Being a white-passing Latina, I remember watching this as a kid a being confused by Yasmin's situation. Do Latinos come in all shades and in all cultural backgrounds? Yes. But the doll Yasmin was always giving Chicana/ Metizo realness. Definitely someone of indigenous decent. At least that's how I always saw her. Dark hair, Dark eyed, Tanned skin, full lips. Yet, the seem to cast a girl who is of Spanish decent. Definitely Hispanic, but not Latina. and that is the difference. Like many movies dealing with Latinos they bring in the extended family and the beloved matriarch, the Abuelita. But instead of having an Abuela, they give Yasmin a Bubbie. Implying she's also Jewish. Now, are their Latinos from Jewish descent and religiously Jewish- OF COURSE! But the Yasmin doll was a symbol for so many Latina girls as the what american's have told them what a latina is, and yet this movie tries to portray Yasmin as even more "multicultural" which only confuses the audience.
@Teytuu
@Teytuu 3 жыл бұрын
"White-passing" is an incorrect term to use with latinos. Because latino is not a race. If you're white, you're white. Regardless of nationality.

@@NanaNaima1 It's true that some deaf people can have what's called a "deaf accent," particularly if they lost their hearing early in life, but it's still a very ignorant thing to tell a deaf person they don't sound deaf. Plenty of people lose their hearing later in life, and plenty of people have been forced to go through so much speech therapy that they sound like a hearing person. You were probably just trying to explain why someone might say that, but I don't think it's a good thing to defend.

My brother’s deaf (he has a hearing aid & a cochlear), & he played soccer when he was younger- this may get a bit rambly, but I want to get it out as I recall it being explained to me; sound is a weird thing... he freaks out when people yell, because the sound actually distorts- the key is to speak clearly, & face to face (NEVER speak behind him, because he would also go off on that). My brother also loves music- anything with a base, or a strong beat. When he was _really_ little, he put his head against speakers, because he could *feel* the music through the vibrations. No idea how they thought it was realistic to have a deaf kid _just_ learning that... Before he got his cochlear, he simply took his hearing aids out to play- he has brilliant eyesight (sometimes it seemed almost supernatural, lol) & he could feel the vibrations in the ground, to get a sense of people behind him- & he’s got killer hand-eye coordination. He’s a bit like a unicorn; in that he can do it all- he understands both Signed English & Auslan (he’s stubborn about actually *_doing_* Auslan- he *also* has Asperger’s, which makes him very stubborn [don’t @ me, I’m not judging anyone else- I’m just saying what _I_ personally have lived with]), he has some hearing, he speaks & can lipread - he understands people that seemed unintelligible - our mother wanted him to be an interpreter... but he’s a courier driver- that his boss wants to clone, lol. Sorry for the rambling! Edited for grammar

Speaking Truth I don’t think you get it. Sasha to the black community was a representation of dark-skin girls even in the cartoon. Little girls at the time who where darker skinned looked up to her as someone they related to because she looked like them. So, to see her being light skinned on the movie was sad, and it just shows that Hollywood would always prefer to cast a light-skinned girl over a dark-skin girl because of the privilege that us light skinned people have in this country. It’s sad

Speaking Truth it’s only odd to people who are used to being represented. Not saying we have to pick and choose only people who are our skin complexion. My favorite princess is Rapunzel and she looks nothing like me. But it doesn’t hurt to be represented. That’s all they want is to have their representation. That’s why we where so happy when we got tiana. Not only is she black but she’s dark-skinned and they finally have a princess to represent them

I was so passionate about how inaccurate the Bratz movie was, I had every doll dvd and book. Yasmin and Dylan were casted as white, Dylan the doll is African American and he wasn’t supposed to be deaf. Yasmin is supposed to be a brown mixed Latina middle eastern girl who was based of the CEO’s daughter. They made Jade half white. Cameron should have been blonde. Hey hey! So to answer your question about Dylan being able to hear the whistle: he would likely have visual cues. So someone would sign to know when the whistle goes off. OR depending on if he has residual hearing and what frequency, he could possibly hear a whistle. % of deaf ppl who straight up hear 0% is small. Many of us have residual hearing & it's such a spectrum. I hear deep tones much better & can't really hear high pitched. Some deaf ppl are the opposite of me. Papi Dre & Derrick Coleman are actually both football players! And yeah, the piano bit is weird as hell 'cos we already know how we can listen to music, hahaha (and we have deaf musicians so like...). Heavy bass, loudest volume, there is tech out there (although... probably not in 2007). I think Bratz people just wanted that inspiration porn scene in there.

