Your rocket tipped over because it was bigger on top than on bottom. It's like an arrow, the fletching stabilize things because it creates drag at the back, so it naturally seeks to stay pointed forward. Your rocket has more drag in the front, it's like a backwards arrow, it's going to seek to turn around. This is actually a big problem with procedural fairings combined with Far, they tend to give the cargo too much room, creating wide upper stages that have a tendency to want to tip over. You exacerbated the problem heavily by throwing that wide thing on there. Your other rocket was stable because the drag from the side engines and wingtips counterbalanced that from the oversized fairing load.

From what I saw looking online at the pegasus mission, they used both a B52 and a slightly modified Lockheed L1011 airliner. Either way, pretty neat stuff.

I also did a little reading, the Pegasus was launched from approx. 40,000 feet which is less than the maximum operating altitude of the L1011 and the B52. Cheers!

I think the final version of the game should include the ability to use custom fairings; just making them really expensive is all you'd need to do to make them balanced.

Your videos generally have a good balance of gameplay and actual space chat, but I was a little disappointed you didn't talk about the world's only commercial plane launched space system. It's a marvel of engineering despite it having very specific mission scope.

That's what I was wondering about too. Perhaps, when you go to the Weekly page, you enter some kind of time portal that takes you a few hours into the future. The portal's sole purpose being letting us watch kick ass Scott Manley videos before they're released. I'm fine with that.

You're talking about the fairing factory. That was a separate web app that would create special fairings for you to use. This is a completely new mod that was just released. :)

I think one of the main reasons for planes yawing on the runway is the landing gear being angled. When the gear is pointing straight down it tends to be a lot more stable for me.

They are the so called Lagrangian points. " The Lagrange points mark positions where the combined gravitational pull of the two large masses provides precisely the centripetal force required to orbit with them." There is quite a detailed explanation of Wikipedia! Sixty symbols also has a video explaining it quite well.

I don't know if the programmers are in the habit of adding aspects of mods to the base game, but I'd love to see them incorporate those fairings. Very cool feature.

I think that the decrease in stability when using the fairings is a result of the lower density of the upper end of the rocket. If there is a lot of empty space inside the fairing, then it would be like having a big solid balloon on top.

Not possible, because KSP only uses a 1 body system. You can fake L4 and L5 if you want, but they're not stable.

Wow this thing has come a long way, this looks pretty great now! Last I've heard of it (or maybe it was a predecessor?) it would generate parts for you to use, not adapt dynamically. This is just awesome, when did THAT happen and why did I miss it? But to be honest, I love the fairings in KW Rocketry. I do assume you've exaggerated how hard you think they are to use for dramatic effect (just turn on symmetry before snapping the top in place) ;) Also, thanks for all the great vids/entertainment!

fun fact, the airstrip at KSC isn't pointing exactly equitorial, yet you start at 90 degrees, so you always go off the runway if you don't turn right a bit... I should probably see if that's a known issue, actually.

There's a new mod on the forum that lets you make solid boosters in a more modular fashion, maybe that would give you more control with the Pegasus launch :D

its actually a real world phenomenon caused by the engines all rotating the fans in the same direction. happens on almost all aircraft.

The reason Pegasus is pulling to the left is because of B9 cockpit. I've noticed it on quite a few airplanes.

Versions past 0.18 (I think) have hypersonic and reentry air effects. No actual reentry overheating, though. Yet. Ferram Aerospace Research makes them happen more often.

Actually, with Ferram Aerospace, assuming the fairings are labeled properly in their config, they will remove the drag from any part they are covering, as far as I can tell.

Scott, is it possible that the plane turns to the left during take-off due to the real world effect of maxing out your engine? I know that these were turbine engines and the real world effect is mainly associated with propeller planes.

The a-symmetrical liftoff with the Pegasus launcher might not be because of the plane design! Staging with throttle at full for jet/atmospheric engines doesn't work well (some fire slightly sooner, building thrust faster), try staging/activating them first, then throttling up.

Hey Scott, may i recommend TouhouTorpedo's modular Multiwheels mod? it adds lots of fantastic wheels for larger aircraft, and could save a lot of parts for your Pegasus launch jet :)

If you mean how to duplicate parts in VAB or SPH press "alt+left click" to duplicate the part,if u mean symmetry then press "X" or click the yellow symmetry button on the bottom left.

You can switch between vehicles and active EVA's by pressing "[" and "]" ("[" cycles forward and "]" cycles backwards).

FYI, the 1.0 version of the mod you're using doesn't support FAR, but the mod author added the 1.1 update yesterday which does have FAR support.

Wait, so how does Ferram Aerospace work without a mesh designed to simulate the aerodynamics model specifically? Does it use something like the lighting engine to test if something is aerodynamic or not? I think that's what deadly reentry uses. But if you can use any part you want from any mod pack, it must not have to have it's own specific type of model for aerodynamics. How do it work?

The tendency for your plane to veer is not a symmetry issue. Your rear landing gear are too far back, and as the fulcrum, they are taking too much weight, add more rear landing gear with the wheel's axis lining up, or move your gear to just behind CG, preferably both.

I prefer NovaPunch's fairings; they're a little more intuitive and flexible than the KW fairings and they look awesome when they decouple.

For what ever reason i find planes like to turn left or right on a run way when they have symetrical wheels like that. when there is more of a tri-cycle style used they tend to be more stable. Not sure if its the case but changing the landing gear as such made the same plane design not turn during take off for me.

A shame you didn't show the Procedural Fairings with very wide payloads. It can do that pretty well, it looks a bit odd, but works great :D

Do nose cones in KSP actually improve aerodynamics? Or are they just for aesthetics? I have always questioned using them encase they increase weight and don't actually do anything. An answer will be so helpful for me in designing rockets in KSP.
