I was there. I almost died during the push back in GnR. It was terrifying. The whole sway of the crowd and being trapped and pinned by the bodies, you couldn't move. I started slipping down in the mud and went down with at least 5 people on top of me and face down in the mud. I guy called Nigel, a photographer from Nottingham pulled me out. Saved my life. I've never been so scared in my life. I had no way of saving myself. I was 17. I am on that cover, but it's hard to see me, a tiny head, with ginger hair. RIP both the poor Scottish lads. I'll never forget that day.

What a tragedy that was! I went to the Dutch MOR in Tilburg. That was an awesome day: we didn’t have GNR and Megadeth, but got Great White instead. It was my first big metal concert and what a great one to start with!

This is cool to watch these. I didn't buy many Kerrang! Magazines but I sure do like see this. A time before the internet. This is timeless in my eyes. Love seeing that Anthrax Don't Make Me Laugh, never seen that artwork before. Looks awesome.

This is interesting to see what the aftermath of the Donington disaster was like. My dad and his mates were there, but they were lucky enough to not be involved. I remember my dad saying they were late getting home and my nan was worried sick, as it was even on national news and there was no phones back then. It sounded like Kerrang were papering over the cracks, of course people only started "slam dancing" at that one festival, not since the birth of Rock music! How blinkered they were back then.

So there was no moshing going on in 1987 when Anthrax we're whipping up the crowd with their hit single Caught In a Slam Dance?! A free filofax for students from Barclays, gotta love the 1980s!! Always enjoy a good 80s mag flick through.

That was my first concert at 17 years old, I recall GNR being a huge deal at the time & there was great excitement when they took to the stage, my friends and I got caught in the surge near the front of the stage, somehow with the help of others we were lucky enough to get out of there & get to a safe place, a really frightening experience, a screen at the side of the stage also came loose in the wind which added to the chaos & the band stopped a couple of times, at the time we just carried on and had a fun day, all the bands were great, even Kiss, it wasn't until the next day we found out the tragic news, frantic calls were made home to Ireland to let our familes know we were all ok, hard to be believe it's been that long ago...those years in the late 80s & early 90s were a great time for metal. RIP to the young metal fans who passed that day.

I don't remember hearing anything about that concert at the time here in the US. The first time I ever saw a concert with a 'pit' was a Pantera show in Orlando in the mid 90s. I was about 5 feet from the stage in roughly the center and when they started playing, people just went nuts. I had no idea what was going on, but I got picked up and carried about 20 feet. McRocklin did put out one album with a band that Steve Vai helped him put together.

I don’t think anyone was slam dancing to Guns.Remember Axl told everyone to step back a couple of steps during their set.

Interesting to see you flick through this issue from the immediate aftermath of what is a well-known tragedy in British Rock & Metal circles.

Monsters of Rock always happened in August.... I tend to view Monsters of Rock and Download as two entirely separate things. They are not the same in my mind.

Love the Donington commentary. Nice statement from those f#%k heads, let’s cover our ass & word it so no one will ever know 😂 I bought Anthrax State Of Euphoria on release day & loved it ever since. Good one MM 🤘

Nice reminder of a copy I once had. I don't think that guy on the cover would have been that pleased given the headline. There's another channel here that goes into great detail about what happened and having been there, share their experiences of that day.

I was at Donington that year. Wasn't even aware people had died until I got home! I was in the beer tent when Guns n Roses came on as I thought they were shit! 😂

Pretty sure that Donington accident made our news over here and it just compounded my Dads opinion on me liking heavy metal even more. That as well as the Satanic panic ultimately led my dad to barging into my room one day and ripping most of my posters from my wall. Ahh good times back then 🤣

Hi Mike!!! i always like to see this old and classic 80's european magazines.... i think you're right Metal Hammer might be cooler than Kerrang. Back in the day i don't recall learning about this tragic event.... Slam dancin?? Lame statement too. cheers

Yeah ,Kerrang! was nowhere near as good as Metal Hammer in the 1980s but I still enjoy seeing those kind of videos.

The final figure I heard was there were 120,000 there. The entire slam dancing claim is bullshit. Nobody could move let alone slam or mosh. It's a total fucking lie.
