I'd almost forgotten how much fun it was doing this PS replacement to my 940 a couple of years ago...their S-meter and LCD backlight replacements are great as well. Amazing how much lighter the rig is afterwards (although it's still pretty heavy!). Rig should be good for another 40 years now! 73 - Dino KLØS

Thanks for sharing Dino, Have you noticed any noise from the new power supply on lower bands?

@@TheRadioShop None that I could hear Buddy. Surprisingly the two large PS caps removed measured fine for capacitance and ESR. Think you'll agree that this is a very elegant solution to keeping this great old rig going.

No more transformers, yes plural. No more long wires running transistors to a heat sink, yes there are 4 all together if I recall, 2 for low voltage regulation and 2 honkers TO 202 package I think. No more huge capacitors under the AVR board. Was even able to remove said heat sink. I own one. I rebuilt the unit in it. Good video. I have a stingy receive on mine as well, I gotta Patreon to see said video?

Great job , enjoyed how keeped color coded and bolted dow. Volunteering and doing shipping for vrcmct museum. We sell a lot of used ham equipment. We have to make sure everything is secure inside before padding and boxing it twice. Adds a little more to weight but saves getting to beat up by the big companies. Your the best can't wait till the next one.

Kudos for your consistent quality work and attention to detail! Those look like a really nice PS replacement. Personally I prefer the original linear supply. Not surprisingly, some have reported noise in their TS-940s after installing a switch mode PS replacement. Time will tell but switch mode power supplies are not as reliable as as linear power supplies. For me a better way is to recap the original supply and install a high quality 12V PCM fan to replace the fans in the rear. The 12V fan can be thermally controlled by an inexpensive (adjustable) PC fan board and the 28V supply regulated down to the required 12V using a common 12V voltage regulator device in a simple circuit. During operation when needed, the airflow of the new fan based on temp and on demand would be able to supply many times the airflow of the factory configuration keeping the factory PS cool and the rest of the unit cool as well.

Nice slick install and your "added" installation changes makes for a better job in my opinion, so well done! But sadly the problem I see is that the cost of such a repair is pretty cost prohibitive based on current resale value of these radios. Maybe someone will come up with an AVR "replacement" board to use the existing transformer along with fan upgrade. Thanks Buddy for the video!

I wouldn't put a switching power supply with all it's RFI inside an HF transceiver. I think you will pick up QRM at regular spacings on the dial.
@barryf5479
@barryf5479 2 жыл бұрын
Guessing it went from an analog power supply to a switcher. They can get away with smaller capacitors and don't have the pass transistor power dissipation which likely caused a lot of the heat. You had me worried when you were disconnecting all of those wires/cables but the AVR markings made it easy to reconnect. Looks like you've done one of these before. I'd be a lot slower on a first time because I'd be afraid I'd mess something up.

Barry, Honestly this is the first time I have installed this particular kit. However I am fully formiliar with the old suupply in these rigs. Cannot count how many I have had to remove and rebuild. This was a fun project to attempt and I like the results. Thanks for the comment

Great Video as always. Got a question not pertaining to this video but the newer rigs. I have a Yaesu Ft-450D that I would like to align but all the alignment tools I have are too big. My question...... Is there a new set of tools for aligning modern radios or do I have to whittle new ones. The tuning cans are so small and I cannot find a place to buy the tools that are needed to do it. Wasn't sure if I missed something but again no site I can find sells those alignment tools. Thanks Buddy for all you do to help everyone and love every video. 73 ad0am

The purists must be spluttering - a switch-mode power supply INSIDE the rig? From your observations does it add any noise in the receiver or does it work just fine?
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 2 жыл бұрын
I will say it is hard to beat old iron. But since the original PSU id problematic, it is nice to have a good replacement. I listen on 40 meters last night and noted no switch mode noise. More investigation is needed though.

Putting a Switching Supply in an HF xcvr does it cause any internal RF interference? Or output signal purity?

I have a Kenwood Ts-940s and I'm pulling my hair out trying to fix it. I was hoping someone had seen this problem, a google search turns up nothing. Recieve is fine but it doesn't transmit. I mean it doesn't even switch over. With PTT Still receives and does nothing, no TX indicator. All supply voltages looks good. Pressing the send Button does the same thing. Any info would be appreciated!
