned the Line6 HD 500 rackmount and the first axe effects unit as well. Used em for a while and sold em cause I keep going back to my old Digitech 2120 rack mount guitar processer which I might add has 2 12ax7's in the pre amp section of the unit. My last purchase a couple years ago was the Roland GR55 with a Godin XTSA Koa Top guitar to run it. Great piece of kit! I have enough sounds to keep me happy for the next 25 years if I make it that far! lol. And my 1984 JCM 800 with a 4x12 cab with jimmy Marshall greenbacks will never leave my person! Been watching your vids for years and have bought stuff you reviewed including the EVH iii 50 watt head. TC

This one got me digging out my old Pod 2.0 , plugged it into my Fender blues deluxe and remembered why l had put it ( the Pod :) in the cupboard. Have recently bought an AER Alpha 40 acoustic Amp and thought nothing ventured so tried it through the front end. Could not believe how good it sounded. Very usable and though l might still end up getting some form of modeller at some point, l won't be rushing that decision as l very quickly found that l only really need 3 maybe 4 good tones which the Pod & Alpha deliver and as the Captain says can be dialled up in jig time.

The original POD and POD 2.0 were much better than everything Line 6 released after them. Bought a PODxt after using the 2.0 for years and was shocked how fizzy the xt sounded. And every Line 6 product kept having that annoying fizz. Don‘t know why. But the original POD is still a great product.
@AE-hx7wy
@AE-hx7wy 5 жыл бұрын
Kinda funny, artist King Diamond said the same, lol. I only tried a orginal pod or was it 2.0 once or twice, then i got the xt. Thought it sounded like shit. Simply cause i didn't know how to tweak it. These days i think the pod still sounds amazing. Double or quad track the right combination of sounds and it can sound really really good. There's a lot of shit talk on products. The same people probably couldn't make a real amp sound good on a record, and there's usually the problem. You have know or "learn" what a good sound is. Once you get a grasp of that, you use the built in graphic EQ of the XT and just take those frequences out and there you go. Good tone.

For those who are wondering "oh I like the POD best"......I have Two Plexis - 50 watt amps, a Katana head and a AX8, when I have to go to a small event, I always go with my old POD, older version than this one. Never has let me down, it has an organic sound, no latency, sure it's not the best sound, but it's got something special that makes you play confortable and inspiring. I never use the POD effects they are not very good and can make the sound digital. You can also bypass the cab and use another cabsim that sure will improve the sound if you have a good IRs. I have tried many new stuff as POd HD, Fender Mustang, Tech 21, AMT, and many others, and I always return to my old POD., and Yes!, Kemper should profile the POD. .... LOL

After watching this video, I scored a POD 2.0 for $40. I am a 20+ year bedroom rocker and have owned the Headrush, Bias Amp, Axe FX, Mooer GE200 & 300, H&K Blackspirit, Line 6 POD HD, Helix, ect. You get the idea. Honestly, I was surprised how much like the POD. It was a lot of fun. Does it sound better? Not at all. It's 20 years old and NO it does not sound exactly like the amps it's modeling. But, the Cap said it best, EASE OF USE! This is something that all these companies really need to get back to when designing for players. It took me 1 - 2 minutes to find the tone I was looking for and just start playing. Not 10 - 15 minutes of bank diving and clicking per tone. I've only got a limited amount of play time each day. There is something to be said about simplicity. And honestly, for 20 years old, the tones were fun and not that bad. Pretty good variety too. So I got a solid few hours of playing in, instead of lots of tweaking and then limited playing. That's what is should be, making playing more fun and enjoyable. It made me want to keep playing.

give me a definition of "the sound of the kemper" please :D i mean i made sooo many profiles of my own amps that are completely different, there are often more or less of the "kemperflavour" but other then that the quality of the profiles are soooo different ... i made more then 800 profiles and ther is still no alternative to it imo ... i mean i profiled all amps of the axe fx and the helix too sooo yeah ... i love kemper because they don't rip you off by saying "this is the best sounding device" and two years later they bring out a new one and say " no the old one is shit THIS is the best one" the ultra long product lifespan is just sooo awesome, i simply will never go back to products with fixed built in tones ... i love the Bias amp idea too! btw. ...

