The problem with the legend title is he never fought Roy Jones in his prime. He beat an old Roy Jones and an old Bernard Hopkins. He needed Roy Jones but Roy didn't need him to become a legend.

British fighters are generally very stiff and basic. Calzaghe was so fluid and varied, just totally unique for his environment. Which probably comes from being trained by a total outsider in his dad, who had his own ideas.

Easily defeated Roy Jnr who admittedly was past his best. As for Hopkins he might have been the best over 40 athlete in the history of boxing. Joe clearly won 8 rounds. Hopkins had to resort to feigning injuries as he as fit as he was couldn’t keep up with Joe. Don’t be applying for a job as a boxing journalist anytime soon.

Calzaghe is as close to Sugar Ray Robinson as l have ever seen. I do not know why the so called experts can't see the similarities. Both had tremendous power in each hand and could knock an opponent out while moving backwards. Both confused opponents by their unorthodox style but unfortunately what happened to Robinson has happened to Calgazhe there is no one left to fight in his weight class so he will go to 175 and fight in the light Heavyweight class. In my opinion Robinson and Calzaghe were the two best fighters and genuine nice people that lived.

Even with the slaps, Calzaghe was still far from a weak hitter, especially before he had brittle hands. One of the things Chris Eubank talked about was how hard Calzaghe really punched back then, and I certainly believe him. Joe put Chris on the canvas in the first round.

We had a guys like Michael Watson who was an even slicker version of Kessler, we also had Nigel Benn and Eubank in their primes. They fought and beat far better fighters than Calzaghe, they fought more frequently and had amassed just as many fights in their late 20's early 30's than Joe did in his late 30's. Although most wont argue that Cal was the most skilled out of Benn and Eubank, he was never really tested because he didn't push himself. He didn't attain his perfect record from fighting the best in their primes, he waited until guys were past it like Roy who had been KO'd twice before they fought but he claimed after their fight that he ended Roy's career.... Not many believe he would have beaten Hopkins in his prime Judging by their fight where hops was really competitive at the age of 42, which is the age Joe is right now.

To me it comes down to the US being a large place and most US boxing fans relating more to US fighters. Some great US fighters avoided certain opponents or rematches. Calzaghe is not alone in doing that. - The problem for Calzaghe with many US fans is that he is a foreign fighter and he didn't fight very often in the US. To build a large following in the US a foreign fighter has to have a lot of fights in the US. Otherwise a foreign fighter, no matter how good, is just not going to get that much respect from a lot of fans here. - This fight was a good example of that. Kessler is a top 10 all time super middleweight on many boxing website lists. Calzaghe beating him and being undefeated should make Calzaghe a very highly rated all time super middleweight. But that's not the way it works for a lot of US fans. Calzaghe is from Wales and he didn't fight most of the time in the US against US fighters. So, that's why so many US fans on KZfaq don't consider him to be very good. - I'm unusual. I'm a US boxing fan of many years who has seen lots of fights. And I consider Calzaghe to have been an excellent fighter. Another great foreign boxer who is not well known in the US is Carlos Monzon, a middleweight from Argentina. Imo a person doesn't have to be born in the US and fight a lot in the US to be considered great. Edit; mr t mentioned Michael Watson, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank. Eubank beat Watson and fought Benn to a draw. Calzaghe beat Eubank.

bb1111116 I hate the term lucky punch, but if Eubank fought Watson 10 times he'd lose 9 times. Eubank was in his prime when he fought Watson and he clearly lost their 1st fight and he was losing every round of their 2nd fight until he landed that punch. Lets not forget that Watson also went toe to toe with Benn and stopped him easily. Eubank came out of retirement when he fought Calzaghe, he was passed his prime and had already amassed more fights than Calzaghe's entire career in his late 20's. Gerald Mcclellan was also a far better fighter than Benn but he lost to him under extremely strange circumstances cause by a headbutt. That era of the super middleweight division was insane, unfortunately Calzaghe came slightly later, so he should have seeked out all the highly rated fighters in his time. Calzaghe said he would never fight in Germany against Sven Ottke who was rated equal to Calzaghe at that time. Bear in mind that Eubank fought in Germany against an undefeated champion and he experienced racism from the crowd throughout that fight but he still won. What was Calzaghe's excuse?

@mr t; Ottke fought Byron Mitchell winning by a split decision in Germany. And that same year Calzaghe knocked Mitchell out in the second round. So, Calzaghe fought someone who was at Ottke's level (Mitchell was an all time good fighter) and clearly beat him. - As for an Ottke fight, many famous fighters have ducked fights. I don't know the details about why Ottke and Calzaghe didn't fight. Maybe Calzaghe wanted to fight in a neutral country? He had a fight in Denmark in 2001 while Ottke never fought outside of Germany (except for one fight in Austria). - As for Eubank, talking about lucky punches and who is in their prime is besides the point. Eubank was still a title contender when he fought Calzaghe. Calzaghe beat Eubank and Kessler. And Ottke didn't fight those boxers. Ottke did defeat Brewer and Reid but so did Calzaghe. Using the top 10 all time super middleweight rankings from boxingscene.com, Calzaghe fought the better fighters.

This would have made him extremely famous early on in his career if he had beaten either one, but he didn't push himself.

Absolutely not. Roy Jones was better, James Toney was better, Nigel Benn was better, they never avoided anyone. They fought the best when the best were at their peaks.

His was forced to try to preserve the left hand. You can see it clearly in a few of his fights when he was knocked down, He would get fierce with the left for a round or two, killer fierce. Watch what happens to Byron Mitchell when he knocks Joe down early. Joe brings out his big gun and the fight gets stopped in the same round. Joe never lost his power but he was forced to use it only when he knew he had too. SMART, great fighter.
