About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

Glenn, when you started figuring out how far $22 an hour goes in Nashville you became my hero. People don’t take the time to do this kind of math. I used to own a company that made products for guitar players. My partner and I had very strong arguments over hiring people and how much they should be paid. Your logic in working out rent, living costs, transportation costs, etc. is undeniable. My partner would explain how much money that would take out of our pockets and I said that if we can’t afford to pay a livable wage we do not deserve to be in business. Being in business is not a right. Is a privilege given to us through a business license issued by the people. If we can’t support those people, then we do not deserve that license. We all walk around with these super computers in our pockets and the fact that everybody doesn’t understand this basic truth blows my fucking mind.

I don't really get the point about the Kemper getting obsolete because "it's computer technology". Who cares? It's a box, you plug in a guitar, a great variety of good guitar sounds come out. As long as it does that, it will be useful, and it doesn't matter what's in the box - a tube amp, a transistor amp, a computer or an automated kabbalah processor.

The thing about the Kemper is that it used to be the best at what it does, 12 years ago. Technology has evolved, and the competition has gotten better. Does that mean the Kemper isn't good? No. It is good. If you own it, it makes little sense to replace it. But other units are just as good or better now, and also cheaper. So it makes little sense to buy a new Kemper. It just seems like there is a group of people who desperately want the Kemper to still be considered the best. Maybe because they always need to have the best and now feel threatened by all the other amazing gear.

@@mrcoatsworth429it's more like Glenn is on some weird trip trying to diss the Kemper in every video - like in this one it's more clickbait video title/thumbnail crap and him saying it's obsolete or whatever. It started with the Tone-X.. and I don't think any Kemper owner is saying other gear can't sound good doing amp distortion these days. It's really put me off his channel to be honest The fact is the Kemper is _always_ going to sound good for guitar music, it's been proving that it sounds good for over a decade. It isn't a 12 year old laptop that is struggling to keep up with the latest apps - that analogy he uses is stupid The only way it will actually become pointless is if we somehow find a new sound that 99% of people all agree is definitively BETTER than the old distorted guitar sounds we had.. and losing all sense of nostalgia we ALL decide to switch everything to this magical new sound. At that point, yeah, if the Kemper isn't updated to support this new magical guitar sound.. then it'll be outdated

To follow up on the rent situation making $22/hr, apartments in the US these days typically have you setting up and paying for utilities yourself, so those bills are also a pretty major factor in your cost of living in addition to your rent. Nashville also gets quite hot & humid in the summer and snows in the winter, so your electric bill's gonna run up a lot during those extreme seasons. Many landlords are also requiring people make 3× rent in gross income just to be approved these days too, so this is also just generously assuming the tenant gets approved after paying the asinine non-refundable application fees. And to make matters even worse, let's say you wanted to buy a house with that $22/hr job. Well, tough shit, income needed to afford a median cost home in Nashville is $124,095 per year, or just under $60/hr.

Hi Glenn 👋 I had the pleasure to be a “fly on the wall” for a session with John Webster and he brought his personal Kemper. I was amazed by the guitar tone he had and in between takes I ask him wat he was using. He told me straight up : Kemper, this one has the profile of all the real amp you heard on all the massive record, I profited my one amps, Bob Rock’s amp and CLA send me some and other guys too… If I’m correct, the Kemper profile capture the full signal chain, Amp, Speakers, pre and mic blend. It’s a proof that “ tone is in the signal chain “ ( and the speakers are a big part of it ) All that to say that even if the Kemper is obviously going to be obsolete one day. It’s still capture a lot and make it so easy to get good results. PS : I do not own a Kemper and probably never will. I’m fine with my Pod Go.

