40 years since Seamus Darby scored that infamous goal in Croke Park to deny Kerry the 5 in a row. In later years I heard he often wished he never scored it. Many say there was a deliberate foul pushing Tommy Doyle in the back. I listened to Weeshie Fogarty on Radio Kerry one night many moons ago, God rest him, and he had the late great John Egan on and he asked John about that day... John Egan said, "It was a terrible tragedy that wonderful Kerry team didn't win the 5 in a row they so truly deserved, but it would have been an even greater tragedy if a beautiful Gaelic footballer of the class of Matt Connor of Offaly never got an All Ireland Medal." I had tears in my eyes as I listened and it still makes me emotional to think of it today. Poor Matt Connor had a terrible car accident shortly after on a Christmas day when he wasn't wearing a seat belt and was never able to play football or grace the hallowed turf again. But God has strange ways, and we don't always see them on the day. God rest Michael O'Heir who commentated and all of the players who have since passed away. I think I'll pull out Kerry's Golden Years tonight. Connor's display for Offaly in the 1980 All-Ireland Semi-Final against Kerry, scoring 2-09, was his signature performance and is considered one of the best personal performances in the history of Gaelic footbal

As an Offaly man I have to say that John Egan was man of the match that day. What an exceptionnel player he was. Unmarkable for a corner back.

Fair play to Kerry, must have been sickened after that goal but took their beating like true sportsmen that they were. Great game and delighted for us Offaly underdogs, shows we can mix it with the best of them every now and then.Uibh Fhaile Abu.

This was a great game of free-flowing football compared to The "modern" blanket possession dragging bullshit.

The Dubs are still miles behind Kerry in terms of the numbers of All-Irelands won.

That's the next challenge yeah, can see the gap being bridged over the next 2 decades though

@@eoin8274, I doubt it. Kerry will also be there competing in years to come. And the future of Kerry football is very bright. They have a wonderful and talented young team who will realise their full potential in the coming years. In this year's All-Ireland you had a Dublin team full of experience going against a Kerry team full of very young footballers many of whom were playing in their very first All-Ireland. Two great games of football ensued. The young Kerry players showcased wonderful football, but also a little bit of inexperience. In the first All-Ireland match between the two sides, if Kerry had tried to go out and score against Dublin instead of trying to contain Dublin then there is no doubt that Kerry would have beaten Dublin by two or three points. This Dublin team are of course great, but they are not invincible. They are beatable. If Kerry can assert their game plan and stick to it then it's there for the taking. Looking forward to some great clashes between Kerry and Dublin in the coming years. Having said that, Kerry has and always will be the home of Gaelic Football.

I thought the team in green was Offaly and that Kerry was wearing the away jersey, only at the end i understood that i was wrong. But most of all I saw almost exclusively points (over the bar) of the team in green and a goal and little else from the team in white: how did Offaly win? Maybe most of the white team points have not been included in the highlights?

I have seen that whole game. My own view was Kerry went ahead in the second half but they could never kill Offaly off. It seemed whenever Kerry scored a point Offaly would soon retaliate with a point of their own. Sheehy's penalty miss and Darby's late intervention were pivotal moments.

This must be the most famous gaelic football match of all time. The only game that might be more famous would be if Dublin did 5 in a row next year.

a g I am a Donegal supporter and one of my fondest memories is beating Dublin in the 1992 final. I have no vested interest in being a propagandist for Dublin. I feel Dublin have an ascendancy similar to the Kerry teams of the 1970s and 1980s. I accept your point that it doesn't matter what people say. What does matter is what happens on the pitch.

They probably will do 5 in a row but compared to these lads it's like the All Ireland pass the parcel.
