Kendal Castle. Not just a ruin on a hill

Kendal castle in Cumbra. More than just a ruin on a hill. First built of timber in the 12th century and upgraded in the 13th on a drumlin formed in the last ice age. The castle has commanding views over the lands its Baron's once governed. Once owned by the Parr family whose most famous member was Katherine Parr, the 6th and final wife of the infamous Henry the eighth.

That arch at the south end suggested, to my thinking, that the ground at that entrance used to be a good bit lower. It was a beautiful day when I visited a year ago. Couldn't go to the UK without a stay in my family's namesake town. Frustrating that so much of the castle was dismantled for other uses of the stone. So much of what remains is difficult to imagine now. Thanks for this overview.

Thanks for watching Andrew. You did well to get a beautiful day in England 😆 🌧 🌦 🌂 I guess the moat would be a lot deeper as well if it was dug out to its original level. Many buildings in the UK are built with scavenged parts of Castles and Abbeys etc. Thanks for watching and dropping in a comment

Thanks for watching. There are some very impressive ruins out there, which show how well these castles were built, even though much of the stone has been robbed and reused elsewhere. hi there i lived in kendal in the 70s up till the 90s spent many a drunken sat night up the castle good party place must do a road trip bk up north with my mini4 i also notice they have done some restoration work it was well worse bk in the 70s and no stairs up the tower trying to find old pics i have of it happy flying

They have done a good job of consolidation and the stairs.

Looks like the stone has been badly robbed out over the centuries. I guess this is the case with most castles across the landscape. It's a shame, but then at least some of the ruins remain. If the stone hadn't been robbed out, they could probably rebuild some parts of the castle that had naturally fell into ruin over the centuries.

I’ve been there from time to time. Never see it in such detail and the drone views give a feeling of its place in the land. I think too many people miss the castle, as it’s not well signposted. Thank you.

Thank you. Yes, to be honest, it was my first visit after visiting Kendal many times. It's something of a hidden gem.
