Kenny began his career studying timpani with Vic Firth! Vic helped Kenny audition and eventually get accepted to the Tanglewood Music Festival.
Kenny then later auditioned for the Aspen school of music. Thinking he did not get accepted, Kenny already planned his summer accordingly. After realizing he had not checked his school mail box, Kenny was shocked to discover he was not only accepted but had to be there in two weeks!
While at Aspen, Kenny met George Gaber who was a professor of percussion at Indiana University. Kenny then decided to go and get his performance degree at Indiana.
While attending school in Bloomington, Indiana - Kenny gets the opportunity to audition for John Cougar Mellencamp. Kenny then decides to go back to his roots of playing drum set after being a classically trained musician!
Kenny auditions for the band and gets the gig! He then goes out to L.A. with John Mellencamp to record an album. After a short dispute with John, Kenny goes on to record the now infamous air-drum solo from 'Jack and Diane'!

Kenny, your my favorite drummer. I'm a 49 year old drummer of 45 years. When "Jack and Diane " dropped, and you came down in the middle, that was my euika moment. You've been my teacher ever since. You're the groove master and I love you.

Kenny, I remember, years ago, I had signed up for a master class with you along with 5 other students, at the Long Island Drum Center. the day of the master class none of the other students showed up. It was just you and me and it was cool.

Kenny, I have always said what an awesome drummer you are. My parents were deaf, but they could feel vibrations, if they were alive today I would ask you if they could sit next to your drums and enjoy the awesome rock and roll you do today. I will always have the deepest respect and love for you! Kenny Rocks! Eva

Kenny provided me with an early game-changing moment in my own life and career. My first experience in performance medicine (I'm an ENT) was being called down to the Fillmore West in San Fran to see Marty Balin, . After seeing Marty, Kenny befriended me, and literally spent the entire evening with me; his respect for me, and interest in me, created moments that were life changing to me. It gave me the confidence to move forward with the idea that I could excel at these things professionally.

I need to show this video to my longtime friend who I recently had enough of as a drummer I played with. I booted him for his refusal to listen and doing things his way. It doesn't work like that, whether you are in a famous guy's band or not. The drummer's job is to serve the song, not himself. Kenny realized that, and look at the results! Excellent story!

Maverikk68 As Daniel Glass would say: "I always say that a drummer's job is to make people dance. But so many drummers are stuck in Drummerland and forget that. You have to be in Musicland, which is where all the other members of the band are."

+Crimson Sunrise I played aside one of the top guitarists of my country years ago. he said; watch the girls, if they dance you've got it right, you can always rock the guys, but if you can get the girls dancing at the same time then you've got it.

That is correct. This is a great personal story, I really enjoyed watching it; the part I love the most is that even with the discipline and dedication, not to mention the talent, one needs the chance and the opportunity; Kenny had that at that time and that makes a huge difference. I have always approached drumming as part of the band and the band as a conversation, no matter what it is being interpreted; I am not even a soloist; I do not study for soloing, I study to be part of something as a whole, to make music, not just noise, many drummers go for speed and display and showmanship, I rather lay back as much as possible and blend with the band, the part I do not like about drumming is that drums are always the center of attraction in a band, yet, I went nowhere with this line of thinking and acting my whole life and nobody knows my name, and that is fine but like me, there are thousands out there. The life changing point is to strike luck, a bit of it is needed, otherwise your life will be changing into a different careers like mine did. I do not regret it. I play the part that life gives me to play. Can not fight destiny. Nobody gets really discovered anymore and nobody approach anyone to offer you a record deal or a walk in a studio to record with Mr. or Mrs. already famous hot artist. If it is in your path, you will get it, if it is not, it does not matter how disciplined and talented you are; you will stay where you are and eventually will fade out.

To a certain degree yes. That doesn't mean the drummer can't have any input or say in matters. Unless he gets paid as such.

Glad he didn't let Mellencamp send him home ! One of my adolescent fantasies was to take over on drums if Kenny ever left JCM....He did leave but JCM had lost a lot of his soul and convictions by that time....plus nobody called. LOL

I've watched a number of these "Game-Changing Moments" and it seems like the most common lessons are being highly prepared, and meeting someone who propels them. Sort of like the definition of Luck: Where preparation meets opportunity.

A dedicated humble musician is always gonna triumph over a very skilled cocky musician. As a person that's lead many groups, I've always given the spot, no matter what instrument, to the most dedicated musician; they've got potential and can only get better, unlike a cocky musician that only does what they want, even if they are the best.

Kenny is the man. I got a good one. Fired by my band for not being able to nail the click track consistently - two years later after busting my ass with lessons and hours of practice, I get hired back by same band! They came courting me which was the funny part, but there was no bad blood and we went on to have a decent career in the 90s. Inspiration can come from amazing places we sometimes don't realize we are connected to. Kenny found his true potential and took off with it.

Great stories! You really warm to him. As I see it the drum kit is effectively more or less a different instrument depending on the style. Rock playing is utterly different to triplet based jazz for example. The fact that you can play one does not mean you are good at the other. So no surprise if a 'complicated music' player can't do a Charlie Watts impersonation.

Oh boy, I am not a very good drummer; I need a big kit to disguise that, lol, I would have been fired if he says to me I need to play with a very basic kit because I would have responded like " I do not tell you what type of mic to use for singing do I?" this happened to me in a band I was where we were playing at a local county fair and there was this yellow, I think yamaha drum set at the stage where all 14 bands that were participating had to use..thing is I was at that time playing pearls and I am very personal with my kit, the way it is because an instrument is a very personal thing! so I fell into a big fight with the stage manager and my band director about this; they said "well everyone have played with them drums with not issues" and I said "I am not everyone" needless to said, it ended up me accepting to use their drums but with my hardware from my own set which it was configured already to my liking and confort; we played and the band fired me after...lol...they called me a month later when they could not find a suitable drummer yet to take my place; we mutually apologised and that was that! that was a life changing for me as I learn you have to always stick to your guns; sometimes makes sense, other times we would have to yield. It is hard when anyone comes and tells a drummer; you are playing too hard, or that kit is too big, or your heads are out of tune or your cymbals are too bright in its sounds..no other musician takes so much abuses and intrusion in a band than the drummer!
