Xinjiang, Uyghur Autonomous Region - China's most controversial area
Urumqi, Xinjiang China - I traveled to the far west of China to visit the Uyghur Autonomous Region. This region is all over western media for not so good reasons. But as usual, I am curious to see things with my own eyes. So, i booked a flight to Urumqi, which is the capital of the Xinjiang province in west China. This is by the way also the biggest province in China. According to some comments on my channel, I would not even be allowed to enter, as the region is apparently closed for foreigners. Well, I was able to enter without any problems and soon after I found myself exploring the city center of Urumqi. It was freezing cold there though: Around -20 °C (-4 °F). Join me as we explore around to get to know this region of China, meet local Ughyur Muslims, try local food and see what Xinjiang, China is really like!

As a Chinese Muslim, I was discriminated against twice:1. An Indonesian once asked me if I was forced by the gov to eat pork😓. 2. A man from Scotland said to me that Chinese mosques are useless. I believe in Allah and I love my country, the gov has NEVER NEVER NEVER banned my faith☪. They even set up “green lanes” for Muslim every Friday in my community. Instead, some foreigners are prejudiced. Now I'm really tired of explaining to foreign friends that there is religious freedom in China.I understand they're just curious, but you know, it's really annoying to answer the same biased questions over and over again. So I hope your video can be seen by more people.

We Chinese Muslims have more privileges than Chinese Han people due to our minority status and cultural background. There are Hui Chinese living in Xinjiang too. I visited Xinjiang in 1991 when I graduated from college to visit fellow college students who studied in my university in Dalian University. Comparing the the western countries China has the best social policies towards minorities especially the Muslims. I am a product and witness of such policies. The United States and the West do not care about the Muslims in Palestine, do not care about their own Muslims, do not care, only care about the Muslims in China, which is nothing more than stirring up national unity within China and inciting internal wars. Creating so-called forced labor is nothing more than besieging the economy of Xinjiang and inciting internal strife. Some information about the video: 1:30 The girls at the security check talked in Uyghur to each other, but in Chinese to the translator app. 3:20 The traditional Uyghur script is based on the Perso-Arabic script, a.k.a. the Persian script, so it does look like Arabic. Some Latin-based and Cyrillic-based scripts are/were also used to spell the Uyghur language, especially in former USSR countries. 4:15 The girl selling milktea said 'chai', which is the Uyghur word for tea. (Also the same word in many Asian and Slavic languages.) 5:50 That IS a straw. It's designed thin so you don't get hurt when you are drinking hot liquid. 7:00 You are right, the bread is indeed naan, the same type of food as in other places in Central Asia or South Asia. (Xinjiang is the easternmost part of Central Asia.) It is called nan in Uyghur and nang in Chinese, both from Persian. That's why it is spelled as nang in the English discription there. 10:30 There are many ethnic groups in Xinjiang, not every non-Han Chinese there speaks Uyghur. Or maybe the man speaks Uyghur but cannot read. And he was telling you (through translator app) the snack is cheese made from cow's milk, maybe distinguishing it from sheep milk cheese. 12:57 That building which looks like a mosque IS a mosque. Its name, Erdaoqiao Mosque (دۆڭكۆۋرۈك مەسچىتى or 二道桥清真寺), is written above the main entrance. The place for praying is on the second floor. 26:50 Actually I don't understand Uyghur... But I guess the man was telling you the price for the naan is 6 yuan. The kebab itself is 20 yuan, as he told you in the beginning outside the restaurant. He gave up charging you for the naan since you didn't understand his language. 27:45 Those buns were samosas, the same type of food as in other Central Asian areas. 40:45 The entrance of the mosque is on the left in the yard, with the blue sign saying '清真寺入口' (lit. entrance of the mosque).

And 40:48 clearly shows the name of the mosque in Chinese 汗騰格里清真寺 and in local language. The rolling green display seems to show "今日禮拜時間" (today's worship hours) but the camera moved off too soon.

Hui Chinese here. It's funny that many westerners claim they care about muslims, but if you test them with some very basic facts, you'll find how ignorant they can be about real muslim life and culture, not to mention the truth of muslim life in China. I also an interesting observation about westerners: they love to talk about cultural diversity, but when they encounter it, they usually would say "oh, this is like in another country" as if there can be only one culture and life style in one country. China encourages all ethnic groups to maintain and develop their own cultures. You can also find places in China that is "like in" Russia, Mongolia, Thailand, southeast asia, etc. We are diverse and open. All these cultures can coexist peacefully in China.

