In Kenya, a state created barely a century ago, Afua Hirsch explores how the British spun an idealised stereotype while carving out a brutal empire. Afua reveals the extremes of life today, the urban sprawl and untouched outback, and a young population still pushing away the lingering darkness of the British imperial past.

I'm an Indian and I've had the good fortune to live in and explore Kenya. I really, really love the people and the food and culture. Everyone is so polite and soft spoken. The food is simply delicious. I was sad to have to leave for personal reasons. But I'll always cherish the time I spent in Kenya. If I'm blessed with good fortune, I'll be really keen to visit some other countries in Africa and really explore the places. Thankfully I was presented with opportunities to visit deep and remote parts of Kenya so I had the privilege of really talking to and befriending some Kenyans, not just falling into the tourist circles

I recall sitting in a cinema years ago (with an ever-tightening chest) in the former island colony of Trinidad, watching the movie "Out of Africa", as it showcased some of the indignities and atrocities of British colonialism. But hearing Meryl Streep (as Karen Blixen) refer to the indigenous people as "My Kikuyu"... now THAT almost turned my tension-headache into a stroke! 🤔

I'm still perplexed when I meet Kenyans who don't know slave trade started in East African. Its conveniently left out of a lot of the history studies here. Most of history starts with colonization because that's when border demarcation happened. The Ottoman slave trade likely started in 14th century didn't end until mid 18th century.

I've enjoyed this clip. Whenever white people have gone into another country, the people of that country have suffered greatly. The true history was told in the clip of how Africa was taken over. And how the people of Africa were pushed around and forced to do what the whites wanted them to do. The people of Africa have stood strong and they have kept their languages and culture. The art of Africa shows the dept and beauty of Africa.

Kenya is a multicultural country and what funny is there is a large region called north eastern belong to somali community but when ever is talked about Kenya is like they don’t exist that is pure racism on the other hand ethiopia there is a region called Ogaden belong to somali but when documentaries talk about cultural ethnic ethiopia they never add that Somali region it’s like invisible this will only generate hate and Make them feel they are not Kenyans or Ethiopian and you know what will follow my point is create a community where all are respected equally and loved 😍

Many other places of significance were left out, why do you consider somali ans somalian issues a priority? You are suffering from the same disease you are condemning. No documentary can cover a whole nation, its whole history and its complications in a day, not even a year! Give the presenter a break, she touched on significant issues, politely and with respect. There shall be other documentaries.

@@eileen1820 Africans never asked western Europeans to come and bring their "ingenuity and infrastructure" to Africa. They were happily and contented living in their continent, in their African ways. They (Western Europeans) just assumed we needed their "ingenuity" and so they began.. But Africans where protesting throughout the process of delivering ingenuity. Let me put it this way, if we could choose to go back to how we where before "European ingenuity and infrastructure" , we would go back right away and keep our African systems, languages, religion, names, Artefacts and millions of our people who where shipped out.
