If you can find one of these perfect portable machines, buy it. The prices are getting pretty steep lately, but are generally in range for a machine of this high quality. Made In Japan is about the best thing you can know about a Kenmore from this era. (Video 130)

Sir, I live in the U.K. and have just bought one of these machine from a charity (thrift) shop. I have yet to change the 110v plug for a plug that will fit in a transformer to convert it 240v; however, I cannot wait to try this little machine. I would also like to thank you for putting up videos on how to service these wee machines.

I have one I inherited from my dear uncle who passed away in the early 90s. He was quite the renaissance man. I just took it out of the closet and will see what shape it’s in. Will have it repaired if needed. These old machines are worth keeping.

Fantastic machines, indeed. Here in Japan, these are called the Jaguar "Mate" series. There are Mate Marks I, II, and III. (There's a free-arm version of the Mark III called the F-3.) There is also a rare version with a built-in handle on the top of the machine. Those are the Mate P-1 and W-1. The P-1 is pink and the W-1, white. Unlike in the States, there is no hype nor following here and they can be regularly had for very little money. I have a dozen or so, and I've never paid more than US$15.00. (Last week I bought a perfect Orange/White Mark II with flower case and all accessories for $0.70.)

Totally agree with you, Randy. I have a 158-1430 that looks quite similar inside. Easy access for service and work great. What ever happened to Maruzen/Jaguar. Pity not still being made. If you don't post any more before Thanksgiving, may you and yours be blessed with a wonderful holiday.

There’s a few machines I wonder about that dropped off the market. Now there’s so many buyouts and consolidations happening that it hard to keep track of who owns who. I encourage folks to buy an “old reliable “ because if there’s one thing we’ve learned in the last year, the future is getting hard to predict. LOL Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours as well.

Hi ! I have recently been gifted a 158 -10301. I feel it is very similar to your 10400 except the knobs on mine are black where yours are silver. The bottom screw holes for servicing are in a slightly different position but that's about all I can see. Unfortunately it did not come with a manual which I probably dont need anyway, However, can you tell me if there are any other differences between the 2 machines? Many thanks.

I have this exact sewing machine. It was working great but the presser foot lever slipped off the track somehow and won’t clip up or down. I opened the side and figured out how it should be in there but it won’t stay in place. I’m wondering how to fix this?
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 11 ай бұрын
Take all the pressure off the presser bar by turning the knob on top counterclockwise several turns. Guide the lever bolt carefully through the hole in the lifter lever and get it started without cross threading it. Once it’s started in its threaded bolt hole, continue to tighten it until it’s snug. Then you can reapply the pressure and return to normal operation. 😎👍🏼

Any chance the correct replacement belts are available?
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they are. If your belt is broken or fragmented, you need to replace it. If it’s just slipping, you can adjust the tension by adjusting the motor bracket. Check an online search with sewingpartsonline.com or Amazon and belts are available there.

Hi Randy! I have just purchased the 158.10400 on eBay. The machine that I bought has a broken bobbin winder assembly. I'm searching for a replacement online but am having trouble finding a part that shows as fitting this specific model. Could you possibly help me out with a part number? Thank you for your video! I can't wait to get my new machine.

You can search for that online and numerous providers will pop up. The part number won’t be of much help. When your machine arrives, you can match it by sight very easily.

Hi, again. I noticed that below the pressure button the bar and spring is kind of rusty. Do you recommend using WD-40 to help get rid of some of the rust?
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954

Purchased this exact machine. It sews fine using a straight stitch, but the bobbin thread is loose when back stitching. I checked my stitch length and the tension control. I haven't tried the bobbin tension because it works it's just the back stitch that is loose. Perhaps, I should just give it a go.
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 Жыл бұрын
Make sure there’s enough pressure in your presser foot, by pushing the button on the top left side down at least half way. Put your upper tension dial on the number four (4). Make sure that your bobbin thread is loaded into the bobbin case properly with the thread running under the flat spring on the side of the case. Use a flat bottom zig zag or straight stitch foot. A zipper foot will not give a good reverse stitch.

Mr Randy, my MIL gave me her old Sear Kenmore 158-1301 sewing machine but the motor needs replacement. Which motor should I get for this model? I’m curious about the diagnosis of a failed motor. I guess if it was underwater or in a fire, it might be compromised. Otherwise maybe new motor brushes? If they’re not replaceable then maybe a new motor?You’ll want the exact motor for sure. I’m not sure how to get the correct motor unless you get it from an aftermarket seller who sells new or used Kenmore motors. I surely wouldn’t be concerned about the viability of a used motor as they can be tested very easily prior to installation.

@@vittoriapont710 release the hand wheel clutch knob and run the machine at its highest speed for THREE SOLID MINUTES. If it sat inactive for an extended period of time, airborne particles and old oil may be on the motor brushes and armature. You run the machine to burn that off. You will get a smell. No big deal. The bobbin winder on this machine isn’t working as it should. The clutch releases as it should, and the needle stops its motion, but there’s no action on the winding mechanism, which holds the bobbin to the stopper.
