Kenya's President William Ruto is on a state visit to the United States. President Ruto is the first African leader to be hosted for a state visit since US President Joe Biden was elected in 2020. Ruto and Biden will meet for a state dinner at the White House on May 23. Kenya is a key US ally in eastern Africa and the two nations share strong military cooperation as the war in east Africa against Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Shabab intensifies. Talks between Kenya's and US Presidents will also focus on debt relief for the African nation. One of Washington's objectives in scheduling the high-profile visit by the Kenyan President is to counter China's rising influence in Africa. China is Kenya's biggest creditor and the African nation has been grappling with liquidity challenges. Watch this video for details.

And the interesting part, is in this visit there is a US commitment to send billions of $ under the Chips and Science Act for developing Kenya's domestic capacity to develop, assemble, and test semi-conductors for US market. A little like Taiwan. Seems they are eyeing the minerals. But they don't see Kenya like past administrations used to see African countries. It has been their strategy since covid and Ukraine war to look to diversify their supply chains (knowing that Taiwan conflict would heat up at some point). They are already trying India (though it seems too pro-Russian for them), and they are looking for a partner for that in Africa and there is only one that ticks their boxes in terms of foreign policy.

And you are an idiot if you don’t see that all that comes with a huge price. China goes to these third world countries and builds up their infrastructure, but it isn’t free. China lends them the money to make those improvements and when the country cannot repay those loans, they basically take control of the country’s natural resources as payment. At least with the US, they would get the improvements and not have to pay back any money, especially with Biden in office. He has spent more money on other counties than any other president while turning his back on his own people.

Infrastructure is the most important area of cooperation and anyone who gives loans or grants in this area is important to us. Had it not been the coming of the Chinese, infrastructure would have totally collapsed . The west said we can't pay big loans for infrastructure, but Chinese said you can pay, you have recourses. Imagine someone telling you are not credit worth while you have diamonds in your backyard. China is a friend in need, he told us, you are not poor. While we go to China for business, we go to US as beggars.
