I sang professionally for 20 years and a lot of this came naturally to me at the time, but I stopped singing regularly, started smoking sadly, and my voice had been seemingly lost. But, after only one session with Ken Tamplin, I feel like I can not only get back to where I was in my late teens and early twenties, but probably be an even better vocalist now one year away from 50. I didn't see this coming! Praise God.

when I was a teen I could sing hard and in fact sang for a cover band and we played judas priest and psychotic waltz hitting note for note almost perfectly all the time even while smoking heavily. now in my 40s, I couldn't even hit those high sustained notes anymore even though I still sing regularly in my spare time when my children and wife are out. I'm physically fit like Ken Tamplin, no longer smoke and I seldom drink alcohol but the drive is no longer there. must be a youth thing that your blood is boiling all the time and wanna go wild without a care in your body.

My first tip to amateur singers is: Warm up! Just that alone will get you from a lousy useless voice, to something much more hopeful. It's really quite amazing and very few amateur singers know about it. We do a lot of karaoke and people will come up and ask "I have trouble, how can I sing like that", and that's the first thing I ask back. "Are you warm when you sing?" and they'll go "huh?". Warm up the voice before singing.

I’m *just* getting started on my singing journey. I’m one of those that hates the sound of my own voice. I have friends who are pro recording artists/vocalists, and that’s also incredibly intimidating. But…I recorded 2 vids (both upped to my YT) for one of them to critique, and the kudos and positive feedback have been incredibly encouraging. I’ve rewatched the better of the two vids I recorded about 50 times, and I’m starting to *accept* my vocal tones…don’t like my voice yet, but starting to not hate it. Picking up KTVA 2.0 this week, after I get a pre-sales question answered. Hopeful, and excited. Up the irons!

I've played musical instruments most of my life, on stage and on many other people's albums. But I would never sing cause in early childhood I was punished for "Making Noise" when I tried to sing. The lesson learned; other than when talking, no one was to ever hear my voice. It wasn't till in my 50's sitting around a campfire that someone passed a guitar onto my lap and everyone started pushing for me to sing a few songs. I said my voice wasn't that good but they didn't care. Someone had shared that I was a musician and I was now cornered, no way to escape. So for the first time since early childhood, I allowed others to hear my voice, by singing one of the simple folk songs I knew. And suddenly everyone was quiet, side conversations stopped, all eyes were on me. In my head the "voices" said this is even worse then I thought it would be. Just let me get to the end of this song and they'll take the guitar from me, never ask me to sing again. What I actually heard them say when that song was done. Wow. Do you do this professionally? Where can we go to see you perform? Truth is, at that time, I only had about a one octave range cause I had never developed my voice. But that was a turning point. I started singing more, exploring what my voice could do. Now in my mid 60's I have a three and a half octave range, much better tone and control then I had back then. And have had a lot of fun singing a variety of music, in many different venues. Yet the inner voices still talk down to me every chance they get. To combat these negative inner demons; I focus on the smiles that fill people's faces when I sing, feeding off watching them light up from within. How far could I have gone if I'd started singing sooner will never be known. But it's hard to make forward progress if you spend all your time looking behind at who/what/where you once were. I'm doing my best to keep going forward, bringing joy to as many people as I can, in what time I have left. Thanks Ken, for making/sharing your videos. Which are now helping this older man take his voice to the next level. And I hope everyone else who is watching videos like this, get to experience that moment when their voice (and/or simple act of kindness) brings light to another person's life. It's a feeling you'll never forget. The Good Kind. And know that each life you touch creates a ripple effect, traveling far beyond what you'll ever know. A "Positive" effect on a would that can use all the help it can get.

My only hobby these days is playing guitar. I do work alot in a grocery store, but its nice to have something else to do aswell. Thanks Ken. This is basically what I needed to get started. I have been singing for a while obviously, but the voice is not like my guitar. When I play, I know that I can almost 100% practise whatever I want to without any compromise. With my voice, I am always afraid to do something wrong. I do have my moments where I think I sound pretty good, but I dont want to learn the wrong way or develop bad habits.

When I get in that place of fear and anxiety, which I still do at times. I remind myself of the lesson I learned while watching turtles. They can only move forward when they're willing to stick their neck out. And then about how, by my risking sticking out, I've now been able to experience my music bringing joy to others. To see their inner light shine, as smiles fill their faces, because I've been somehow able to touch them in that moment. May not happen overnight, but well worth the journey to get there. If you have not already, I hope you get to experience this at least once in your life. But getting there will require sticking your neck out, stepping forward when you want to stay hidden away in your shell. Also, when starting out, spoken words, sudden sounds and movements from your audience, may distract you while you're trying to sing. Especially when already dealing with anxiety. I found that practicing in front of a TV, it's sounds and screen action competing with my singing, helped me learn to stay focused on the song I was singing, get past this challenge. Good luck. Enjoy your musical journey.

Brother Ken, just came across your channel for the first time today. Wow! I could listen to you teach your art for hours, you had me fully engaged and performing those exercises with enthusiasm. Love how you thoroughly explain the process. What a difference, from relaxing the neck the throat the use of the stomach it all came together like a fine-tuned orchestra. You impressed me my man! I think I'm going to start referring to you as the Charismatic Vocal professor! Great teacher!!

The control and strength I am acquiring from Your videos like this is so very appreciated , I've never actually had vocal lessons but have sung backgrounds in bands since late '80s. CLYDE HOLLY took it to a new level vocally for me when I met him and got hired (keyboard /back vox BILOXI band) in Biloxi Mississippi in 1995 when he relocated from L.A . I didn't think at age 51 that my vocals could suddenly drastically improve, thank you sir, these lessons you provide have reinspired me vocally and the improvements and understandings of my voice and singing in general are blowing my mind. I can only imagine the improvements that I will acquire after I join your local academy here--- THANK YOU Sir Ken! 🎹🙏

Oh my god! I love this guy! This exact what I have telling my students as I am a professional bowler /coach /ball drilling technician for over 50 years and have said “You can’t put a roof on a house without starting with the foundation first. Then come the walls, etc Right now we’re digging a hole for the foundation “ I have taken a few lessons locally and Just surfing you outshine them all as you have the greatest thing to have Which is credentials , experience, knowledge, personal pride, dedication, desire, determination and I can see your like me you put your money where your mouth is. I am singing up!

At 25:25 the root note / low note you’re landing on at the end of the scales sounds so bad ass. Landing in that low note with the bravado wave and grungy in it. I’d like to hear you sing Fade by stain. You’ve got it figured out my guy. Hell of a singer and even better teacher.
