Why is Dr. Dyson on a media tour defending Drake? Weird NGL. It also sounds like, he hasn’t really listened to all the tracks. It’s not about being half black/half white. It all has to do with Drake never embracing his culture until it was convenient for his monetary gains. There are TONS of video of Drake, before he got big, talking about how Toronto slang is ignorant and not cool. He was never about that life until he wanted to be a rapper and saw the money he could make once he shifted his identity to embrace his blackness. Nothing wrong with changing your mind and embracing your other heritage. It’s different when you exploit it for monetary gain.

There are a number of things, including music and rhetoric, that I like now but didn’t like 20 years ago or vice versa. The man loves music and the culture and always has. Why can’t the narrative be that he makes music when he’s inspired and that music is an illustration of whatever he was inspired by at the time. That is not exploitation. Everyone isn’t bad. Kendrick was bringing up Drake’s authenticity because the dude is from Canadian suburbs and every 3rd record he drops he’s talking like he’s a mob boss. On top of him going to other areas and essentially ripping off their regional sound to stay fresh and current. There’s literal clips from his acting days of him making fun of Canadian slang that he called ignorant. He now occasionally uses that slang (people change maybe his opinion did. That’s cool) It’s not about him being half white or Jewish it’s about him only displaying black American (occasionally British) culture that’s he’s not apart of through his music. While personality wise not being what he projects in his music. Also bringing up Idris Elba who’s an actor who’s playing rolls and comparing it to Drake who’s in a genre of music that prefers authenticity is like comparing apples and oranges.

Regarding the mob boss stuff… He didn’t start with that type of talk. And he’s been at the top of the industry for like 13 years now. Why we act like it’s impossible that he changed during that time? It would be weirder to think he isn’t a bit more of the “mob boss” image he puts out these days than the suburban kid he started as. Also, what’s wrong with liking different sounds and making music in those styles, especially when he helps put those sounds and artists on a whole new level of fame?
@MAJ724
@MAJ724 27 күн бұрын
@@BlakeZeb apparently other artists aren’t buying the mob persona and neither are the fans. The Game and his manager literally said Drake was visibly nervous his entire time in Compton shooting a music video a few years ago. And there’s no issue playing with other styles. Rappers use beats that are typically used in different region for instance. The thing is Rappers still sound like themselves on it they don’t start sounding like a rapper from that region(using their slang etc.) Drake does that. Apparently they don’t like that. Drakes entire issue is he’s not genuine. Another comment used the excuse Drake travels hangs out in different cultures etc. You don’t think other people or artists do that? Why hasn’t Kendrick, lil Wayne or Jay z taken on accents in their music from other areas they’ve spent time in over the years? (like Drake did with London at one point.) Also Drakes entire thing is he’s historically benefited very few rappers he’s worked with. Either they’re already big and don’t need him. (Future for example) or they either end up working with him and their music career takes a dive into nothing (ilovemakonnen). They’re on his label occasionally put out stuff to ok fanfare spend most of their time writing for Drake( partynextdoor). If they’re lucky they avoid Drakes bs attempt to rope him into working with him and get big on their own(the weeknd).

It sounds like Dyson either skipped or completely misunderstood “Meet the Grahams,” where Kendrick even addresses Adonis, saying, “never code switch, whether right or wrong, you’re a Black man, even if it don’t benefit your goals.” Part of what bothers Kendrick is that Drake, a former child actor, often caricaturizes people and things that Kendrick experienced in real life, and he (Drake) can take that caricature mask off and put it on at will, whenever it’s profitable. Dyson is very focused on Kendrick’s criticisms of Drake, but Drake’s criticisms of Kendrick are quite telling, too. In “Family Matters, Drake attempts to discredit Kendrick by naming rappers who “REALLY” gangbang in the West Coast: YG, Game, and “even” Chris Brown. But Kendrick actually comes from that world. He’s a survivor of it and he’s lost friends and family to it. Drake’s only relationship to that world is through popular music where he has very much continued his acting career. He basically plays “Cowboys and Indians,” so to speak. Still a very talented artist.

I think Michael Dyson is missing the point Kendrick is questioning Drake’s authenticity to the hip hop space especially after understanding the history of the genre. Drake is from Canada no hip hop history, no specific sound that he cultivated even though being the biggest from there, no Toronto specific lingo incorporated into his music none of that. Meanwhile KDot is really from Compton, he’s really from a blood hood, and even though he doesn’t make traditional west coast music he could and no one would question him. Not only that there’s a video of him battle rapping in the bounty hunter projects can’t get more hip hop than that

What’s the point though? You can’t make hip hop music if you’re not from certain areas of America? Like, if Drake made a TPAB type album, I can absolutely see why he would get shit on for that. There is no racial roots to the battle lol. It’s culture. The whole point of saying Crodie. It’s Brodie with the B replaced with a C. Basically, copying LA gang lingo. Drake criticized Kendrick place in the culture, and said he gets more love in LA than Kendrick who is from Compton. #1 Drake don’t even know LA is LA, Compton is Compton, Long Beach is Long Beach lol. Second, how you going to question my spot in the culture when you pattern yourself on Black American culture. Especially Black LA culture. Has nothing to do with race. The fact Drake said that “get the slaves freed” line essentially proved Kendrick’s point. Drake is not hip to the culture he’s in. He’s just in it, and that is a part of his advantage. He can sound like he’s from Houston today, Atlanta tomorrow, Memphis the day after, and Jamaica the day after that… and nobody really considers it because where he’s from is like an unknown. Kendrick can’t do that shxt lol they’d say he’s copying. You can just look at all the NY Drill Rappers and see that. Everybody just looks at it like, “Yall wanna be Chicago.” Even though that style really from the UK but thats another story. So yeah… Rick Ross is the one who pulled the white man angle into it. Kendrick was always talking about Culture.
@rouke3254
@rouke3254 28 күн бұрын
The issue with Drake is that he has the foreign idea of what culture is. The reason he imitates other accents is because it can create a new style of song and even says so himself. He doesn’t think this is wrong because only in America do we push such an emphasis on culture. They have done studies on this when white people imitate black culture it’s frowned upon but when black people imitate white culture it’s not frowned upon. Basically saying it’s okay for black people to take from white culture but not the other way around this study was done in 2021. America is laughed at by the world because we fail to Integrate cultures instead we put people in groups that they are never suppose to break from then we asking why we all hate each other because we fail to understand each other cultures and the only way to do that is to embrace aspects of the other persons culture without. prejudice and that is what the rest of the world has been doing but American just doesn’t seem to understand that ideology but besides that Drake is just ignorant.The issue with America is that it’s one of the most diverse country’s in the world with people from an arrange of backgrounds and it’s hard to form a society like that when in the past one group would have just enslaved the other group now we actually have to live together but if we don’t embrace each other then we will just despise one another and that it’s what leads to war. That means if a white person wants to have dreads they should and if a black person wants to be a cowgirl they can but what that doesn’t suggest is a white person talking about what it means to be a black person in America and vice versa and you see a lot of this bullshit rhetoric on both sides of the spectrum.