Uyghur people actually enjoy some special treaments cuz they are minority(alomost 99% of Chinese are Han ethnics). The Chinese government also has issued policy to help Xinjiang cuz its economy is not as good as the eastern developed provinces . For example, Uyguur students can get extra marks in the College Extrance Exam and easier to be admitted into good universities. Plus the reason why Xinjiang has more police and armed military is that there were terrorists and extremists who were brainwashed killing Han people a few years ago.Now it is definitely a safe place to visit. If you want to know how do the local Xinjiang people think of the military police's existent in the street, please don't be hesitated to ask the local people's opinion about it. Xinjiang is not hell as what western MSM described as. In China, stability, safety, economy and race harmony are the priority of the government. "The bad things that Western colonists accused others of doing were actually done by themselves." China's ethnic minorities have many advantages over the Han people. For example, they can get extra points in the college entrance examination, and some local governments may build houses for free. Regarding of religions and learning mandarin, the policies are the same as Han people's. Normal people have religious freedom except the cpc members. In our compulsory education, everyone learns "Chinese" subject. As for the local culture, it depends on the school curriculum and local Education Bureau arrangement. My hometown, Liaoning Province, is also home to a large number of ethnic minorities. I am also a Manchu. As a Chinese, we seldom pay attention to the issue of nationality, because we never make any difference because a person is Han or Muslim. I believe that basically all Chinese people have heard a song since childhood, which contains the lyrics "56 ethnic groups, 56 flowers, 56 brothers and sisters are a family", This is the true China.

All of your Chinese videos have been eye opening and I believe there is no better KZfaqr to have done a video in this region. I’m very much looking forward to the next instalment. Wishing you safe travels.

I am a Han Chinese from Inner Mongolia, and I went on vacation to Xinjiang Ili last autumn. As a person from Inner Mongolia, I am very picky about the quality of lamb, so I was delighted to have had delicious lamb in Xinjiang that satisfied me greatly. In China, Xinjiang is a very popular tourist destination (when the weather is warm), known for its magnificent natural landscapes. I recommend you to come to Xinjiang again to admire the scenery here in the summer or autumn. Also, you are welcome to consider my hometown Inner Mongolia as your next destination. Inner Mongolia is also a place that has been vilified by Western media. You can come and see for yourself if what they say is true. I recommend you to come in the summer because Inner Mongolia's summers are very cool and comfortable.

Great video Ken. I am a Chinese American. When I was in middle school in Henan province, there were 2-3 hui( Chinese Muslin) school in my city, where the students could learn their culture and language along with Chinese. Also there were students from XiZang province( Tibet). They have to be separated from regular classes because they won’t able to keep up on language ability and science classes. Basically if they wanted, they were guaranteed to go to college without examination. At the mean time, the Han student like me had to work our ass out to get into a good university. But we all understand, those minorities were from underdeveloped province(青海,西藏,云南), we were brothers and we won’t leave anyone behind. Because all of us are called Chinese.

Very interesting video! Thanks for your sharing. As a girl born in southern part of China, I've never been to Xinjiang, for it' s too far away from my hometown and I did not have enough time(maybe after graduation from university I will). From an early childhood we had beautiful essays in our Chineses textbooks about sceneries and traditions of Xinjiang, we learn Xinjiang-style songs and dance(gestures, poses etc.) in our music classes. Actually, there are many popular singers(like Dao Lang) enjoying intergrating into Uyghur communities and writing songs for the local people. These songs are well-known to Chinese no matter the age. In China, almost every little child is fostered and educated to respect and love our members of different peoples in stead of being triggered hostility and hatred.

Interestingly, when many vloggers travel to different places in China, they often express the same sigh as in the video: It feels like this is not the China in their impressions, and this is not typical China. This just illustrates the diversity of Chinese society and culture. China is a multi-ethnic country with 56 ethnic groups. Although Han and Han culture are the mainstay, areas where other ethnic groups live together still retain their own characteristics and culture. For example, the Uyghur culture in Xinjiang, the Mongolian culture in Inner Mongolia, the Korean culture in Jilin, and the Dai culture(A little bit like Thailand) in Yunnan.

There is a joke among high school students in China: Among 56 ethnic groups in China, 55 can get free extra credits in College/High School entrance examinations except Han Chinese people. I think that well represents China’s favorable policy towards minor groups including Uyghur people. In many high schools in Shanghai including mine, there are “Classes of Xinjiang People” 新疆班, which almost completely consists of Uyghur people born and raised in Xinjiang (also includes Kazakhs, Hui, Han etc. in Xinjiang) who have extraordinary academic achievements in their local schools, and are provided the access to probably the best educational resources in China, so that they can contribute to the development of their hometown in the future. The fees are covered entirely by the government. It’s crystal clear that Who really cares about Xinjiang people. Nice video Ken.

