Looks good...my only advice would be make sure no ones been digging out their cesspit with said shovel😋🤣🤣.... and secondly watch out for galvanised or coated shovels in case heat causes any toxins to leach out🤢

I've seen the old Irish road diggers cook with there shovels back in the 80s! Cooked there breakfast over a half 50 gallon drum🙂 cut in half with a 🔥!! They used there Spade's as a frying pan and plate👍tuff old boys!!

For an in between video it was one of the most enjoyable videos iv seen on KZfaq in a while buddy. Good work.

It used to be standard practice in the days of steam locomotion on the railways for the engine crew to cook on a shovel (not a spade, as you're using - a shovel has the edges turned up where a spade is almost flat) into the firebox door. It tastes all the better when you've manually heaved well over a ton of coal from the tender and slung it forward into the firebox to work up both a head of steam and an appetite. The shovel wasn't as clean as your spade and much larger, being the same one as you'd shifted all that coal with, just hosed off with hot water from a cock (yes, really) tapped into the boiler plumbing (officially present for draining down, but they were an inventive lot back then - tea was brewed in a can from the same source), and a good fireman was one who could prepare a decent meal for two on the go using only the shovel for cooking - and yes, I used to do that on a preserved railway, a bit over forty years ago. I never graduated to driving, but shifted an awful lot of coal, and learned some of the intricacies of getting a good fire (well spread in the firebox to give an even distribution of heat to the boiler) in a number of different classes of engine, all of which needed a slightly different technique. It was a real skill in the days of mainline steam to always have power available for the driver's varying demands on acceleration, speed, and gradient, without wasting coal or water by constantly blowing steam out of safety valves. Cooking and eating was done on the move, during the slacker periods approaching the top of a climb or a station stop. During the actual stop, you would be shovelling like mad, to get enough heat into the system to provide enough steam for accelerating away for the next section, while the driver did the rounds with an oil can.

That's awesome! Brought back memories of the time I lived in Brazil. I lived in a small rural city and when we had to improvise last minute bbqs we would use an old disc harrow. Till this day that was some of the best bbq I have ever had. Love your channel m8!

Hi, back in the late 50s...60s I used to go to work with my father on the building site ,this cooking on a spade was very common amongst the Irish brickies and their labourer's ,all real grafters who were great to me also, their carbon steel spades were like polished chrome from hard use . It was generally steak and onions ,eggs gammon depending how the cash situation was ,I can remember that smell to this day . Wonderful days .

Thats a new take on cooking bacon and eggs on the firing shovel on a steam loco or traction engine. I have done both. The carbon in the coal seems to act as a non-stick coating. You cant beat it!! Thanks Andy, good luck with the build!

Nice 👍. Can you cook steak and eggs in a shovel? ABSOLUTELY! On the South African Gold Mines back in the 70's, Saturday Morning Shovel Cook-ups 2000+ metres underground were a given. We had a specially polished shovel tasked specifically for the task and as a heat source, used either 'marking chalk' (a thick orange-coloured wax crayon) or an oxy-acetylene cutting torch. Delicious .. 😊.

Oh Andy, the master of unusual. Everyone else would use a frying pan to cook steak and eggs. I so wish I could have been with you on this occasion. the closest I got was eating a fried egg roll cooked on a steam loco fire when I was a lot younger.

What fun, and clever too. If you don''t have wolves and bears and 40 below camping challenges, then shovel cooking is an obvious choice for an entertaining video! Two suggestions: 1. Clean the shovel whilst digging a garbage pit, preferably in clean sand. 2. Or...sharpen an edge of a cast iron skillet, cook, and then use it as a shovel after cooking, using the same clean sand to clean it, of course. Additionally, perhaps, as a UK resident, you might demonstrate how to find, grind and use flint as a non soap abrasive for cleaning both shovels and/or cast iron. But whatever else, please keep the videos coming. Yours are both entertaining and informative!
