Kenya Protests: President Ruto Vows Retaliation Against Criminals Who "Hijacked" Tax Hike Protests
In Kenya, protests against the new finance bill that introduces unpopular tax hike proposals. Police and protesters clashed in demonstrations over the controversial new finance bill, which reportedly left at least five people dead and about 40 people injured. There have been reports of people being wounded as police fired rounds to disperse the crowds. During the protests, part of the Kenyan parliament was set alight after protesters breached the complex. Hundreds of MPs were unable to leave the building and reportedly took cover in the basement. Kenyan President William Ruto has blamed the clashes on "criminals" who he says have "hijacked" the protests. President Ruto has vowed a "full response" to the violence.
