This is a special reaction I'm doing today in honor of Kenny Rogers, who passed away March 20, 2020. He was an American and worldwide icon and treasure, and he will be missed.

It actually WAS a movie Don, and Kenny played the preacher who was the uncle that raised the 'coward of the county'. It's not a bad old movie. Its on KZfaq as a freeby if you want to watch it. Great song though - one of Kenny's best. The world lost someone special the day Kenny passed. RIP Kenny.

Kenny Rogers is a great example of what I have been saying. He wasn't traditional country music. He was however a unique and rare talent. His delivery, and storytelling are special. If you ever listen to David Allen Coe's song the Ride. He talks about Hank Williams Sr. And Hank ask him if he can make feel what you feel inside. That is what country music does better than any other genera. It paints a picture of a time or event in a way that you are transported to that time, or place. You can feel, and in some cases almost touch it. All music bring on some kind of emotion, but country music does it in a way that is unlike any other. Not all country does it. Some is just feel good pop stuff I agree. When you come across rare talent just enjoy it. Don't try to put it in a box.

@@RockN2Country @Steven Rogers Well I read it, and I agree...well said! I know I usually come across very rigid in my ardent support of traditional singer-songwriter Country and about 98% of what I listen to is just that, but actually my all-time favorite artist is Leonard Cohen. Not Country, not Southern, not even American :-O ...but he is, in my opinion, simply beyond any box!

I was raised on country music and Kenny has always been my favorite (along with Dolly). I cried when I found out he died. This song has always given me chills in the best way possible, and I always smile when he says Tommy turned and locked the door, because I know the Gatlin boys are about to get what's coming to them. Not sure why, but I have always pictured Tommy as sort of a gentle giant. Someone who is big and strong, but very passive and quiet. These are the kind of individuals who will put up with an amazing amount of abuse, but when you finally push them too far, will unleash absolute hell “There are three things all wise men fear: a storm at sea, a moonless night, and the rage of a quiet man.”

Truthfully, I got so sick of Kenny Rogers, because every song he came out with, my husband learned it, in my garage, my living room, my bedroom, where ever the band could set up! lol Now, I crave hearing it! Kenny was an amazing man! May he R.I.P!

I LOVE watching men listen to this. The story starts with you don't have to fight to be a man and most people of reasonable mind start nodding and saying that's right and you find yourself agreeing and then the story unfolds and there's this moment in reaction videos when the Man's eyes harden and start to burn with fire. I love that moment. Because suddenly the message changes and it isn't about turning the other cheek. It's about Justice. And that's when you see men put on their cape. Always the most beautiful point in the soul of a man is when in just his calls from the deepest part of his soul for him to stand up and draw a line in the sand. And this song kind of brings that out and it's really cool. You did a good job.

Kenny is so good at talk-singing, maybe the best to ever do it. His voice is so naturally musical that he can talk a line and sing a line and you hardly notice the switch. So much talent, and such an incredible career. Also, is there a more badass moment in country music than when Tommy, “turned and locked the door...”? Bad or average storytellers concentrate on the violence of a fight; good or great storytellers put you in the moment, and to me, the most interesting moment of a conflict isn’t the fight itself, but that moment where all the air leaves the room and those Gatlin boys know without any punches being thrown that they’ve done messed up bad…. Also again great timing, I requested this song yesterday I think, and it looks like it all worked out naturally anyway. RIP to one of the all time great voices and storytellers.

I remember when he first came to country music. We liked him but never saw him. No videos in those days. My husband called me from the other room , Kenny Roger's on TV hurry. @heather6668 I just visited a friend of mine this morning, as she and I have stayed in touch over the years. Her company is only ten minutes from my home so I just show up randomly, and we laugh and make fun of each other, which is all we've ever done to each other. I've known her since kindergarten, so aside from my sisters I've known her longer than anyone in my life. She is Scottish, and her name is....(drum roll please!)....Heather. :-)

@@RockN2Countryoh my LOL thanks for replying. How is this though. My mum and I returned to Scotland to live in 2010 - we had a day trip to Loch Lomond Shores where there was a farmers market on that day - beautiful place - we bought some handmade soap and got talking to the lady and she said she'd visited friends of hers in Australia and after talking for a while it turned out that her friends were people who lived in the street that ran perpendicular to ours and we knew them. We've since returned to Australia but seriously what a coincidence. Love your reactions and thanks for the work you do to get them online.

I have watched several of these reactions to this song and other Kenny Rodgers songs. Everyone of the reactions had this in common, they all invoked emotion in the listener. I mean real intense emotion where they all did what he did in the video. THat is the true sign of an artist, when they bring that emotion out in the people listening to it. I loved Kenny Rodgers ability to do this.

When this song came out, I heard he used "Gatlin Boys' as a sort of joke to Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, because in one of the versions of the Gatlin song the line was changed to: All the gold is in California is Kenny Roger's name'. I think your perception of him is correct. Just a good guy who didn't take himself to seriously. I saw him in concert about 2006 and he was funny and I had forgotten how many songs of his I knew but had forgotten over the years. At the end of the show, he said, now I know and you know, I will walk off stage then come back and do an encore, but I am getting to old for that, so I will just stay right here and do my encore. Godspeed Mr. Rogers

I was 4 years old when this song was released. I remember hearing it, a lot, on the radio. I am 45 years old now & haven't heard this song in years. I honestly forgot it existed. Watch the Movie, same name as the song, all 3 Gatlin boys, 2 of them in the Army after the attack on Pearl harbor, were convicted of rape, so after their sentence was completed through the civilian courts, then the Army got to hem them up again, not only for rape, but desertion, cowardice in the face of the enemy, ECT. the movie does not go into the punishment of the 2 Gatlin boys that were drafted after the attack on Pearl, but my experience in the military is that after the state of Kentucky let them out at the completion of their sentence, the Army then court martial them and likely hung them!

10:04 Silverado is awesome! And I agree, this song is like a movie; I don’t feel a need to see the one that was made based on it because the song already created the movie my head. In the movie in my head, the Gatland Boys might be eating through a straw for awhile, but they’ll live and they’ll never dare to bother Tommy or Becky again... maybe they’ll even slink out of town never to return because they are too ashamed to face everyone else after having been utterly destroyed by “Old Yellow”. And Becky doesn’t have to lose Tommy to prison and she knows that when it is necessary, she can depend on him to protect her. That’s my head-canon for Coward of the County, anyway…

It's hard to find a song by Kenny that everyone hasn't heard. He did have a song on an album (not well known) called SCARLETT FEVER. Although the lyrics aren't exceptional, the story is unique. It's one of my favorites.Typical Kenny.

@Sara Rubino You're welcome, and I'm always happy to see you around here! I hope you're doing alright given the craziness of the country and world right now. I can't wait to get back to the normal craziness of the world and be free to roam about once again!

I know a movie was made of his song The Gambler (starring Kenny). I'm fairly sure a movie was also made from Coward although I don't know who starred in it. Many of Kenny Roger's song told stories but also often offered little bits of wisdom. Regards, Steve
