The shotgun that started it all...and it is based on two of the best pump-actions on earth. Still, it hunts a different kind of prey, one that still walks after death. In just one night, it became a legend in the world of Survival Horror...

In the RE1 remake, there's a unique "Handling" animation for both the Winchester and STARS Assault Shotguns; but it only occurs if your fighting the Yawn, Plant 42, and Tyrant. Instead of Chris or Jill aiming from the hip, they will instead use the shoulder stock to steady their aim. This is nice detail because the enemies are much taller than the other BOW's.

The Jill Sandwich scene is one of the most iconic scenes in Resident Evil history.

20 years since REmake. I still remember picking it up at Software etc and pouring over every detail. Remakes of this caliber were rare in those days, let alone a remake of a game only six years old at the time. Still one of the best and terrifying as well.

Fun fact: in the remake of RE1 the assault shotgun would later be renamed the riot gun in RE4

I'd like to see the rocket launchers covered at some point. Such as Nemesis' Rocket Launcher or the ones that kill Tyrants at the end of 1 & 2.

considering the fact it got changed to be a model 1897 and it's engraving maybe a bit of retroactive lore maybe spencer got it during his time studying under miranda in the village considering the shotgun there is also a engraved model 1897 maybe the plates on the shotgun could be refit onto the new gun from what was left of the broken one salvaged what they could from the broken one and put it on a new version

Really great to see REmake given some love. My favourite video game of all time. I wrote a fanfict in 2003 that described Spencer down to his shoes including life support and 19th century wheelchair and seeing your thumbnail reminds me of that coincidence that's always given me a smile.

No shade towards the 870, but having the REmake version of the shotgun be a customized M97 makes way more sense. The thing was used in seven wars and was a trench rat's best friend. It's only logical that someone like Spencer would have such a beautifully engraved example hanging in a room meant to entertain and show-off to guests. I'm kinda bummed that it took us to Code Veronica before we got more historical firearms in the series. Village is chock full of them, but they aren't exactly historically accurate.

I might be wrong, but i think the original Remington 870 from RE1 makes a re-apereance in RE4 alongside Richard's Assault Shotgun, named as the "Riot Gun".

I kept using the mansion shotgun till I got Richard's semi-auto shotgun. Mansion got me out of a lot of sticky situations. Can't wait for the next video, whether it's the Sentinel 9 and Silver Ghost or the final Samurai Edge video.

Good to hear from ya, Joe. I don't think there's a more iconic gun in the series outside of, well, the samurai edge. Iconic moments attached to it, alongside a power trip, nothing really compares. Outside of the 12 gauge Richard brought into the mansion that night.

I am a huge fan of your videos, how they not only deepen the lore around these beloved games. But also that you take the time to explain the details of each firearm. And as a firearms enthusiast, I can really appreciate. SPeaking of, I can't be the only one who was bothered that the STARS Teams went in so under equipped? Carrying on them, only sidearms and no long guns such as ARs? And seeing as they were a special operations team like SWAT, I found this odd.

People talk about the Samurai Edge being iconic, I disagree. This shotgun is the most iconic weapon in the whole RE series for me; this is the gun that gives you the chance to survive the Spencer Mansion. Joseph Kendo is bang on about this weapon giving you confidence, one minute you are struggling to take down the most basic zombies and going through 9mm very quickly, then this shotgun comes along and becomes the equaliser, the gun that gives you the chance, the hope and ability to bring the fight to the undead denizens of the Spencer Mansion. I've been playing the RE series since 1998 and even though I've completed the OG (and best version IMHO) dozens of times, I still love that moment when you get the shotgun and decapitating zombies with one hit kills by aiming the shotgun upwards. Is it the most powerful gun in the game? No. The Magnum takes that honour. However, it IS the most versatile weapon in the game, there is plenty of ammo for it, it has a wide spread, which really does help against the hunters when you re-visit the Mansion as Chris after beating Plant 42. The Magnum may be more powerful, but the ammo is scarce and it is a slow weapon; not an ideal weapon to kill hunters. Personally, while I do really like the Assualt Shotgun in the REmake, I don't like the fact they nerfed both the shotguns in the REmake, they should have kept the 100% decapitation success rate for both shotguns, or even having the first shotgun occasionally not blow zombie's heads off, but have the assault shotgun possess the ability to always blow zombie's heads up if you aim for the head at close range to clearly demonstrate why the assault shotgun is a superior weapon that is worth saving Richard for. Anyway, the shotguns in OG RE and the REmake, are truly iconic weapons that help transform your character from being the mansion's bitch to making the mansion YOUR bitch! Excellent video, I really enjoyed this, especially finding out the origin story behind the Broken Shotgun! This is without doubt my favourite video of the whole channel's collection!

The RE1 shotgun feels like the most powerful shotgun out of all the RE games that can basically kill anything without needing upgraded parts unlike the other games.

This is a fun series to watch. I love the added info that was obvious when playing the game initially…but clearly they put a lot of thought and creativity into the weapons available. Thanks for posting.

This Shotgun is one of the most iconic weapons in the resident evil franchise and for me whenever i pick up this weapon in RE1 or RE 1 Remake i always feel just a little safer so it was fantastic to see you go into such amazing detail about the design of this weapon as well as it's history within the franchise

I love how since day one the way weapons work in RE never changed. Pistols keep you alive, Shotguns are high powered crowd control or individual obliteration, Magnums are high precision damage and nothing stops a rocket launcher.
