10ths are something I always used to use when I played with a gospel quartet. We only had piano and bass and the 10ths give you such a big sound. Great lesson brother

Thank you for your very interesting lesson, Kent! This chord playing is to some extent how Eric Satie’s Gymnopedie No.1 has to be played. There is even a bigger spread of fingers that playing Gymnopedie No.1 requires. One cannot play it without proper use of sustain pedal. Michael

Exactly right ...and thanks for sharing your perceptions. Satie was a great master.

BTW... I notice you're playing through the pieces more slowly which I REALLY appreciate. It's a lot less distracting than rewinding frequently❤

My other practical suggestion for the small hands people like myself is just move your thumb on your right hand over to the 10th ... that way you only reach an octave your hands are less tense to play the piano and you still get a pretty good sound

Thanks Kent... I enjoy watching your videos, there's always something learn. I purchased your book a month or two ago and really enjoy going through it...I tend to take my time and and enjoy the process rather than racing through it. Q: Do you use Band-In-A-Box? If so, could you put together a groove of some kind that might help spice up different 2-5-1 practice drills and scale runs. Thank You.

Hey Kent! Guitar player here but 12 notes are 12 notes. Figure to just ask this question in a comment on your latest video. I played a gig tonight at a restaurant and the guy on the piano was phenomenal at soloing over changes. I've been playing guitar since i was 13, i'm 33 now so 20 years, but i'm a blues to rock guitarist mostly. I do know some modes, here and there, and can solo impressively, but I don't know how to do real jazz-changes soloing, like "weaving around the changes", understanding the harmony to a larger degree maybe to really do jazz soloing. I feel like i run scales, but i'm too linear, and i also wonder, does knowing about tritone subs help your lead playing, like with interesting arpeggios, etc? Moreover my question is what videos or playlists of yours do you recommend for getting much more sophisticated jazz soloing ability and what do you recommend for getting there? Right now i can sound like a great blues and rock guitarist, but I'd love to be able to play leads like Wes, Charlie Parker, Jim Hall, or any of the stuff that really does something else in understanding the harmony. More complex rhythmic discipline seems necessary too. Any exercises you recommend or things that get that sort of thing moving?

What i can do really is when it gets to a modulation, i just go from playing say one major scale or pentatonic scale, to the one of the next chord, be it major or minor. when i get to a second of a diminished chord, i just know how to do a little diminished arpeggio. It's playing in changes but very, very simply. i really wanna work through this to a different plane of awareness and ability in my playing!

Your complex question requires a complex answer. Best thing is to get a private teacher who's a great improvisor. Also transcribe solos from recordings and practice and learn them diligently. Also check out my Improvisation videos ...there's about 40 of them. Use scales and arpeggios as a means to an end...but learn how to use target tones and passing tones to create interesting melodies, off the cuff. kzfaq.info/sun/PLFuMibnl_h5bA7Um3IZ38R1kelnoRTPYc
