Nashville's Rory Hoffman was playing in the Heritage booth at NAMM 2004 when a guy asked if he could sit in. Rory had no idea who he was until after they played a tune and the guy said "Hi! I'm Kenny Burrell". Right after that, Henry Johnson joined them for "But Beautiful" and some blues. Rory talked on a TV Show about playing with Kenny that day and said he was sorry there was no tape. Surprise, Rory! Here is Rory Hoffman's story of that day:
"Back in 2004, I was at the NAMM show in California, demoing for Blade guitars. During my time off, I'd go around to the various archtop booths and play, because I did not own any archtop guitars at the time and wasn't playing nearly as much jazz and swing as I get to do now.
Anyway, As would often happen, people would come up and ask me about how I play, and if they could pick a tune with me. So, I'm at the Heritage booth, and this happens. After me and this other guy play a tune, wherein we are trying to negotiate whether or not it's going to be 12-bar or 24-bar blues, he introduces himself to me as Kenny Burrell. HOLY MOLY! I just picked with a jazz guitar legend! He is about to do a demo at the Heritage booth, and asks me to continue to sit in with HIM during his set. So myself, Henry Johnson, and Kenny Burrell proceed to do 2 more songs.
Several years pass, and I often thought about that moment of my life and lamented there was no video of this once-in-a-lifetime event. I mean, I don't know how many people have played with the giant Kenny Burrell informally in the middle of the crazy NAMM show, but it can't be many.
Last year, I tell this story on a "Learn and Master Guitar" session that Steve Krenz does for Gibson Guitars. And by some stroke of fate, a guy name Malcolm MacDonald watches this video and hears me tell the story. And he is the one person on earth who ACTUALLY DOES have video of me playing with Kenny and Henry. So, 9 years after the event happens, I finally learn that it was documented, and here, for your viewing and listening consideration, is Kenny Burrell, Henry Johnson, and me, playing at the Heritage booth at NAMM 2004." -Rory Hoffman.
LINK to Rory's appearance on "Learn and Master Guitar" (He tells the Kenny Burrell story @12:00):
• Jazz Guitar with Rory ...
Rory's friend Marc Rosen sent the following note:
"Check out Rory's performance at Guitar Town Copper Mountain ... He told me the story behind this ... He had no idea that he was jammin' with the Master Himself ... but was thinking while they were playing ... Man ... this guy shounds like Kenny Burrell!!!! You hear his surprise when Kenny introduces himself ... Rory is an amazing talent and of course Kenny Burrell is a legend.
P.S.: Henry Johnson ain't no slouch, either!"
You will like this, too - Rory and Tommy Emmanuel. "Rory Hoffman - Guitar Town - 8-9-14 Copper Mtn." • Rory Hoffman - Guitar ...
At 20:28 someone said it looks like Kenny's talking to Eric Clapton. No, he's talking to me. You know, I get that "you look like Clapton" all the time. I usually say "No, Clapton looks like me, but there the resemblance ends!" I had loaned the handkerchief to Kenny to clean his neck and took the opportunity to introduce myself. Kenny said "Nice to meet you," and I said "Actually, I met you at the London House when you played there in 1974." We had a nice laugh about that, and later joined the Heritage owners for dinner, a great time.

besamemucho5 I refer you to Rory's comments (see above in "About) - Rory wrote "After me and this other guy play a tune, wherein we are trying to negotiate whether or not it's going to be 12-bar or 24-bar blues...". This would account for your assertion that "KB looked lost...", at least until they had resolved which song form they would be playing.

When someone asks me about what a "sweet" guitar tone is supposed to sound like, I immediately tell them "just listen to Kenny Burrell"... It's not just the tone ; his technique is amazing and comes second nature. Love that gorgeous blue Heritage signature model, also. Kudos also to Rory who is simply amazing and Henry is pretty damned good, as well. Fabulous Post ! All the BEST...Dan.

Rory was sort of an unknown in 2004, but Henry was a well-established name. Henry Johnson started out in Jack McDuff's organ groups and then was a sideman for Nancy Wilson. He played with Ramsey Lewis for about five years and then was on the road with Joe Williams for 13 years . When Joe passed away, Henry took over the group as bandleader. He next ran Henry Johnson's Organ Express in Chicago, which appeared for many years on the NPR New Years Eve coast-to-coast broadcasts. In recent times, Henry has been back with Ramsey Lewis Electric Band, touring the world. Henry has made many recordings as a leader; about ten years ago, Nancy Wilson appeared on one as a "sideman". I had heard Henry playing around Chicago for many years, but never really met him until we got to hang at NAMM 2004 for five days. The night after he played with Kenny and Rory, we went to dinner with Kenny and his wife. Henry is one of the nicest men, and he knows more about music than anyone I've ever met.

I never heard of Hoffman before, and had the obvious question as an uninitiated viewer, which I don't see addressed here, but in case anyone else is wondering, I found this explanation from an interview at Guitar Player Magazine's website: How did you get started playing music? I started on guitar, piano, and harmonica at around three years old. It is because I started so young that I hold the guitar the way I do. I couldn’t wrap my hand around the neck, so the easiest way was for me to lay it on my lap and push on the strings over the top.

I'm going to make an Emporer with no clothes comment. But first, and for those who would object that I'm not in the know: I'm a jazz musician and jazz historian, and have listened extensively to jazz guitarists (Django, Christian, Johnny Smith, Kessel, Montgomery, Raney, Farlow, Pass, Hall, Martino, Benson, McLoughlin, Birelli and in between and on) since my early teens ( initially under my fathers guidance, an excellent Django/Smith inspired guitarist). Here's the comment: Kenny Burrell is so overrated it borders on the bizarre. I get his place in history, and I'm not saying he's not of pro Caliber. But against the backdrop of all that has been done on guitar - and where the likes of Christian, Django, Kessel, Farlow, Montgomery, Pass, Smith, Breau, Martino still can still stand the test of time and blow you away - Burrells single string lines always leave me amazed, wondering how it is that they still draw any attention at all. And, one more thing: Rory may be the most underrated, under recognized guitarist out there. In this sense he approaches the likes of Tubby Hayes, the most absurdly under rated saxophonist In Jazz history. (check him out).Joseph P CannavoAurora CO
@Mrtubbula
@Mrtubbula 7 жыл бұрын
jpcannavo My sentiments exactly : at some point there has to be a reckoning - a facing of the truth Mr KB is something of a curiosity - it's unfashionable perhaps to suggest that He doesn't quite live up to his legendary status - I put him as a decent early player But more in the category of someone who has benefited from a sort Of "I was there when" phenomena- i.e. Playing with Coltrane etc . I have great respect in so far as he took part in history but from a pure jazz guitarist perspective- no - and no offense meant.

I have to agree. He really is a master illusionist to have fooled Jimmy Smith, Grant Green, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and scores of other tone-deaf lightweights into thinking he was a fine jazz guitarist and worth staking their reputations on. If only he could have played more speedy diminished scales instead of all that tasteless chord melody. He really is just a lucky relic, a historical footnote. Thanks for raising the issue. I think I'll go torture myself now with Midnight Blue. Cheers.

Kenny Burrell is a supreme jazz musician who just happens to play guitar. As guitarists go, he is a leader not a follower, with an unmistakeable personal sound and tone which is an inspiration to those of us who like that particular genre of jazz.
