This is done great advice, thanks for the video. My CDL test is tomorrow morning. I can't say that checking the clearance of lines close the tires while they are turned either way is something we were taught to look at, but I will be doing that with my future employers truck.

I have seen this happen on Peterbilts too. Same exact issue. I had them shorten the hoses so they don't come even close to Comming in contact with the tire. I don't know why Paccar won't fix this issue on their Pete's & KW'S. Great video, may save someone's life !

If your fuel filter assembly is frame rail mounted, check your clearance by cranking your wheels all the way to the left, see if it clears the hoses coming off, another newer kenworth problem I’ve had

Part of it. Learning. Spring holding my trailer airline's up,near tandems. Air lines cut from dragging. Brakes were smoking before I stopped. You don't notice running 70 and at night. A driver flagged me just in time.

Never should of left the first rest area if you thought there was a problem until you knew what was wrong. That hose could easily be moved away from the tire by turning the fitting at either end.

I bought a brand new W900L back in 2007 and when I got it home I was doing a complete inspection of the truck top to bottom and when I got under the truck I had airhoses rubbing the driveshaft and there was about 4 or 5 hoses that I had to adjust away from tires and driveshafts. Kenworth needs to get on the final inspections better it seems. But that steer hose you should have seen it rubbing before it blew.

Been driving since 68. I learned to never drive with a fast leak. Even if you have to get help, you find that leak and fix it. Not only your life is at stake. Then again, I always had lots of tools and extra biscuits for tractor and trailer both. I kept and still do an assortment of hose clamps among other things. I don't worry about weight just having a used hose, such as a radiator hose stuck back along with some old inner tube for emergency repair.

I see allot of good suggestions on how you as the driver can easily correct the problem and from a rookies perspective they are all valuable which is great "but " at this day and age there should be no truck manufacturers turning out this kind of poor workmanship, period ! No driver should have to be taking corrective measures to a brand new truck in order to go down the road safely. This video is well appreciated .

Thank you for your reply. I agree 100%. There are allot of company's out there that have large fleet of trucks that are driven by different drivers every day of the week and something like that issue could easily be overlooked by any amount of them. In general drivers today are challenged with such a diverse magnitude of responsibilities that most people have no idea of and are totally ignorant to the extent of professionalism that's actually required of them. Overseeing quality control and manufacturer standards should certainly not be one of them .

I found the first 2minutes 30 seconds to be real painful to watch. But found kenworths fix to be outright disgraceful. The fact that they made no effort to prevent it happening again is not only shockingly incompetent but to display such little regard to their customer is shameful. Amazing to think that you live in a country safeguards itself constantly with the most futile warning / caution labels to cover their backs whilst simultaneously willingly allowing you to wear out an airline on your steer tyre like it isn't a worry!

If the tech doing the work isn’t aware that routing was a problem before he did the repair, he properly did the repair. If he knew that the hose routing was a problem, then any tech would have rectified the issue. Communicating clearly the hidden issue usually solves problems, whether between the customer and the service writer or the service writer and the shop foreman or the foreman to the tech doing the work. Ive had Kenworth dealers work on my trucks with very good ($$$) results. Won’t be switching

I wonder who did the PDI on that truck! that hose routing should have been noticed then without even having to turn the wheels from straight ahead! the suggestion of turning the elbow on the abs valve -you want to make sure it does not make the hose too short in a left turn position.

I’m running a graphic shop here in Eastern Canada, had the Kenworth dealer bring me a brand new rig (W900L) for a job. Being the son of an old truck driver, I always look around to see how truck are set up / assembled / adjusted. That day I found out the same exact problem but on driver side. The unit had less than 100 miles on it and I could noticed a major rub that ruined the exterior wire sheath. I’ve let their jockey know ‘bout that but he didn’t seems surprized (...) Is it a major issue (design or assembly)? Damn...

Marc I've seen that common problem. What I do is make a custom hose with spring ends & turn those fittings up a lil bit to where there not pointing down so much. I'm in VA off 95 exit 31. I know the truck is under warranty but if KW won't resolve the issue for not much I can make you up a hose to correct the problem. Those factory hoses are a joke

My question to you is, since the brake pedal relieves pressure from the line. Why did it only leak when the pedal was applied? Shouldn’t it leak more when the pressure is highest (in rolling mode or parked)
@marcanthonystorm

The brake lines do not have pressure in them until you apply the brakes otherwise there is no air in the brake line
@JP-ou8yb

This could be fixed with a 90 degree brass fitting faced upward from the inner side of hose where it attaches by frame with some nylon tape for sealer, this would allow hose to stand upward then check for rubbing in both directions of steering. This part you could probably find at Home Depot, Lowes or a plumbing store.

There's a fabric ply inside those hoses, and there's a kind of natural bend that those hoses want to curve to, and should be put on to go with that ''ply bend'' so to speak. I've had many get worn in the area that's ''pinched'' even tho it really isn't pinched, but that's where a hole will develop. Every Pete or KW that I've had have done it and trailers too! And have ALL the brake lines be installed that way and you'll get much longer service life out of every hose! BTW, Carry a spare like I always did...cheap insurance!

