As a Horse Racing fan, I love Andrew Byers comments on feature races this year. The sound quality was so much better. In my years of racing experience as a handicap or if it rains, it will change the whole outcome of the handicapping that will add to the mix and maybe a huge price in the Kentucky Derby. Good luck to all and made the best horse win.

What a silly trainer stat for Pletcher these talking heads spout out every year. 2 for 64 my foot. The man is not even 64 yrs old.😂 At worst, he is 2for30 from all the hundreds of great young horses he gets to run every year. That's bad, but not so much, considering the near impossible nature of the race. Woody Stephens won 5 Belmonts in a row, but entered about 10 horses, was he 5 for 10 during that run? Silly!

You didn't address what difference an off track may make if we get one on Saturday, nor what difference off tracks made in this year's preps. Catching Freedom and Mystik Dan should move up in consideration with an off track, I think. If JV lets Fierceness run at his comfortable, natural cruising speed, the horse is fast enough to get a good position, but if you see the jock sending him and he has to really hustle to clear the field, you can tear up your ticket. I respect Fierceness most, but if you use him too much early, you'll cook his goose.
@stuarth4296
@stuarth4296 Ай бұрын
How do you know this? Fierceness ran 21 and change and 44 flat at 6 panels and drew away to win by 11 lengths at Saratoga against good maidens in his first race. That distance is a good test of stamina once you go 44 flat for the half mile. He kept going after that race and galloped out around the track and hit a mile in 1:36. That is why he was thrown in a grade 1 right after that. Having to hustle him might actually just invigorate him a bit...we do not know. He never has been winded at all once he gets in a rythym regardless of pace or competition (see BC Juvenile). Or he might run up the track. We don't know for sure. But it appears more likely than not if he runs his race and gets a nice or solid pace he wins.

@@stuarth4296Good answer, especially since I don't think you realize it, but you ended up agreeing with me! You said, "If he runs HIS race and gets a NICE.....pace he wins." I said, "If he runs at his natural cruising speed (which is faster than most, but not the same thing as being rushed from the gate into the turn)...." Same idea. A 44 half racing six f. has almost zero in common with a 44 half racing ten f. F. is exceptional in this year's crop, but not Secretariat, so I wouldn't want to see him ridden out of post 17 to make the front in faster than 46 3/5. Fingers crossed you cash your tickets.

Beyers is picking the FASTEST horse and most accomplished horse BY FAR. Has nothing to do with the track handicapper's morning line odds. All that is is the "expected" wagering of the public. And Derby ML has sometimes been REALLY wrong like in 1993 when Sea Hero ML was 30/1 and by Friday morning the REAL wagering showed him at 15/1.

One thing I don't understand is Mr. Beyer thinking that Baffert is so great, while he tosses Stronghold. Stronghold is the West coast champion, so if he doesn't hit the board in the derby, that certainly doesn't make Baffert look good this year. Something doesn't fit there. I don't know which "something" it is.

Way back in 1977 Andy introduced me to handicapping and Saratoga in "My $50,000 Year at the Races." But, nobody's perfect. In his original speed figure book "Picking Winners" he asserts that pace has absolutely no effect on the race. Whether the horse ran at the front or at the back, the fastest horse as determined by the fig would win. I've always wondered whether that was edited out of future editions of the book.
@johnnymatheis1018

This year should be up for grabs, because of the basically low speed figures, the low prices winning almost every prep race, and the two year old heroes still doing so well, which means that basically we're looking at two year olds. That makes this year's Derby like most of the derbies, a "class determiner" race, instead of a "class determined" race. Still, while I think the long list is pretty long, there are many comfortable "tosses".

At 41:48 The boys touch on Mystik Dan and pooh-pooh his 101 and 550K win...but at exactly 42 minutes, Andy explains why he won at Oaklawn, "the rail was definitely an edge...plus it was a muddy track". First ridiculous thing I've ever heard Andy beyer say!!! Tyler only used what was necessary to ensure the win and didn't get far into him. Even my untrained eyes saw that. Chad ensured that trip with his rabbit, knowing he wouldn't have to go TOO deep on the horse to win. We'll see, he'll go to the bottom this time. I'm guessing 105 beyer, -2 thorograph. Going be interesting for sure. Great show

@johnnymatheis1018 Ай бұрын
Chad isn't stupid enough to use "rabbits". That's a huge misconception about trainers. Only a cheap trainer would "waste" a star colt's talent and money making ability that way. Chad and the other top trainers will use different styles, just in case one style does better in the race. If a trainer tells you he's using a rabbit, he's putting you on.

Great show as usual, but as usual, Andy, you're too negative on the quality of these horses. It's not every year we're going to be given the chance to bet on an Affirmed or a Seattle Slew. Same as we're not going to given the chance to vote for an Abraham Lincoln in every election. We pick among okay horses, not great horses, and that's normal. BTW, is there any chance that the tracks are being maintained in a way that makes for slower races? I'm guessing that with horses breaking down more often that maybe they're making deeper tracks with more cushion. Would love to get your comments on this. Good luck everybody and have a great day!

The most interesting question in the whole discussion was glossed over. Free gave the stats on how few triple digit figs there are coming into the race this year (and recent years) compared to 20 years ago, but leaves it at that. The simple-minded conclusion was "horses are just slower now" and that was that. I find it hard to accept that "horses are just slower." The horse really hasn't changed much, evolutionarily speaking, in such a short time span. Anyone care to weigh in with a theory? I suspect many people will say it's because there are (allegedly) fewer drugs being pumped into horses these days. Is it possible that there has been some change in the mechanics of calculating the Beyer Speed Figs that is producing a trend of lower numbers? Raw times don't seem to be that different , so it's a bit of a mystery to me. This year, as in most past years, the winning time will be somewhere around 2:02 and change.....notwithstanding the annual protestations that they all suck. So to be more succinct in my question: the final raw time will probably be right in the average range. How, then , do we square that with a long term trend of lower speed figs?
