This is a safety feature per the booklet. Will run the exhaust for an hour or so before letting you reset.

You also had the oven on underneath which created more heat causing the microwave to overheat and power down

Same thing just happened with me, also after microwaving a sweet potato

why was it locked? how did it lock itself?

It overheated and it didn't want to be used or the fan to be turned off. It would not let me unlock it. Even if I held down the control lock button.

My brand new Kenmore gets loud and shuts off.