I'm a guitarist that is very cautious about using digital modeling software. Not because I don't think it sounds good, but because of planned obsolescence. I'd like to take that leap, but to spend that kind of money knowing I'll have to purchase it again someday gives me pause. Having said that, Glenn is a fucking liar when it comes to his take between the Tonex and the Kemper. The Tonex is not a one for one replacement, but he makes it sound that way. He keeps saying that people who bought a Kemper wasted their money, or got ripped off, but in order to get a Tonex to do what a Kemper does, you have to sink a lot of money in it. First of all, you have to buy 2 Tonexes because a single Tonex cannot do stereo. That's $800. Now you need effects, and depending on what you want can cost from $300 to $500. Now we're at $1100. For a live guitarist, they now need a pedal board big enough to house 2 Tonex units, and an effects processor which will take up a lot of floor space. That can be a minimal cost if you build your own, or it could cost up to to $200 to accommodate all of that. So basically, for a brand new Kemper vs brand new Tonex with full Kemper capabilities it's a savings of about $400 to use the Tonex, albeit with a few extra steps. But if you would rather have the capabilities of a Kemper in one unit, you can pick up a used Kemper for about $1100, and no extra steps. Having said all that, if all a person wants is to profile amps, then the Tonex is a no brainer. It's definitely the lowest cost profiler on the market right now, but if someone wants a full rig for live use with stereo effects and have it footswitchable, then the Tonex has some competition.

@@travisspaulding2222 as far as digital gear and planned obsolescence goes, who says you HAVE to buy the new one when it comes out? If you still enjoy the sound of your 20 year old modeler, you can keep playing it as long as you want. Provided the components don’t wear out.

@@guitarsbunch347Amps will always be repairable. I'm not an amp snob. I use software for practicing and recording, and I love it. But let me know when you find a 40 year old modeling unit that is still going strong. I have a 5150 that's 40 years old, and compared to replacing modelers, I don't have nearly as much money invested in it. Yeah, occasionally you have to replace tubes and re cap them, the occasional resolder of some components, but that cost isn't nearly as high as buying a Kemper or a Helix, and then 20 years later having to buy another one. The only time it's not really worth it to fix an amp is if one of the transformers go on it, which is rare, and usually due to misuse.

A counter point to "no one cares about the piece of paper". Here at least (I'm in the UK) a lot of recruitment is done via HR departments, and they always stipulate the need for applicants to have a degree. It doesn't matter the job, frequently the job doesn't even come close to needing one, but they see a degree as some kind of 'gold standard' that must be met. Someone could have 30 years of experience and in many industries at this point it will be ignored due to a lack of a piece of paper! The managers that need the employee would normally prefer the experience every time, but they're simply not given the option, any applicants without degrees are filtered out by HR before they get as far as the manager.

Truth be told the profile anyone makes of an amp on their Kemper is going to sound like 99.9% of the original amp, so in that regard, the Kemper as a piece of electronic hardware is never going to be obsolete. The fact that 10 years later there are cheaper alternatives doesn't change the fact that Kemper is an industry standard in music production, live shows etc...

Thing about Kemper's is that they were cutting edge when they came out and if you were a professional musician it was a justifiable investment at least and realistically a great investment. If you bought one when it came out - and the few years after - and used it to make your job easier then that is fantastic. These days there are other options, better options and cheaper options we all know but if you were an early Kemper adopter before these options came out nobody is calling you an idiot for still using it now, they're saying you're an idiot if you buy one now. It's like phones. My phone is five years old and cost £600. If I paid £600 for a new one now I'm an idiot, but I know technology has moved on and got cheaper.

But if the Kemper crapped out I wouldn’t buy another, unless they come out with a newer, cheaper version. Modelling and profiling technology is constantly evolving so there’s always going to be something newer, better or cheaper. Doesn’t mean that the piece of gear you own is suddenly crap, or obsolete. It’s just not the latest thing anymore. 🤘

I bought a couple of the direct boxes in the last year. They 'work'. For gigs and most rehearsals, I still go with my solid tube amps. Even my huge, heavy 5150ii sounds better quiet (even at 1.5) than these boxes. You don't actually save anything for volume or much weight (need a speaker) until the drummer stops the acoustic kit. I think most players that go direct simply don't own a great amp.