Hi Ken, When people talked about Chinese people, culture, music etc. Normally people refer it to Mandarin But there are lots of varieties in China, different ethnicities, culture as well. They are also Chinese As a mandarin, it's even interesting for us to talk, discuss with our different fellows overall China. Personally, I strongly recommend you to go Yunnan,Guizhou or Guangxi provinces. Hope you have safe and wonderful trip in China

@@Byehk2047As a chinese I need to tell you what video shows to us is the truth. Xinjiang is very big, and there are some places where no one lives, because it is a desert and the environment is not suitable for people to live there. So it is a little dangerous for a person who is not familiar with Xinjiang to go to a place outside the city .(because you even cannot see a person lol)I think this is also the reason why Ken chose Urumqi

The first thing we did when we started school was to educate our students about the religious diet of Xinjiang. They come to Shanghai to study for free, stay for free, and eat for free. Almost 100% of Xinjiang people in our school can go to college , while our school as a whole only has about 90% at the highest. As a Han Chinese I really envy the various treatment policies for minorities. (Google Translate)

I'd like to weigh in on the still massive misunderstanding around the police/security presence in Xinjiang, particularly in cities such as Urumqi as shown in the video up there: 1.) The security deployment across Urumqi seems comprehensive, but it should be dissimilar from the cartoonish Orwellian image that Western media would love to paint the situation to be. Also, this higher level security measure is very common across the winter season because they're required to take extreme weather into account and therefore, the police have to actively cooperate and coordinate with the citizens and the relevant public services and agencies e.g. the cleaning service workers who always do their job at clearing the road and street from the excess of snow at every possible corner of the city. Because at certain times and condition, a huge snow plougher would have to drive through the nearby roads around various places of interest e.g. the Urumqi Grand Bazaar during the event of moderate or heavy snowing while sometimes, even smaller pick-up truck may also enter the street inside the Bazaar area because some workers and cops inside are doing their job to clear out the street from snow excesses. I can confirm this because I've watched another channel of foreign travel creator couples doing a double livestream in this corner of the city while in the middle of heavy snowing hours on the same day; 2.) The high level security forces a.k.a. SWAT or "military polices", whatever you want to call them, are typically deployed at specific areas or corners of the city. But they're not everywhere nor are they this picture of scary and intimidating brutes or something like that. They're mostly would just act normal composed to the most average people out there, but they do take precaution on everyone recording something, especially in the proximity to the security checkpoint or office/building. If they come to interfere your activity, then it means they're provoked from your action because they just saw you and thought that you're intentionally recording their presence for unspecified reasons and motive that deserve their scrutiny. This also applies to the more regular police officers types who are doing the aforementioned service duty. So, my takeaway is that you need to learn and understand the local norms and etiquettes as a foreign tourist if you're also a creator making contents for YT. You can still continue to record footages or even a livestream w/out provoking the attention of the law enforcers if you understand the right etiquettes and manners, to put it simply; 3.) Security measure is a necessary because Xinjiang had been a subject to the threat of radicalism and separatism in the past few decades. This is actually a very complex matter, especially wrt the historical background that led to the creation of the separatist group known as Turkistan Islamic Party a.k.a. ETIM. For the sake of brevity, I'll try to keep the explanation simple. The roots of separatism problems in Xinjiang was the Sino-Soviet Split in 1961, when the China-Soviet relation was severely damaged and resulted in economic embargo and political restriction imposed on China by Soviet Union. In response, China later waged its Cultural Revolution as a form of anti-Soviet sentiment itself, among the efforts was to intensify counterprop aimed at the native Xinjiang populace e.g. Uygurs, Kazakh etc., to eliminate perceived Soviet political and socio-cultural influences. In retaliation, Soviet Union ramped up efforts to support and armed dissenting Uygurs and other non-Han ethnicities and revived the former East Turkistan Republic movement, in order to stir political instability in the region by series of border and separatist conflicts for decades. This peaked during the Soviet-Afghan War period when China's foreign policy was aligned closer to the US as they offered conditional support to the Mujahideen. As the result, a considerable numbers of Uygur youth were trained by PLA army and joined force with the Islamist Afghan insurgents. These Uygurs were the seeds that'd grow into the separatist group TIP/ETIM as we know it today, which espouse a distinctive Salafist reinterpretation of Uygur civilizational history and national identity. Hopefully, this helps everyone looking to understand the important context 🙏

For your point #3, I find it interesting how you just call it ‘security measures’. Can you elaborate what that means? If you have no idea, search up China Urumqi ban and try to explain to me how that is justifiable? Banning face veils, beards, Islamic rituals that are basic tenements of the faith, try to justify how that’s fine.