"Many of us have residual hearing & it's such a spectrum." Asknig as a hearing person, is it true that this residual hearing makes lossily compressed music (MP3s, M4As, streaming services) harder or impossible to listen to? In that FLACs, HD music and analogue formats sound very different to you? I know that lossy codecs are based around "normal" hearing (and that most audio you'll encounter nowadats is lossily encoded)

Honestly, the only good thing that came out of this movie was the 14 movable joints bratz the movie dolls. Their outfits were so pretty and iconic. For anyone who doesn’t know what those dolls were bc the movie is trash, it’s basically the regular bratz dolls wearing the dresses that the cast wore during the talent show, it looked better on the bratz, obviously. It came with cute accessories and a working camera, and a bratz doll for each character with 14 movable joints! Yasmin and Sasha had glimmers gold dresses, Cloe’s was light blue, and I forgot what Jade’s was.

1. I am so happy that you brought up the thing about schools and property taxes. Being a teacher's kid, I knew about this forever but most people don't. 2. I loved the interaction with yasmin and dylan 3. About the football thing, there was a whole football team that was deaf who won against a hearing team because the hearing team would say all their plays without huddling....but the other team were AMAZING lip readers. 4. Jade is Mona from Pretty Little Liars!!!

@@Brianna58321 ok, the easiest way is this: schools in the US get money based on property taxes in the school district. So a school in a rich district will get more money because the property taxes are higher and a school in a poor district will get less money. Think inner city chicago (a very poor and high black population) versus Hollywood (a very rich and high white population). The race part does play a part as well, but that's more a racism thing than a white=rich black=poor thing. THAT part I don't quite understand.
@victoriawang5315
@victoriawang5315 4 жыл бұрын
@@mykaelaparadis5264 It's because when cities were being built, people were still blatantly racist so they did this thing called "red-lining" on the city's blueprints. Those were the "bad" parts of the cities and since the "good" parts would all be sold to white families, POC could only live in the red-lined parts. This was basically a ploy to keep segregating and it worked because people living in red-lined areas has poorer schooling, therefore had less income, which meant buying property/renting apartments in the red-lined area, etc.
@Rita-kx3yr
@Rita-kx3yr 4 жыл бұрын
@@mykaelaparadis5264 Regarding systemic racism I have some stuff. Basically, anything that utilizes property as a metric give poc a disadvantage due to the historic disfranchisement of black property ownership and considered personhood. If you look into redlining, it a practice starting from around 1930s where lender deny residents loans or insurance from particular neighborhoods, corraling poc into particular neighborhoods or districts designated with red compared to wealthy white neighborhoods marked in green. There's practice of "white flight" where some sellers would use the arrival of a black family to show that the place was going down hill, with white owners quickly selling their homes and moving to all white neighborhoods. Suburbs were also really the product of the GI Bill, which gave benefits to veterans after wwii. However, it wasn't properly applied for black/poc military men, thus not giving them or their future descendants any advantage in comparison to their white contemporaries. Also house of equal age and quality are often significantly lower in value if located in historically black districts. So anything utilizing property tax puts poc at an even further disadvantage. Overall waaay too much messed up things in America relate back to race and the results of slavery.

I always found the pacing of this movie so strange. 2 years go by within like the first 20 minutes, and the rest of the 1.5 hours takes place in only a couple of weeks It also felt like it had 3 climaxes--the girls fixing their friendship, Meredith being humiliated at her own party, and then the talent show. Made the movie feel extra directionless and the final talent show performance way less important than they wanted

about dylan and his "feeling" for music, i'm pretty sure the character wasn't deaf for his whole life but for a couple of years. so he probably used to be a huge music lover and he played the piano, but now he can't hear it anymore, which is why the teacher taught him how to feel it. also, it's kinda weird that he's able to read lips so well after being deaf for only a few years bc studies have shown that even ppl who have been deaf for their whole life, don't understand everything someone says through reading lips (pls correct me if i'm wrong)

I'm not Deaf, but I have taken ASL and a big part of it is Deaf culture so long story short, lip reading is hard and very impractical for most Deaf people (so I've been told, maybe there are some who like it). Again, not a Deaf person, but it looked to me like they portrayed him poorly unless he was supposed to have become Deaf part way through life. Like... Deaf people know how to "listen" to and enjoy music...

As someone who watched this movie when it came out, while she was still 11 and in love with Bratz, I can assure you that the young version of yourself would have been absolutely enraged by this movie. I was so creeped out and irritated by all of the “positive” stereotypes placed Sasha and Jade. I didn’t even fully understand positive stereotypes in media - I was just hyper aware of having seen their tropes. Asians don’t show up unless they’re the “smart kid” and if sole black characters aren’t colorful and boisterously ghetto, they’re snooty and unbelievably rich. Those dolls had personalities in the animated stuff already - these people didn’t have to start from scratch but they did anyway

Ppft Jade reminded me of Claudia from the Baby-Sitters Club. Strict Asian parent says nO to the cool shit and stuff. It's like the only reason Jade was Asian was solely to give her one reason why she couldn't wear her cool clothes. Might as well make her full white since there was no reason for her other than her mom going tiger mom on her. Smh. Might as well made her Mary-Anne also from BSC.

Smh 🤦🏽‍♀️. Sry for the ran lol I just remembered the books series.
