Honestly, Dren's basic design looks kinda cool. Like, she starts out looking like a weird monstrosity and ends up looking human, but not quite all the way there yet. Also, if this movie was less terrible and not a horror movie, the idea of a woman who had a bad childhood with her mother getting attached to a synthetic humanoid creature she created, and raising it as her own to be a better parent than her mother was, sounds like an actually interesting film. When we saw Dren get to "child" age when Elsa started dressing her up and stuff, I was actively wishing they had just scrapped the horror genre and just explored that parent-child relationship that was developing more. If that movie isn't a *way* better concept, it's at least preferable over... Whatever they actually did.

Didnt realize you did this film! Girl I have a story for this shit. This movie was weird as hell. But I saw it in theaters. Here is that story: My boyfriend at the time had a habit of “staying friends” with his ex’s. It was a point of contention but it didn’t cross a line so it was just an elephant. In any event, his ex right before me came to town to visit her family (from out of state). So he invited her over for dinner and to see this movie (watching horror movies was a thing they did). He was going to do it with or without me so here we all go. We go to the theater where somehow she ends up sitting in the middle of us. So I couldn’t talk to my bf and she could talk to him while I can’t hear. So aside from the insanity of this movie, she spent the entire film literally moving in her chair after talking repeatedly about how the main male actor made her wet. No lie. Then we went home (on the way he got pulled over because a car like ours sped past us and the cops thought it was us-he got a ticket), and after getting home she insisted on cooking and rewashing the plates I cleaned to “make sure” she wouldn’t get sick (celiac). Then when we sat down to eat, she sat across from him leaving me to the side. Her table chit chat conversation topic? How much she loved blowing her new boyfriend. Then she wanted to go home so he of course took her. But because his kid was home, he took her alone. And was gone for two hours. To this day this movie is not only a sci-fi abomination of fuckery, but it’s cemented in my mind as a central part of the most awkward evening of my adult life.

Whats really frustrating about this: This could have been such a nice exploration of family, otherness and ethics mixed with monsterfucking - but instead its just some classic weird dudes horror movie
