Ken Squier always described racing as common people doing uncommon deeds, but it was his dulcet tones and indelible descriptions that ensured NASCAR's best moments were remembered with reverence. #NBCSports #NASCAR #KenSquier

This is brutal. I often thought many, many times about Ken and how I missed him on TV. I have to give NBC Sports many thanks for bringing Ken back to call a segment of racing on throwback weekend. In my opinion, Ken was the best to ever do motorsports. God Bless Ken and his family.

The voice that this man as a young boy listened to while doing farm chores, helped me fall in love with a sport that I still love today. Kens approach to the race will never be matched. That iconic voice that many of us love to hear. It sucks when an icon is lost. The nascar community is deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I think I can speak for many when I say” ken squire was the voice of nascar”

One thing about Ken Squier is that he was NASCAR's Sid Collins. He began his pilgrimage to becoming one of the main voices of NASCAR at a time when Sid Collins was at his prime, and much as Collins helped spearhead the way the Indianapolis 500 was covered in the 29 years he did the race, first for Mutual and then the IMS Radio Network, including the first live flag-to-flag coverage of the Indianapolis 500 in 1953, Squier did the same for NASCAR and the Daytona 500, first with MRN in 1970 (I believe their first race was the 1970 Daytona 500), and then with CBS, spearheaded by that fateful meeting in May of 1978 that wound up bringing the Daytona 500 to CBS for flag-to-flag coverage in 1979, the year after CBS had begun the tradition of all-day sports programming to lead into the Super Bowl, which they had done to lead into Super Bowl XII, the first one shown in prime time. With the announcement of Squier's death, virtually of of the voices that helped bring NASCAR to it's peak of popularity are now gone. Jim McKay, Bill Flemming, Keith Jackson, Chris Economaki, Bob Jenkins, Larry Nuber, Benny Parsons, Barney Hall, Brock Yates, and now Squier. As far as I know, only Ned Jarrett, Jackie Stewart, and David Hobbs are left, and Jarrett's 91 and Stewart, who's 84, had a stroke earlier this year. As I mentioned, Squier was NASCAR's Sid Collins, and Squier's on-air eulogy for Dale Earnhardt, Sr. on FOX Sports was for TV viewers in 2001 what Collins' eulogy for Eddie Sachs after Sachs had been pronounced dead during the stoppage after the crash that killed both he and Dave MacDonald early in the 1964 Indianapolis 500 was for the millions listening to that race on the radio was at the time.

He quoted Jim Shepherd (I think) in the 98 Daytona 500 saying: if horse racing is the sport of kings, auto racing - this dangerous and sometimes brutal game - is the sport of friends. Today, Nascar lost one of it's greatest friends and it's most impactful ambassador
