I traveled from Kenya to Uganda to meet my Ugandan Luo brother from Acholi Mr. Okoth. We did the interview along river Nile using our mother tongue. #Luo #Kenya #Uganda #Acholi #nile
This marks the beginning of my long journey to find my Luo brothers and sisters in Nigeria, Eritrea, Chad, Cameroon, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Egypt, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Central African Republic (CAR).
The Luo are a Nilotic group of people who migrated from Bahr-el-Ghazal in Southern Sudan, and settled in the western part of Kenya in areas around Lake Victoria. They arrived into this part of East Africa from as early as the 15th century to the 19th century. They arrived in various groups:
The Joka Jok arrived in the 15th century and settled at Ramogi hill, Sakwa, Asembo and Alego.
The Joka Owiny led by Owiny Sigoma came in the 17th century and settled around Kisumu, Nyakach and South Nyanza.
The Joka Omolo came into Kenya from Busoga in Uganda in the 18th century. They settled in Samia, Yimbo, and South Nyanza where they joined the group that had arrived earlier.
The last group to arrive was the Luo-Abasuba who arrived from Uganda in the 19th century, and settled in Rusinga and Mfangano islands in Lake Victoria. They are a mixture of Bantus and Luos.
The Luo probably originated at Wau in southern Sudan, near the confluence of the Meride and Sue Rivers. The Luo migrated into western Kenya via today’s eastern Uganda, the first wave arriving sometime around 1500AD.
Oral traditions reveal that the Southern Luo (the Luo of Kenya and Tanzania) descended from early fishing, agricultural and herding communities from western Kenya’s early pre-colonial history and dialects of their language have historic roots across the inter-lacustrine region. Besides their language has incorporated Bantu words making it different from the Ugandan Luo dialects, Dholuo is the mother tongue of the Luo community. There is only one major Luo dialect in Kenya, with minor variations of Luo language especially between the Alego / Ugenya / Gem locality, known as Trans Yala dialect by socio-linguist, and the standard Dholuo dialect which is largely spoken by the rest of the Luo people in Kenya and the neighboring Tanzania.
Uganda is home for Luo ethnic groups of (1) Acholi, (2) Adhola, and the assimilated Luo groups of (3) Lango and (4) Kumam. It is also assumed to be the possible first entrance that Luos of Sudan used to further migrate to Kenya, Tanzania and the Democratic republic of Congo.
Dispersion from the Nilotic homeland in South Sudan was presumably triggered by the turmoils of the Muslim conquest of Sudan.
Education is highly valued among the Luo, and they are well represented in the professions.
The Luo-speaking peoples include the following sub-groups:
1. Shilluk/ Ochollo - South Sudan / Ethiopia
2. Anuang’/ Anywaa - Ethiopia / South Sudan
3. Maban - South Sudan / Chad
4. Thuri / Shatt - South Sudan
5. Blanda Bor - South Sudan
6. Funj - South Sudan
7. Pari - South Sudan
8. Bari - South Sudan
9. Jumjum - South Sudan
10. Joluo / Jur Chol - South Sudan
11. Acholi - Uganda / South Sudan
12. Kumam - Uganda
13. Chope - Uganda
14. Tooro - Uganda
15. Lang’i - Uganda
16. Jonam - Uganda
17. Jo-Padhola - Uganda
18. Alur - Uganda / DRC / Cameroon
19. Suba Luo - Kenya
18. Joluo - Kenya / Tanzania
The Luo-speakers alongside the Dinka (Jieng’) and the Nuer (Naath) form part of the Jii-speakers.

I believe the Luos were counting with their fingers from 1 to 5 then they would continue to six as abichiel....as in one after five....or simply put base 5. Then 7 would be abiriyo...this is standard to date. Where abiriyo is just abich ariyo

I saw another guy interviewing Luos from different countries and it seems like it is the Luos in Kenya who got lost in the counting. It was said that we started out counting in fives, therefore six becoming related to one, seven related to two. I can't remember but I think eight was connected to three and nine was related to four, and then ten.

@@SGOA32178 There is a difference between Lwo and Luo. Luo is just a small ethnic extraction from the larger Lwo community. Our Kenyan people keep forcing this thing, trying to make the entire Lwo to be identified as Luo. That is as good as a Kikuyu trying to claim they are the same as the Luhya, Kisii, Giriama etc. Chad and CAR has some distant Lwo people. People who have been to central Africa have reported to have met small communities who can interpret Luo words well.
@allan8877

It is also difficult to understand why Nigerian tribes have names like Odera, Ogwedhi etc. In fact there is a Nigerian tribe that calls their supreme beings "obong'" which is the same for Luos where Obong'o means God. DId you know Nigerians have the name Opio to mean the first male twin? Here in Kenya Opiyo means the same. Those are the grey areas in tracing the Luo, but I believe there are no Luos in Nigeria.

@@allan8877 this is still not an answer. This is like telling me also that because there are many migrant kikuyu in Boston USA means it is part of their central kenya homeland. Yes, indeed kenyan luos love forcing things, a trait uncommon amongst other lwo. Once i tried in vain telling one that Dinka and Nuer aren't lwo but this trait made proper debate futile. Did you know that the same person had never heard of jopadhola and Alur, our closest kin in uganda????Some guys even claim Igbos in SE Nigeria are luos merely on account of the prevalence of names beginning with O. Its just a nonsense argument IMO.

How do you explain the similarity of Luo and Igbo names such as Yuke, Onyiema, Olawa and many more. I have spent the last forty years interacting closely with educated Igbos and many say they migrated from the northeastern part of the continent. Not to forget, their high intelligence points to that of the Luo.

@@maureenogaye7323 Not even worried about that counting, the main thing is they are Ateker. Some people have lost identities completely e.g. the blacks in America but these two ethnic groups Langi and Kumam can still trace their origin. There is no need to force their grouping into Luo/Lwo, not in this day and age. As for Langi they have deceived us for too long, enough is enough- you google Lango master plan.
