The ONLY Oakland Raider that already had a nickname when he first showed up. That was one of the coolest things about the Madden era Raiders, everyone was given a nickname by their teammates..except Kenny. Never forget December 21, 1974. That date a Legend was created. RIP Kenny "Snake" Stabler

Shame some folks have to pass away - Kenny should have lived forever, one of the great story tellers of all time. One of the greatest football players and sports characters of all time. Here - his mind is sharp as a tack. God bless the Snake, much respect! RIP

I was a kid growing up in Oakland at that time when the Raiders were at their Peak and incredible to watch. Stabler was a true joy to watch. Miami people are still mad at Stabler and the Raiders for what they did to the Dolphins during that early '70s era stopping them from winning more Super Bowls they still have it stuck in their craw about the Raiders beating them. If you listen to the Dolphins interviews talking about the Raiders of that era they still hate them so much because they robbed them of probably another one or two Super Bowl victories. All those were the good old days when the Raiders were truly great. Too bad those days are passed but I was fortunate enough to be able to see all their great teams from the late sixties to the early '80s. Sadly they haven't done much for a long time. Great to see Snake telling stories.

I don't know if anyone here has seen the Snake play, but he was something special. You never counted the Raiders out when he was playing Quarterback. Great Man!

Yeup the 2 minute. Drill. Was something to watch. If he had the ball and at least 2 minutes left. He was gonna get it in,the in. zone,, balitnacoff and him we're an unstoppable force ,,

I saw him play in Oakland. Threw a very pretty spiral. Also met him at his book signing in 1986 or 1987. Real nice guy. Still have the autographed book.

He was my favorite player when I was a little guy. I was really bummed when he got traded and later retired. This was an interesting story. He went from top dog to turd and then worked his way back.

Same here. Never forget that Dolphin game falling Snake throws game winner. People talk about final drive QBs, put some respect on this man’s name. Bore you with a short story: Dad took me to see an exhibition game at Legion field. Shook Lamonica’s hand and they became my team. So as fate would have it a big Tide fan ends up going to college in The Bay. To make a little money, I would go work concession at the Coli. Turn in my stuff at halftime and watch the rest of the game. Nothing like the sound of Bill King announcing Stabler’s magic. R.I.P Snake.

The interesting thing is, if the Chargers had a good defense to go along with their phenomenal passing offense of QB Dan Fouts, TE Kellen Winslow, and WRs Charlie Joiner and John Jefferson, and had that AFC Championship game against the Bengals been postponed ( as it should have been because the -50 below 0 with the wind chill factor temperature was too dangerous to the health of the players), San Diego would have probably defeated the Bengals in that game and gone on to give the 49ers a really tough game in the 1982 Super Bowl. Cincinnati had a good game that Super Bowl, but Air Coryell would really have tested that 49ers defense!

Kenny was a great QB. He and Namath are my all time favorites at Alabama. When Ken went to the Raiders,I naturally followed him.Man they had some great teams and players. Love the stories of how they go out and party,and play the next day and kick butt. Those were the good old days.

In 1980 (or 1981), I went to a Jet game when Houston was in town. Jets are up 28-0 entering the fourth, when Stabler shakes off his hangover and throws four touchdowns to tie it before the Jets pulled it out 31-28. Amazing QB.

Meet the snake at age 10 me and my brother went too santa rosa junior college shag balls for ray guy meet all the raiders back then you could just walk on field watch them practice 1972 great times kenny gave us a soda and water it wasvawesome looking back we were in a simplier time .

Our family business had 11 Season tickets at the Coliseum. Every Home game my hi. school yrs. Saw some of the greatest NFL games. The Snake never let us down. I cried like a baby seeing him again here. A football legend.

I saw that writer who has never played a lick of football in his sorry life, Peter King, say he wouldn't vote for the Snake because his was only elite for 5 years. What a punk. The average NFL career is 3.5 seasons. Kenny was only elite for 5 years he says. I think the guys in the HOF should have a say in who gets nominated and they should have a vote and the vote of the HOFers should be given the most weight. The HOF of Pro football and the Baseball HOF both suck.

I met Mr. Snake at the Vegas airport. He was a very nice and engaging man. And I used to see him riding his chopper around Berkeley.

I saw Stabler in a Houston watering hole in 1983 or 1984, sitting at the bar, smoking cigarettes, tossing shots and lit up like a Christmas tree. Never will forget that he exhibited all the earmarks of the worn out party boy.he was then reputed to be.

In his last few years, he didn't have much arm strength left. I remember two announcers betting that he couldn't throw the ball from the end zone to the 30 yard line. Yes, the Oilers were stuck that deep, and, yes, he managed one throw that was close to the 30, but was incomplete. It was third down and forever, yet a younger version of Stabler mighty given them a shot. He was a cool, calm leader in his day...

I grew up in NY and have been a Jets fan my whole life. Love Joe Willie but for some strange reason, "The Snake" was my favorite QB of all time. RIP Gunslinger!

Kenny Stabler was a gamer and is an all-time great. I loved those late 70's Raiders. What a bunch of personalities and what a wrecking crew they were. Two books that must read. Snake: The Legendary Life of Ken Stabler and BADASSES: The Legend of Snake, Foo, Dr. Death, and John Madden's Oakland Raiders. They are both awesome reads! What a time to live and play pro football. Those guys were wild!

They don't make QB's like The Snake anymore. My first ever NFL game was in Baltimore and it was Stabler to Casper for a sudden death overtime win in the playoffs. Ghost to the post.

Hearing how coach Bryant handled his players, it sounds like it was something that Johnny Manziel could have used when he was a QB in college; it may have made a world of difference with Manziel's NFL career.

Even with CTE ... it’s unfortunate that they don’t find out the reason they do certain things until after they die... without CTE he probably wouldn’t have thrown his wife Rose out of a moving car

Amazing he could remember those stories down to the minute details. He was as cool as a cucumber when he played, you couldn't rattle him. The number of games he played with a hangover and he played great. Madden told a story about how relaxed Stabler played the game. They needed a score to win and it was now or never. Stabler called a time-out for no apparent reason. He walked to the sideline where Madden was, wiped his forehead with a towel, looked up at the stands, and commented to Madden, " Boy we're sure giving them one hell of a game," and then went out and won it.

You had to be aware of Snake on every play a great college qb that became a huge nfl star. He could throw it , flip it or fumble the ball to ya. When he'd complete another pass to Biletnikoff they hustle that ball to the sideline get all that stickum clean off. Just win Baby

I was at Ghost to the Post. Rooting for Baltimore he put on an amazing performance that day and beat a very good Baltimore team at home. He earned my respect forever that day. Tough as nails but cancer is a great equalizer. Rip
