This reminds me of some stuff that Tim Ferriss talks about, about not trying to be a perfectionist and just focusing on being consistent instead. Instead of perfectionism, consistency is much more important. Perfectionism sometimes leads to giving up and not developing anything at all. Perfectionism can lead to the lowest results possible in the long run and to absolute Imperfection, which is kind of ironic. I think popular phrases can really get stuck in our unconscious minds and affect us, and one of them is "Quality over Quantity", but I don't think that's really a good influence. Another bad one is "All or nothing." That leads to not wanting to work on something unless it's going to be perfect quality, and that leads to perfectionism and stalling. To get good, someone has to expect that they will have to do a lot of imperfect work first and they have to just focus on practicing and doing a large quantity of work instead of expecting everything they do to be perfect quality. So I think maybe that phrase should be replaced with "Quantity leads to Quality".

I learnt that finishing something is more important than being perfect lately and now what Im also learning is Consistency over perfection. And I agree with you completely on what you say. Quantity over time beats quality and leads to even more consistent quality of work produced. But its hard for many(including me) to suck up in he short run to just make more instead of making better, but always finding the balance of what works for us personally is better. And also Ive adapted Tim's "2 shitty pages a day of writing" to my one shitty pages of drawing a day which has been really helpful for my practice.

Interesting about perfectionisim. Have you ever looked at a sketch that was maybe only half finished, and you compared it with one you spent hours perhaps "finishing" and the sketch looked a million times better? Maybe because the sketch was quick and loose? I've been thinking about drawing something everyday, but I haven't fully been able to tackle it. Perhaps daily sketches aren't so much about art in the immediate moment, but in the long run what it does to your creativity. You're investing in the idea that everytime you make a sketch, you will get better. You will have good ideas and bad ideas. But you'll have made so many eventually that you'll be able to pick out the best ones. It took a hundred bad ideas to get to that one good one. What if those hundred were never made? Every artist I have seen that draws everyday does indeed get better. Its a very beautiful process to watch.

I have had those a LOT. some of my favorite works comes from my dailysketch routines. and yeah those days where you have a breakthrough piece is rare but its worth it every single time. I used to focus all my efforts on dailysketch but the rewards of it are far of into the future that it requires immense patience to stick with it. So I just freed up my mind and put it in the back burner, started to focus on illustration pieces.

I think that popular phrases usually have a context that they apply to. "Quality over Quantity" works in the context of level design - where it's better to have fewer well designed levels than a lot of poorly thought out ones. I don't think that phrases should be replaced. They're rules of thumb that work in quite a few areas, but not all. I think it is up to us as individuals to make the correct judgment call for whatever scenarios we end up in.

I get it. That's why I don't do a full on Dailysketch these days. I just make sure I draw everyday. That way you dont get to a point where you burnt out having to deal with artist blocks.

love the video. I just have a suggestion, you should try to divide the plot into 3 part ( beginning , evolution , final/moral ) I found it to lack a little on the last one. Just a little (like 90 % perfect :) )

Om Ha I'm thinking the same thing. But I think I know. It's from experience and the many years and hours put into drawing from reference. When you see so many pictures and draw them, then you begin to create so,e in your mind.

Om Ha you're welcome! :D glad I could help. Sometimes when I think of things I just make answers in my head that make sense. It's probably not proven, or maybe it is, but what I'm trying to say is that's what I think.

Om Ha It's still okay to use references though, especially with anatomy, just as long as you're not copying anything But mostly, drawing without reference is basically memory of how anatomy works. How this eye looks and how far the lips would be from it, things like that Of course, it won't be perfect in the beginning. Actually, it'll be terrible But over time the experiences build up and you start remembering how you drew that arm in the last drawing, and you are able to incorporate it into a new drawing without reference So long story short: You'll start off terrible. Keep working at it, don't give up. Don't copy. You'll see improvement.

I LOVE this video! It really resonated with me. I know I need to practice to get better but I get discouraged when I think a sketch didn't come out well

Sarah Starkiller awesome! go sketching, even if it's bad. I did my daily sketch this morning and it turned out better than I expected it to. and so we're the last couple of days! I'm going from consistent bad sketches to consistent OK sketches. and soon to consistent good sketches :)