First off, the idea of measurable and testable for differences in sound should be, IMHO, the backbone of sound exploration. It's one of the best ways to detect "snake oil" from manufacturers. What I think would be great to see, with analysis, is the difference in sound results from differing string tensions and string gauges.. Maybe even throw in how much fret/string height makes a difference in sound results if it does? Lastly, when you said some gods weren't exactly nice....it made me think of the Spanish Inquisition in History of the World Part 1, hahaha. Take care and thanks for everything.

Regarding metal pickup covers… that’s physics. A conductor (the metal cover) in the presence of a magnetic field creates eddy currents on the surface of the cover. These currents produce their own magnetic field that opposes the pickup’s magnet. This has the effect of lowering the resonant peak in frequency and amplitude slightly. Depending on the thickness and material the cover is made from it can be a drastic difference. Bill Lawrence wrote about this. This is why Filter’Trons and some DeArmond pickups have slots cut in the covers. This breaks up the eddy currents. Players started removing covers from Gibson humbuckers back in the 70s for a reason. They sounded brighter without the covers.

It makes sense that his equipment is the best because he owns patents and he invented technologies and intellectual property that everyone else uses. Kemper does sound amazing. I started in live audio, but I soon found that EVERYONE does audio, so I had to learn lighting and rigging, just so I could get work on shows I normally wouldn't as an audio-only stagehand. Unfortunately, the work destroyed my body, and I had to stop working in that industry before it killed me. Luckily, the chaotic, ever-changing environment that live productions gave me every day set me up with strong problem-solving and collaboration skills that are applicable in almost any industry. And so, ten years later, I don't have much issue anymore finding an employer who actually compensates their talent fairly (myself included).

It will likely be quite awhile before the Kemper is obsolete. Remember, 'obsolete' doesn't mean that it's been surpassed by new technology. It means that new tech has rendered it useless. The funny thing is that vacuum tube amplification is much closer to being obsolete. It's become mostly a niche/enthusiast thing now, especially in the hi-fi world. And in the lo-fi world, profiling/modeling setups can replicate their sound with very little perceivable difference, especially in a mix.

Or they might not notice the level of humanity. In my rework of Metallica's album St. Anger, I used program drums, but I tried to make them sound natural, and I didn't really edit the guitars and bass. The tracks are made up of a few long takes each, and I didn't play super tight intentionally. I still get comments saying I sucked the life out of it and it sounds like every other metal record these days. 😂

i would say that to the people who say its in the guitar pickups and not the speakers, put on some headphones run your guitar amp through a di box and then load some inpulse responses and record it then listen back to it and see, hey it actually does chance the sound of your guitar tone, i did that with my valeton gp 200 with their version of an engel invader 2 amp and it has worked wonders for me, esspecally since i record and play in an appartment where i can't really mic up a real cabinet, so yeah you don't need a gibson guitar to make great metal music just some good speakers a amp with great distortion and some fucking knowlegde so glen keep up the good work

Yeah…the recording school thing; while on tour we played a college where the senior sound engineering students spent an hour “pink noising” the room with all state of the art gear and our sound was garbage that night. Worked with another guy who made odd sounds in the mikes to hear the frequencies, was done in 15 minutes using just his great ears, and our sound was always excellent (oh, and no sound engineering degree, of course). 🎶

Glenn I cannot argue about the importance of a speaker and the sound in the mix. However I can say as a guitarist, a bassist, a vocalist, and a drummer that as much as sticks count toward the sound of a drummer, it seems to me to be similar for pickups to a guitarist. I don't think pickups make the biggest difference, but I do believe it makes a difference to the way a guitarist may or may not accentuate the way that they make their sound. I guess what I'm trying to say is what a musician plays with may accentuate the way that they use their techniques, resulting in a different sound from player to player. But I have been wrong in the past. Love your show.

