KEPCO E&C's APR1400 Nuclear Power Plant PR video.
APR1400 is a next-generation type nuclear power plant developed by improving OPR1000, which is the Korea’s major power plant model. It was developed through the government-led G-7 Project from December 1992 to December 2001. KEPCO E&C was in charge of technology development in A/E and NSSSD.
APR1400 was first applied in building Shin-Kori Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 & 4 in August 2006, and afterwards, total of 6 plants - Shin-Hanul Units 1 & 2, Shin-Kori Units 5 & 6, and Shin-Hanul Units 3 & 4 - are being constructed. In particular, in 2009, it is applied to UAE BNPP Units 1-4, the first export model of Korean nuclear power plant, and is currently being constructed.
Meanwhile, with the successful exportation of APR1400 to UAE, to strengthen international status and competitiveness even more, KEPCO E&C, KEPCO, and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) signed a joint agreement, and are trying to obtain Design Certification (DC) from Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of the U.S.A. Design Certification (DC) is a system to obtain certification for safety in advance from the regulatory agency regarding the standard design of certain reactor types. In March 2015, it has passed the preliminary review of the Design Certification(DC) from Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and is now being reviewed. After the review is finished and safety evaluation procedure is completed by September 2018, public hearing and deliberation process will be followed, and we are expecting to obtain Design Certification (DC) in May 2019. After the APR1400 Design Certification (DC) is completed, the exportation competitiveness in the foreign market including the U.S.A. will be enhanced and the exportation of the follow-up nuclear plant to the UAE nuclear power plants will become more active.

Kepco should be very proud about their reactors. Very few companies have so advanced reactor and are capable of building them without delays or going over budget. I will do whatever possible to get one in my country. Previous government had talks with Westinghouse which isn't known for bulding in the same way, or even finishing the projects. Beside, Kepco is continuously improving designs. I really want to see APR1400 here!

The 34.212 tons of spent fuel generated in one year by one 1400MW reactor can fuel 36 1GW Molten Salt Reactors for one year. 940 kg of natural thorium in a Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) can generate 1 gigawatt (GW) of electricity for one year. The 259.784 tons of unused depleted uranium processed to obtain the 34.216 tons of enriched uranium can fuel 276 1GW Molten Salt Reactors for one year.

APR1400 is way cheaper: 4 units (1345 MW net output) in Barakah are at $24.4bn. This is 4.54 $/W. The cheapest EPR I know of is Olkiluoto with €11bn construction cost -> $11.85. It outputs 1600 MW. So this is 7.41 $/W. But hold your hat. Vogtle is at 15.7 $/W. Completely crazy. I don't know how KEPCO is so much better and why not everyone is building APR1400s. Because with 4.5 $/W you end up with 70 $/MWh (50 year runtime, 6% interest). in EU that's quite competitive and wind+PV+battery+back-up are far from achieving this. It feels like the nuclear industry is its own biggest enemy...

And built in aproximately 5 years. Westinghouse needs like 15 years to build their AP1000, IF they finish at all. Kepco proved this many times.

@@Signal_Glow For comparison Over 10 years and 12 billion for the EPR2 (1600 Mw) But Epr2 can survive of Hydrogen blast and have a corium recuperator. The walls are so thick that it is already a Sarcophagus. France having built a mock containment ensainte to test the resistance of the materials, they designated a really solid ensainte. The reactor has a better efficiency in fuel consumption, but this comes at the cost of great complexity. complexity, even too great a complexity which explodes the costs (like having a pressurization at 300 bar) The reactor vessel) also a design fault in vibration (to be reviewed) For my part I think that the best would be to have the safety of the EPR 2 but without necessarily having its performance and its complexity. A reactor halfway between the EPR2 and Korean nuclear reactors. Safety is still important, the nuclear disaster cost the Japanese more than 200 billion and it's not over... Not to mention the ecological and health impact (which remains difficult to assess exactly)

I hope the South-Korean Govt will invest in APR-1000 Reactors to meet its Energy goals. If SK-Govt won't support its Nuclear-industry then it won't be possible for South-Korea to sell its Nuclear reactors to foreign countries. South-Korea must consider to form a JV with Russia for Construction & Full T-o-T of "BN-800" FBRs.

Kepco is known to build reactors in time while sticking to the budget. National project is a bit different because same country finances and builds it, if anything goes wrong with financing it will delay finishing of the project.

Doing anything nuclear with Russia is out of question at the moment. I wish too they made one new generation reactor together, as i understand it Russian engineer first thought and wrote about MSRE, they also had many firsts in this field. Russia will likely focus on Asian market a lot more than before, big loss for us but great for you.

After the war with Russia, Ukraine will build nuclear power plants rated at 1900MW ,this means fewer reactors in all . Ukraine aims at 80 percent of energy to be nuclear and 20 percent renewables and only coal used for steel making. France has a design for 1600MW so a 1900MW is possible so in all 22 nuclear power plants to be built no worries about money it will be payed by Russia as war reparations so the whole energy project will cost somewhere between 240 and 270 billion dollars. Kepco and Enerhoatom could be partners in this project so around 2024 this project could be started.

I think they signed a deal with Westinghouse for the AP1000 units. Both the EPR and the AP1000 have operating units. Both are PWRs with similarities to PWRs built since the 1960s. The sooner they repel the Russian invaders the better for the world. I am half a world away and this war affects me. The only war we need is that against global warming.😊

Awfully similar construction to Three Mile Island power plant. Edit: yep, APR-1400 was developed from OPR-1000, which in turn was developed from Babcock & Wilcox reactor, the same type that was used in Three Mile Island.

The OPR-1000 was directly based on the Combustion Engineering System 80/80+ design. The System 80+ was a revolutionary PWR design. It also helped with the development of the AP1000.

Basics are similar but safety features a lot more advanced. Even simple metal alloys got way better in the last 50 years. This is not some 2nd generation reactor like others at the end of lifetime. Calculations show they are orders of magnitude safer, add better computers, monitoring, knowledge from accidents like TMI and you get APC1400...
@nedward.7442
@nedward.7442 9 ай бұрын
The accident at Three Mile Island was not due to the design of the reactor. Moreover, although it looks similar to him in appearance, it is not at all due to the containment.
