Live at Sweet Basil. Earlier comment suggested 1999. I went to many sets in Sweet Basil, 1981-1990. Even just listening without the video, has a good live sound.

If you're not in the mood for some burning swing, skip the first tune. There's a lot of variety in this show. Great band! Piano: Nick Smith; Bass: Nat Reeves; Drums: Marcus Baylor. I'm guessing that any drummer who plays for Kenny is required to get a doctor's authorization first! Not for the weak of heart. I love when Kenny plays Coltrane. I also enjoyed the last composition of his (Delta Bottom Blues) that combined elements of Indonesian, Japanese, and American music. Nice, unique recipe.

Thank you Bryan Alfonso for adding the Credits of these fine Great Musicians I get very Disappointed that those who post these Videos never add to the credits of Musicians However Since you so Graciously supply this information, I feel your commentary is Spot on , Talk about having a Heart attack one must be ready I had the distinct Honor and Privilege to perform with Kenny at May Point NJ I We did 2 Songs and I was Worn Out LOL Being a Drummer much Older than Marcus . However This concert I know he did a couple of surprises in the order of Music played,

Perhaps the most sensitive musican of the 21st Century to date. Kenny seems to pick up the state of the nation, the state of people of this by expressing the concern. i just hope that his message gets across. Suggestion to Kenny Garrett : The despair and fears of people of this nation are irrational: Kenny write another universal tune like 'Spanish- Go-Around' and play it over and over again or play 'Spanish-Go- Around." 'We need to have an anthem of hope .

I'd like to think my tastes has matured since the days of Kenny G albums but what do you think of David Sanborn?
@pusanghalaw6 жыл бұрын
MisterMister5893 Sanborn is fine. Not Kenny Garrett or Michael Brecker but never pretends to be what he's not and great at what he does. Check out Another Hand: www.discogs.com/David-Sanborn-Another-Hand/release/2422015 He's like Stan Getz - no serious fireworks but delivers the goods. And you have to give him props for his late night show with Marcus Miller: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunday_Night_(American_TV_program) And the comparison is very unfair to a genuine artist like Mr Sanborn (that other fella can get hit by a train and I wouldn't care... poor train).

If you feel Kenny hasn't progressed since playing with Miles, no offense but you aren't really paying attention. The man has accomplished alot in his career AFTER miles. Just keep in mind that it is increasing harder as time goes on to do something 'NEW', Jazz has hit every country and yes there will be people who copy Kenny , much like, Trane, brecker, parker, sanborn even. But you gotta start somewhere. If someone starts with those guys, GOOD. better then this smooth jazz shit. ( sorry if i offended anyone)

Why does everyone say Kenny G is bad? He sounds pretty good to me.
@hahabass8 жыл бұрын
You're right, of course, in the sense that what you like, is what you like. Let's call him 'different'? And just to add to that point, as I was listening to Kenny Garret tearing it up on one of his solo's, from this clip, and I asked both my kids individually - their ages 7 & 9 - what they thought about the music they were hearing. The younger of the two responded with 'that sounds like jazz'. The 9 year old thought for a bit, and then, with a grin, replied, 'sounds like farting'. 'No really, it doesn't sound good', she added. Out of the mouths of babes!

this is clearly awesome. from a technical standpoint great. his internalization of the jazz language and ability to solo is great. musically, great. i really can't knock the guy in any way. however, is he really playing anything new? anything completely outside the realm of what coltrane.eric dolphy, sonny rollins have played before? i am now a fan, just posing the question. is originality important? i have always considered the best guys to be the guys with the most unique contribution. armstrong, duke,bird, monk, trane, all had a very distinct approach. is he relegated to just being a great jazz musician and not one of the greats?

pui pui for the alto sax yes
@altariabeats5 жыл бұрын
Certainly hard to compare a modern jazz artist to one several decades ago who shaped jazz to what it is now. Perhaps what makes Garrett most unique is that you can tell it is him from a single note. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find an up and coming alto saxophonist who is not Garrett inspired, such as Braxton Cook who also replied to you! Kenny is undoubtedly the greatest alto player since Cannonball!

Excellent point. The improvising vocabulary is in constant development. But still it is interesting to think what revolutionary idea must come next, we've had fusion of popular music, rock, funk etc. with bop and we've of course had the bop revolution but what is the next comfortable habit of music making that we must react against?
@thehornsoundsgreat61967 жыл бұрын
I agree with the sentiment but I don't think Sonny did anything better than Bird. Anything specific you were thinking about?