I can't believe you mentioned the Digitech RP-1. Over the last year, I put all my multi-fx gear in the same room, ran them all through a mixer, a power amp and cabs to compare them. For a good lead distortion tone, my old RP-1 beat the rest of them hands down. (Yeah, I was shocked too) Maybe there's something to be said about offering an effect called "distortion" instead of trying to model every amp in your favorite rockstar's basement. The RP-1 had a distortion effect that was simply "on" or "off" had a gain control (called "balls") and came in four flavors - I think they were "overdrive" "distorted tube" "Heavy sustain" and ... " " I can't remember the last one. That with a compressor and a 7 band EQ gave me a lot of possibilities and allowed me to get all the sounds I needed for my cover band gig. The other multi fxs in the room? Digitech GSP 2101, Roland GP-100, BOSS SE-70, Line6 PodHD500, BOSS GT-8 Rocktron PROGAP Ultra, Rocktron Chameleon, D V Mark Multiamp

The thing I realized with the models is not to even pay attention to what they are calling the patch. Listen to each while you're playing, when you find that one that makes you pee a little in your shorts, then you know you have your sound. Then read it to know which one it is so you can get back to it. Because if you just go by the patch name, your affirmation bias will always screw you.

Thank you for this comparison, I am in shock, it was eyes opener for me. It showed how little we moved in 20 years in amp modeling. POD sounded better to me on clean and crunch sounds, it lost to Kemper only on high gain sounds. Also POD's reverb was pretty poor sounding so I wonder how much better it would be if I ran something like Strymon Blue Sky after it. Atomic Amplifier came out really pale in this comparison. I owned it and I sold it, it sounded same for ma as in this video, I was not able to dial any sound that I would really like. I even purchased Mike Britt IRs and although it was little better, still not what I wanted to hear, I prefer the sound of my Yamaha THR10. Mike Britt also fooled me because in his video with Amplifier he had it hooked to Atomic CLR sets the standard for Full Range Flat Response monitor and had a microphone in the room and it added dimension and impression that it sounded really good. When I hooked it to my mixer it did not sound that good on my PA system. Right now for practicing at home I am using Yamaha THR10 which I still like very much (check how it can sound just form the headphones out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rL2aiLmCx66wnoE.html). For my gig playing when I cannot use amp I purchased Zoom G3Xn which I didn't like at first, but then one video on youtube somehow showed me how to program it and it was a game changer for me, I was able to program 4 basic sounds that I need: clean, ambient, crunch, and lead and for now I am happy camper. But I am going to save money and buy Fractal AX8, I believe it is still the best modeler on the market. People say it sounds and feels like a real amp. So for all gigs with in-ear monitors it will be the best solution. In January at the NAMM 2018 I played Kemper which was OK but for some reason I did not connect with. Also at the NAMM 2018 I played new Boss GT-1000 and I cannot give honest opinion because I tried it with headphones and all the factory patches were full of effects that I would not use, so I will watch demos on youtube, they just started shipping it so we should see more demos very soon. One thing that I liked was the new AIRD (Augmented Impulse Response Dynamics) technology, it allowed with guitar volume play like with real tube amp from clean to crunch to almost lead. But POD 2.0 for $40 is a worthy grab so I will keep my eyes open...

As expected, the Kemper takes the day for the truest "amp in the room" sound. The sound reproduction was NOT very good in this demo, but we have to take it as it is. The POD held its ground quite well in most instances. In fairness, the AmpliFire CAN sound pretty good (i have one) ..... it's the most finicky regarding presets though ... i.e., it can necessarily take more effort to arrive at a sound one may want to use. Also, i personally think the AmpliFire was designed to be at its best in a DI setup ..... in an open-air environment, this unit i feel is more dependent on one's backline ..... i.e., what brand of power amp/cab, or FRFR.

I bought a Line 6 POD 2.0 when it first came out, and that's what I still use. There's a bit of personal preference here between the POD and Kemper. If you really don't want it to sound any different from the amp you're modeling, go with Kemper. But I personally love how the POD sounds. Though I only use it for a clean amp sound and use 9 effect pedals, so, I don't need a lot from my amp.

Small nitpic. Kemper is not a modelling amp, its a profiling amp. It basically means that each preset is a copy of one particular sound on an amp. It doesn't try to model the controls of said amp, just a sound you dialed at the time of profiling. So if you mess with the gain and eq too much, then of course it will deviate from the initial sound you profiled and probably start to sound less and less like the amp you're comparing it to. So this means that a) Something like an Axe Fx would be better suited to take the place of the Kemper in this video and b) The AC30 tone was probably messed up as soon as you started to fiddle with the gain knob. That being said great video! I'm an engineer and I wanted a solution for tracking bands live in the studio without having to use amplifiers (guitars and bass would be DI'ed and then reamped latter) and I was looking for something cheap just to feed the players through the monitors. Hearing Brad Wood actually uses the Bass POD in a lot of his mixes and now this video showing that the guitar one also doesn't sound too bad kinda sealed the deal. I'm getting two POD's and a Bass POD! Of to Ebay!