Breezy Lynn hey Lynn thanks for commenting . If you watched the video you would see that the hose is worn underneath and only touches when the tire is turned. Crank that fitting 1/4 turn clockwise on the pot....that'll pull the hose inboard enough to clear the tire..turning the other fitting will loosen it unless it has a lock nut you can snug back up (which it may)...Sucks to have bs stuff like that on a new truck and then a shoemaker doing the repair.

I had a brake line blow a part while stopping at a red light in a loaded dump truck. The horn went off instantly! Secondary air went to zero. The truck wasn't stopping so I hit the turn lane that luckily no one was in and got stopped just in the nick of time. The truck would have locked itself down when air in the primary got to 65ish but that would have been too late. So next time that happens I'm gonna be ready to pull the brake button 10 4? Remember that! Pull the brake button . That should be taught. What are you gonna do when you hit the brakes secondary air goes to zero and the air alarm goes off? Pull the brake button if necessary to keep from ramming someone. Ever how many air chambers you have that's how many potential lines can blow and cause this. There are other places as well, valves etc. Also I use zip ties to try and keep lines from rubbing.

Use some zip ties and zip tie the hose away from the tire not a perfect fix but in a pinch that will get you down the road without it rubbing anymore
@Harley04
@Harley04 5 жыл бұрын
it's not rubbing ALL the times, eg. driving straight, ONLY when full lock right turn, speed can't be very high while turning, so take a lot of turning to rub through that hose.

ZIps tie don't work, as soon as the line is pressurized the zips ties will break. Freightliner FLDs and Classic's been doing this for years. Dot is well informed and Freightliner is well informed of it to. I put an 45 degree extension on the the end of hose where it goes into the brake chamber. Problem solved.

I have been watching scotlynn lately and they seem to be spending quite a bit of money on new equipment, couple years ago it was a few yellow 389 Pete’s and now w900 thrown into the mix. Good company hauler for with good brokers and very decent pay on the loads as a O/O with own authority. May hook up with them again, but working on getting a newer truck.....w900 or a 389 would be sweet.

Silly thing here is, they could've came off the block a little nicer, and the hose obviously doesn't need to be that long...shorten them up, and it will go straight to the block without impeding room for the tire...weird

Matt Sprenkle thanks for the input but it’s possible for somethings to go unnoticed. As for getting my hands and my back dirty I do climb under the truck. It’s how I caught the air leak in the Pete 389 I had because an air line was rubbing against metal under the driver side but I didn’t post that video. Thanks again for comment. This was posted to help others be aware and yes pre trip carefully.

I was close to home. I did stop at home and delayed the delivery one day. The truck was in the shop the next morning. It was evening when the incident took place. It was drivable under average spends and no excessive braking. All went well but I’m going back to shop to reduce the hose. Or maybe look at it in the morning to reposition myself if possible. Thanks for watching and commenting.

If you tighten the 45 degree fitting on the brake chamber it will move the hose away from the tire. $15 part takes five minutes to change why didn’t you change it.

Paccar line assembly will not change the install procedure until a change order is competed; that won't happen until engineering evaluates and recommends; that won't happen until safety directive is issued and reviewed and, finally, there will be training for the assembly workers, followed by final review and sign-off. There's a liability concern with every part and procedure. Looks like a temp fix would be zip ties to pull that loop down and inward just enough for small clearance. Adding the layer of cushion just delays but guarantees another failure. A driver would have to check it every day. Finally, there are moms & kids in cars driving along side that KW. Not good.

So basically just wait until someone gets killed, and then they'll evaluate the issue. It's a shame that it takes a human life to get a safety hazard fixed.

All part of a normal daily pre and post trip inspection. If you care about your own safety. You as a driver would catch this every time. Before that truck is ever driven. It’s a simple fix. Get a wrench and turn the fittings to move air hose away from tire. Just rapping the hose. May protect the hose. But cause a worn area on tire sidewalk causing a weakness in the tire and a potential blow out of a steering tire. And a potential catastrophic wreck
@marcanthonystorm
@marcanthonystorm 5 жыл бұрын
Hey brother I do care very much. I did a video showing the proper way to solve the problem which is turn the fittings upward so the hose is not in the path of the tire. Thank you for the advice. The problem was solved shortly after I made this video last September. Thank you for watching. Washington DC has launched an investigation about the assembly of the hose because of this video. I posted about that too.

Air line that close should have been caught in pre delivery. Then again in pre trips. And when replaced, the parts changer (NOT A MECHANIC) should have caught and turned the fitting, made sure there was not another clearance problem. Parts changers, if the scanner doesn't tell them, they don't know it!

That would be a great idea if the hose was stationary. It moves because the brake chamber moves when you turn the steering wheel. I fixed it by moving the fittings inward. Now it’s good. Thank you for the advice.