You know, a blind test on active pickups would be interesting, as they are the one type of pickup I'd expect to hear a big difference in since they contain a preamp that can boost and cut different frequencies.

I live in Nashville. Traffic and Public Transit sucks. And if you are late to Gibson because of public transportation or traffic, you get written up. But yes, rent has gone through the roof due to Californians moving here and inflating the real estate market with lots of cash, pushing locals out of the housing market. $22 is about a fast food wages when you adjust for cost of living.

About your tutorial videos not getting traction: I wonder how many people are like me. I usually watch the first 5 or so minutes of your tutorials, but rarely watch the whole thing. I am not an engineer, and am not willing to put in the time to learn the skill set. OTOH, I watch and some times re-watch your test videos (tubes, tone wood, speakers) and most of the other videos as there is good information for the "punters" like me. I came for the "stupid musician texts" and stayed for the more scientific videos. Good blend of humor and facts with a bit of Crom's balls added in. Hello Glenn You always mention how important the speakers are for the sound. Now you can use different IR's with the profiles on the Kemper. I also use the Kemper Box with the Kone speaker for the Kemper. If I change an IR now, the sound changes sometimes more, sometimes less. Unfortunately, I don't have any other boxes around to compare directly. I'm now asking myself, how big is the difference between IRs and "real" speakers? Or are the IRs so good these days that you can no longer hear the difference? What is your opinion? Greetings from switzerland.

I agree with the whole pay thing. Greed sucks. Rent went up so far in Dallas that owning a house is more bang for your buck, and my mortgage is still one of my paychecks. My kids rent apartments and they need to get like 4 - 6 roommates just so they can make rent. 14 years ago I was paying $550 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment. Same apartment today costs over 3x the amount. The problem however isn't Gibson being cheap, it's everyone else being so freakin greedy.

Been watching your show for a little while now, and I've been building guitars. The first 2 I built both have the Seymour Duncan Nazgul/Sentient combo, and both sound great. They do sound different when there's no distortion, not by much. And yes, with distortion there's literally no difference. After those first 2, I took a "risk" and bought a pair of "cheap" $25 pickups (for the pair) from Ali to create an Aldo Nova inspired semi-hollow Les Paul that stays in tune. I know, right? The clean tones on the neck are way better than the SD's. This makes the middle position sound better, and it's not like the bridge pickup is very different. And again when you put the distortion on, all those differences have all but vanished. I figured all that out before I started watching your show. For years before a drummer I know was insistent that you NEED either EMG's or SD's to sound good. When I first hooked up that new LP to my system and heard with my own ears a beautiful sounding beast, I was convinced that this idea of having to spend a fuck ton of money on pickups was ridiculous. That's about where I found your channel. So congratulations, you have one follower that had brains enough to try something out, and reach the same conclusions you have without having heard you beforehand. You've helped me to get to far more helpful hints and tricks, but for me it started with hearing you say the thing I already knew. Thanks for all the advice, you've probably saved me a couple thousand since.

4:17 I used to record that way. Not because I wanted to, but because I don’t have an instrument mic and I don’t know how to mic up a speaker cabinet. This was like 10 years ago before Glen went viral. Not only did it not sound that great, I also had to boost the living hell out of it because the signal going into the DAW wasn’t loud enough. Now if I ever do any home recording I can just go through my preamp pedal so I won’t need to mic anything.

Recently there's been a chain of huge Linux audio software releases, like Studio One beta (which I am actively testing now, and while it's still pretty raw, it's very very promising), Audio Assault's AmpLocker, and some other stuff like vendor sponsored extended drivers (with routing etc) for the new generation of Focusrite audio interfaces. Yes, we Linux bass players have a Darkglass emulation by Audio Assault, but we also want more options, and we're the audience that's less prone to piracy than literally any other OS's user base. I'd definitely pay a non-discounted price for any of your plugins.
