I visited a Filipino water village in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
My Kota Kinabalu first impressions video ➡️ • 28 Minutes Flight To K...
While walking around the oceanfront here in Kota Kinabalu I spotted some island nearby. I didn't really know what to expect there so I started to ask around for possible boat rides over there. Little did I know that i will end up visiting a Filipino water village on one of these islands. What a cool and unique experience here in Sabah Malaysia!

I know there are some tensions at the moment, but my channel is not about politics and I don't want to get involed in any political discussion here. To all claimer pinoi here read this first before claim sabah is PH 👍 the real owner of sabah is sultan brunei give it to sultan sulu n that time sabah is known as sulu muslim state not PH or MALAYSIA yet, after 1963 sabah join malaya n reject PH now became malaysia, malaysia keep continue give rm5300 to sulu heirs as annual cession for disputed state (NOT RENTAL) n their have promise for sulu to not disturbe sabah..in 2013 sultan sulu army jamalul kiram III attack sabah n malaysia gov stop give rm5300 to them bec their already violate the term their promise, in 2022 sulu heirs win in french court bec of false letter use by enemy of najib razak thomy thomas to them..now my new gov already take action about thomy thomas mistake n will fight back with all prove we have n the change to win is HIGH. we will get back all 2 asset seize by sulu heirs soon n charge PH with criminal attack for what happen in 2013 😎 just wait

Ken, to clarify, these are Badjao people, a seafaring nomadic group originating from the Philippines. Historically, Badjao traveled and traded between islands regardless of national boundaries. Many have now settled in permanent settlements. So while they are Filipino by heritage, they have lived in Malaysia for generations. Badjao settlements are spread across the Southern Philippines and Malaysia.

You are so smart that you didn't join the tour group, the price really makes a difference! It turns out that the boatman is also a Filipino, what an unexpected turn of events, and even more unexpected is that he actually brought you home! For a few seconds I thought it wasn't you who went there to visit, but to be visited by the locals, haha! Thanks for taking us to visit that cool sea village, great job! 👍😃🙌

Just a little background and context: 1. Ethnically they are known as Bajau Laut. They are two types of Bajau. One is known as Bajau Darat which means Land Bajau. Many Land Bajau lives in town like Kota Belud in Sabah. Another type is Bajau Laut or Sea Bajau. The kampung you have visited is populated by Bajau Laut. 2. You can find ethnic Bajau not only in Malaysia but also in neighbouring countries like Indonesia, Brunei and Phillipines. 3. I believe most of them in the island that you have visited already received Malaysian identity card or I/C which makes them Malaysian citizen. 4. Before borders were marked by modern nation-states, Bajau Laut have been living scatteredly for hundreds of years around the islands in the vast Sulu Seas which are currently shared by modern states of Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. 5. Many of them are previously refugees from Southern Philippines islands who are escaping the separatist war waged by separatist groups like MNLF, MILF, Abu Sayyaf and other separatist groups in Southern Philippines during the intense battle with Philippines Armed Forces in the 1970s. 6. The war in Southern Philippines creates a lot of suffering and displacement among the Bajau Laut in the Philippines territory and hundreds of thousands of them find solace in Sabah Malaysia. 7. Later on in the 1980s, there's a very controversial operation named "Project I/C" where Malaysian government during that time granted citizenship to those refugees through the conferment of I/C (Malaysian Identity Card). 8. This controversial "Project I/C" until now become one of the most sore point in Sabah politics and affect the ethnic relationship between Sabahan Muslim natives and Sabahan non-Muslim natives because before that Sabah like Sarawak is a non-Muslim majority state but after "Project I/C" it changes the demography of Sabah where the Muslim now becomes the majority in Sabah. That's a little bit of background and context. Sabah is a very complex state in Malaysia. And currently there are between 500,000 to one million people who are considered as stateless i.e. without any citizenship in Sabah. Neither Malaysia nor Philippines accept them as their citizens. A very complex and delicate situation.

Remember the Kampung Tanduo uprising in 2013... it's also those Project IC beneficiaries who were granted citizenship in Malaysia that rose and rebel against the Malaysian government trying to stake claim on Sabah. Total of 235 of traitors. Some six or eight Malaysian policemen died tragically where their bodies were found to have been sadistically tortured. The Phillipines had to beg Malaysia to continue uphold the rights of those Malaysian citizens of Filipino descent after this terrorist act. So the point is, statelessness in Sabah will continue because of the acts of those few Malaysians of Filipinos descent who wage war against Malaysia and and her people.

@@kimsohye4801 I don't understand "pilipin aka pilak aa" in your comment. But I have a guess you are telling that Filipino in sabah ask for money and spit on you if you don't give? If so, that is basically how "Badjao" a native tribe in the Philippines, act when you don't give to them. Even Filipinos living in any cities here in the Philippines experience the same thing from those tribe. I think that is their cultural behavior. And for modern people like us, that is unhygienic and illmannered. I also heard that not all Badjao in Sabah act like that. Specially those who are exposed or grown up to modern society.

