This week we are repairing a Kenmore Series 500 washing machine that developed a grinding noise and no longer turned the drum. Includes “the sound” and information on the repair as well as my two failed attempts at a solution.

I don't think the pulley is OEM because whirlpool sells it as an motor assy, but it's better than buying a whole new $200 motor unit! Thanks for sharing.

I agree, I don’t know who the manufacturer is, but it is still working great so far.

You can work that belt back on the pulley by turning the pulley and working the belt back on as you turn it. Then give it a couple turns to make sure it doesn’t jump off the motor.

Agreed. I also found on this one that just putting it on in the correct order made it very easy. 1) motor bolts very loose 2) belt over motor pulley (it has the flanges) 3) put it over the drum pulley 4) tighten motor bolts

It looks like removing the motor was not needed. Just remove the defective part and replace would solve the problem.

That is correct. I couldn’t really see what I was doing with it upside down. That said, you would still need to at least back off the bolts. Taking it out makes it much easier to access the pulley.

I laid the machine down on its back. Everything was right in front of me. Super easy to get to. Pulled the belt gently towards me from larger pulley and while turning it, it came right off. And yes, that’s the problem! All grooves worn out. I ordered the part and should get it in 3 days. Thanks for the video. It was a big help!!

Hello boss im have the same issue how to hell did you remove the pulley I am currently in the middle of doing this. I can remove that plastic pulley

I can definitely see how that can be a challenge. I think I found a socket, maybe 1/2” (not sure) that just fit over the shaft and used it to push those plastic fingers out of the way. It may help to gently wedge something between the motor and the pulley at the same time. I hope this helps. Let me know if it doesn’t and I will think a little harder. It really shouldn’t take much force.

There is no belt on my kenmore series 500

🤔 not sure on that one. Does the bottom look like mine at around the 2:45 mark? On mine the belt is under that cover.

On mine I did not disassemble much. I lifted the front bottom edge just high enough to put it on a Jack stand and accessed everything from underneath.

I ordered and changed the same part , it didn’t fix it still making noise . 😞

I am sorry to hear that. When I got down to the pulley on mine it was pretty clear it was spinning on the motor. It has recently started to periodically make more of a screeching sound, but I haven’t even started to try to address that.
