Right after Kenny died, Lionel was on the Bobby Bones show. He said “I just lost 1 of my heroes” & that he met Kenny when he was trying to figure out leaving the Commodores & going solo & “God sent me an angel.” He credited Kenny as 1 of the people who taught him how to treat others saying, when they met, “you couldn’t get any bigger than Kenny Rogers” but “within 15 seconds, he made me feel like we grew up together.” He also added to the “Lady story”, making it even funnier. The 1 word he actually had was “Baby”, but when they 1st met & were chatting, Kenny went on & on about his wife, repeatedly calling her a Lady, so when Kenny asked the song title, Lionel blurted out “Lady.”

I'm a baby boomer and grew up listening to Kenny Rogers and his band the first edition... One of my favorites from back then was I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in... I loved him and his band back in the day and I love him as a single artist you should also react to Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton Islands in the stream it's a classic❤

Lady ended up being Kenny Rogers MOST successful song of his career. It was his crossover hit. It put him out there until so many more radio stations the different genres.

I’ve been a big fan of both of these gentlemen, for many years. I grew up listening to both, and I went to see Kenny Rogers in concert three times, back in the day. Both are legends in the music world, and their friendship was special and rare ! Everyone in that audience and at home watching it, could/can feel the admiration they had for each other as friends. You just didn’t want the song to end ! Without a doubt, this was a once in a lifetime performance, and it will never be equalled ! Thanks for reacting to this.

This still gives me chills when I hear it. It's so beautifully written and the music is absolutely wonderful. This is one of my favorite songs for decades. I know you can understand why this is so many people's wedding song after it came out.

Love this song and this performance! Lionel wrote the song for Kenny to record, which he did and it was a huge hit. Lionel didn’t also sing this song though. He has sung it years later on stage but he never recorded it. Wonderful relationship that some writers and singers have👍

I remember seeing this when it happened live. It was very emotional and was crying through the whole thing. I love both of those artists very much. Hey what up and give him a big kiss on his cheek I was like oh just look at that & how sweet they are with each other. That big tight hug at the end and you can tell they're getting emotional kind of put me over the edge. Then you'll notice right at the end Lionel Richie make sure that the audience recognizes Kenny when they recognize it as a duet by asking for more applause for him. THAT'S a musicians and true showmanship used to be decades ago. You respected AND honored who gave you that boost in your career. Then they made sure in some way that even though they had a hand in it this is forever your song. Even though you both made it together~it's your baby that was brought into the world. I hope that makes sense, it's kind of a passing of the torch thing even if you reach back to honor them? They still publicly acknowledge nope this is YOURS to the audience. It was just a lot less pettiness back then, and little things will love people's backs and weren't made it to big imaginary problems between artists. Just look at we are the world, everybody put their ego at the door you're coming and do your job.

Btw, just so you know Lionel was not the first performer of the song. Lionel wrote it for Kenny and Kenny was the first performer of it and that is what Lionel wanted. Lionel wasn't trying to perform the song. It was Kenny's 100% and Kennny also gave Lionel full credit for writing it during his performances. Which is nuts, because so many artists in the 50's .60's, 70's, 80's never spoke about who wrote songs for them. Elvis had writers for every song as was common for most singers back in the day and today

This was my mom's favorite song. I always feel like crying when I hear it because my mom has passed away. It's bittersweet to hear this song, but I have to listen to it because it's so beautiful. Lionel wrote this song; he is such a great songwriter/singer. Kenny was such a great singer RIP.

Greetings from South Africa. This is so wonderful to see, it takes me back to my teenage years. I remember an interview with Lionel Ritchie from back then when he was asked how he is able to write such incredible Love songs, how does he know a Woman's desires so well. His answered that he read Romance Novels as this put him in touch with the romance Women love. And he has written some of the best.