I love Sabah. Older people there can speak Tagalog fluently. There are lots of of Filipinos living in Sabah and still a proud Pinoy .. I remember I encounter one lady and ask me if I am a Filipino and I said yes, then she turned to be emotional, and told me that her parents we're Filipinos and I can see that she is confused about her identity as a second generation living in Sabah... She's so happy to meet me at that time, as if I am her long lost brother..

Filipinos are always very hospitable..And Yes they are Filipinos and they live in Sabah. Northern Sabah is owned by Sulu Sultanate. Proven and Justified! The Badjao / Bajau tribe is an indigenous population whose culture and livelihood are tied to the sea. Also widely known as the “Sea Gypsies” of the Sulu and Celebes Seas, the Badjao are scattered along the coastal areas of Tawi Tawi, Sulu, Basilan, and some coastal areas of Zamboanga City.

Careful next time when island hopping in Sabah and it’s Isles, some cases of Moros pirate kidnapping tourists and foreigners have been known to occur. It’s not really likely to happen in KK but if you visit some smaller towns in Sabah which are nearby to even more “adventurous or exotic” islands, it’s a very real possibility if you’re going solo without a travel company, especially now with renewed tension between Sabah and Philippines’ claim. If you’re wondering about why the Filipino Moros/sea tribes have ICs in Sabah, it’s a pretty interesting but very sensitive issue. The short story is, the long ruling party in Malaysia and specifically in Sabah, BN & UMNO, issued identity cards to them to secure more votes in order to stay in power in the state, without really making any efforts to naturalise or develop their communities. Allegedly various other parties copied the same strategy and these parties have been doing so for decades, causing an influx of newly “naturalised” illegal migrants numbering in up to a million (maybe more). Personally, I found it a really reckless and heinous political act, as it’s a lose-lose. The migrants don’t get naturalised and developed properly or systematically thus causing them to be subjected to ghettoisation and remain poor. Meanwhile, native Sabahans start to develop a xenophobic view and see them as a burden or nuisance that they have to economically support. (A lot of eerie parallels to what’s happening in West Europe these past few years, I know). The rabbit hole goes much deeper and I really recommend reading into it more further. You can start with the Wikipedia article for “Project IC”. Some publications claim the move was to increase the ratio of Muslims in Sabah, others theorise that it was to destabilise and distract the demographic of Sabah so that more revenues from the oil-rich state can be funnelled into Peninsular Malaysia and some Sabahan politician‘s pockets without using the money to develop Sabah. I hope this issue gets resolved eventually. And I hope this doesn’t discourage you from ever visiting Sabah again. It’s a wonderful state, diverse in every way, it’s population, flora and fauna, all truly diverse. I still feel like from your Sabah vids, you’ve only seen about less than 10-15% of what Sabah has to offer. It’s a great place but yeah this issue has been the biggest blemish of the state.

Spot on. Thats a Political game or tactic used… that made the majority of the Sabahans to agreed to be part of Malaysia and I think also becoz they are pressured on the ongoing war and dispute b/ween Sulu Muslim tribe/group and Malaysia gov. way back on the news so Sabah people just ceded in order not to be trapped in the middle of that dispute… But somehow as we can see Sabah under Malaysia still looks poverty stricken and no improvements at all

Ken they're Filipino who maybe stayed or growned up in Sabah. He said he speak Badiao and that is one of many Filipino tribes of southern Philippines. North Sabah owned by the Sultan of Sulu of Philippines until late 1800 when it was leased to a British company and in 1963 country of Malaysia was created and that the British company who leased Sabah from the Sultan of Sulu simply passed it on to Malaysia. Malaysian government treat them as undocumented aliens but they are the descendants of the Sultan of Sulu. The Badjiaos tribe were the water people the Philippines who lived in their boats full time in the past. At present most of them live in a stilt homes like what you see in Sabah.

Hi Ken! In Bajau language or Sinama, thank you is "magsukul". Many languages and native ethnic groups exist in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia, countries in Southeast Asia aren't culturally homogenous like in Germany in which the only main native ethnic group is German (although its multicultural, those groups like Filipino Germans or Turkish Germans originated from migrant communities who settled there, or from minorities in border areas) :) There are very many different ethnic groups and they all have the citizenry of Filipno, Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai etc :) Usually the language of the economically dominant group becomes the 'official language', but everyone speaks their own languages and has their own cultures. Bajau people in Sabah speak Bajau language (also called Sinama or Samal), Bahasa Sug (Tausug language), and Malay :) They rarely speak English. In the Philippines, the Bajau/Sama speak their native Bajau/Sinama, Bisaya, Bahasa Sug, Malay, Tagalog ('Filipino') and some English. In Indonesia, the Bajau speak their native Bajau, Indonesian/Malay and the other local languages from other tribes in Indonesia.

Indeed you are a bit fortunate that you we're able to find a boatman unexpectedly a Filipino. At first the boatman is hesitant to divuldge his nationality due to their current living status perhaps but eventually true Filipino can't be hide. From being hospitable and humility which is the common traits of a Filipino, that made your tour a worthwhile journey. This is the first time I saw the village and quite surprise there is school so a little relief that the children get some proper education. Thanks for sharing your video and looking forward for your more reality videos.
