@TheFridge

Yes, it actually happened. The local council was rather annoyed that there were space debris falling in its area, stating that there could have been loss of life, and/or property damage (it nuked some grass in some farmer's paddock) so they took any action they could, and issued a fine to NASA for the space debris they left laying around. Others say that the fine was issued as a tongue-in-cheek gesture at NASA. Either way, last I knew, the fine had not been paid, but I also doubt the local council's ability to prosecute the offence either :P

OH god, I'm an idiot. I'd been watching a lot of archived NASA Apollo development films and there was one that went into great detail about Skip re-entry to help control the cross range accuracy and limit the heating. It made so much sense that I guess I ended up taking that as the reality of the situation. Doh! I didn't do all my research....

On my first Mun flyby, I ran out of fuel before I could get my return trajectory low enough to re-enter (around 50k m). I did 5 laps around Kerbin, each time skipping in and out of the atmosphere until it slowed me down enough to land. My ablator (1.25 m) was at 25% when i landed. LOL.

In fact, with some tricky camera work you can see stages in orbit at 30km while landed on the Mun. I also noticed how debris doesn't get deleted when falling back to Kerbin during launch and the sounds/explosions you are hearing are actually those parts hitting the ground.

Hi Scott - as far as I can tell from Apollo mission reports and later AIAA papers studying skip re-entry for Orion, a skip re-entry capability for Apollo was developed, but never used. Maybe you're thinking of Apollo's capability for a lifting re-entry, using the offset center of gravity to get a certain amount of lift to add crossrange during entry.

@timothymclean

Ships don't "glow red hot" except via re-entry effects (which don't actually cause heating) or by being fired (which only affects rocket nozzles).

I think that the fine controls doesn't actually limit how much you can pitch or yaw or roll, they just make it slower to get to the maximum torque. So it wouldn't matter if you had the fine controls on or off, if the arrow thing is all the way at the top, that's how much you'll be able to pitch.

Going from orbit into the atmosphere is basically like driving your car with the breaks on. They will burn up because there is one force pulling you into the atmosphere while you're trying to penetrate a shell keeping you out. Basically. At least that's how it was explained to me.

just to clarify your theory on the atmosphere specific burn color streams, the reason you see that burn stream for earth is because it is burning the oxygen from the super heated hull by the friction, now take an argon rich atmosphere, now you have a blue flame.

I think the game didn't delete parts from your disintegrated spacestation because, if you notice, they had spaceship symbols on the map, and it doesn't delete those even when you get over 2km away. I'm guessing it deleted all the little parts that might've fallen off like struts and girders (if those even survived the landing haha). Does that sound like a good hypothesis?

I think Jool's supposed to be a gas giant (it's the analogue for Jupiter), so there's obviously no way to actually land on it 'cos there's no land. It would be liquid if you went down far enough because of the pressure, but your spaceship would get crushed by that point (which is probably why the game makes your ship explode when you try it).
@BFGfreak
@BFGfreak 11 жыл бұрын
Excellent lithobraking in the end. Anyway concerning low altitude debris, all the debris I saw had command elements on them (either a command pod or mechjeb) so I think the game doesn't delete those and simply gets rid of things that cannot be controlled. Finally how did you manage to get the old KIA screen back?
